after a certain number of years the "treatments" start to effect their brains

After last week I did think of this, but I don't think it would work. If the active was retired due to the treatments affecting her then how could they trust that there wouldn't be 'leaks' - like what you've described. If they were allready showing adverse affects from the treatments I don't think it would be safe.

I'm very interested to find out why it is Boyd took the job

Same here. Untill this week I was actually begining to think that they had given handlers treatment too... even just an underlying loyalty thing if not a full personality. But that doesnt really fit in with the uncaring iddiot they gave sierra. I can't wait to find out... I mean I get why he stayed after a few outings with Echo, but how did they find someone so morally sound that they knew they could trust. I really hope we get more back story.

it really does give some insight into why Adelle seems fond of the Dolls

So true... most of those that interract with the dolls dont seem to care. Perhaps it's in part because she's one of the few people that gets to meet the person they were before that was wiped. I love the instant connection that being a Handler would give her (though I'd assume the lead handler guy was one at some point too... ah well... no accounting for ass's).

I was thinking about the ex-doll idea... what if it wasn't that she was retired to being a doctor because it affected her, but because it didn't. In the first ep they told us that Echo would be working for 5 years then let go. How about after 5 years they put back the old personality (according to contract)... with a bit more and give them a job.

Most of the actives (who probably are affected by the treatment) would become the docile in house staff, who (though in the background) dont seem to be much more personable than Echo in her blank state. But if Claire coped better with the treatment than most they could give her a more complex task - in house doctor.

Hmm not sure that really makes sense... still working through the kinks
