Niki sighed softly staring up at the ceiling for a moment before deciding to move.
Carefully the blonde slipped out of bed, looking behind her once to make sure that D.L. was still asleep and made her way to the bedroom door, slipping out unnoticed.
Unable to help herself she crept to Micah’s partially open bedroom door and looked between the opening staring at his sleeping form before she made her way to the washroom in the front hall and closed the door.
Bracing her hands on the sink in front of her, she stared at her reflection … waiting.
The surface of the sink was cool and hard against her palms and after a few minutes Niki was forced to stand up fully once more. She felt strange just standing in front of the mirror looking at her reflection however, so she leaned her back against the washroom door and folded her arms across her chest before taking up her vigil once more.
The blonde felt her eyes beginning to droop as minutes passed by and nothing in the reflective surface changed. In fact she was so tired that she almost missed the fact that her reflection didn’t yawn when she did or tiredly lift its hand to cover her mouth as she did.
Almost.
“Jessica,” Niki said quietly moving towards the mirror once more bracing her hands on the sink. “I saw you,” Niki continued when her reflection aped her movements perfectly again.
“Is that what you were doing? Looking for me?” Jessica asked smirking a second later as Niki rubbed at her eyes trying to wake herself up fully.
“What else would I be doing in the washroom at three in the morning staring at myself?” Niki asked a few moments later feeling somewhat more alert.
“Well, when you were fourteen,” Jessica began smiling impishly before biting her lip suggestively while Niki glared at her and then blushed.
“Why were you looking for me?” Jessica asked once Niki had returned to her regular colour, the smirk that was usually in place on her face gone as she looked at Niki seriously. “Nothing’s wrong.”
“No,” Niki confirmed. It wasn’t a question; Jessica knew that they weren’t in any danger or that she wasn’t going through any type of crisis, which probably accounted for the other woman’s sober curiosity. Jessica didn’t like not knowing what was going on. “I just …” she paused for a second watching Jessica watch her, before she smiled a little and shook her head. “I guess I missed you. A little bit,” she added. “A miniscule amount,” she went on holding her thumb and index finger scant centimeters away from each other.
“Infinitesimally?” Jessica asked smiling a little.
“Very, very minutely,” Niki confirmed smiling back, relaxing as they just looked at each other for a few moments.
“The truth is,” Niki began pushing away from the sink once more to sit down on the lid of the toilet, “I was … I hadn’t seen you in so long, I was afraid you were gone,” she continued glancing over at Jessica before looking away again self-consciously. “We fought so much when I first realized you were there, but … I don’t know, in the end there we made a pretty good team,” she went on glancing up at Jessica again. “It’s kind of lonely up here without you, you know,” she finished tapping her temple.
“I thought that’s how you wanted it,” Jessica said softly. Niki had expected to hear some kind of accusation in her tone, but there was none, only a melancholy kind of resignation. “And I’m used to being alone,” Jessica continued staring out of the mirror, but not making eye contact with Niki.
Niki stood up at that and leaned over the sink once more staring at Jessica intensely.
“I wish I could touch you,” she sighed extending her hand, tracing Jessica’s cheek with her index finger. “For a moment in that room I thought that somehow you had found a way through into the world, and my heart … it didn’t just jump, it seized,” she continued drawing her finger away from the mirror. “I just wanted to hug you, and smell you, and … I don’t know,” she finished shaking her head at a loss for words.
Jessica held her gaze for a moment and then blinked a few times and angled her head to the side.
“You don’t have to be strong all the time,” Niki said knowing that Jessica was trying not to let her see her cry … or at the very least get misty eyed.
“Yes, I do,” Jessica responded swiping angrily at her eyes before clenching her jaw and turning back to face Niki fully. “That’s what I am … your strength. If I’m not strong, if I’m not taking care of you then I’m nothing … literally,” she continued the anger in her voice replaced with anxiousness. “You’ve grown so much in the past few weeks,” Jessica went on struggling to hold Niki’s gaze. “You won’t need me soon. Sometimes I swear I can already feel myself fading away.”
“No,” Niki said shaking her head again and again. “No,” she repeated. “You’re not going anywhere. I’m … your country. You’re a part of me,” she said emphatically.
“A part you’re not going to need soon,” Jessica responded looking away. She suddenly felt extremely weary, and went to sit on the toilet on her side of the mirror.
“I’ll always need you,” Niki said following Jessica with her eyes. “Maybe not in the same way I did before,” she acknowledged. She could feel a strength and fortitude in herself that wasn’t there five weeks ago and she knew that Jessica could feel it too. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t need you. I came down here in the middle of the night, looking for you, didn’t I? That means something, that’s got to count for something,” she insisted though she wasn’t sure if she was trying to convince Jessica or herself.
Jessica smiled at her. It was a little smile but it reached her eyes and it made Niki feel the tiniest bit better.
“I hope so,” Jessica murmured before pushing herself off of the toilet and moving back over to the mirror so that she was close to Niki again. “He’s going to keep beating you.”
Niki blinked. “What?”
“Micah,” Jessica said smirking again. “He’s going to keep beating you at that game and doing that dance if you don’t adjust your strategy.”
“Strategy?” Niki asked making a face. “It’s a video game.”
“Yes, one that requires strategy,” Jessica said speaking extremely slowly as if Niki were a small child or an animal.
Niki made a face at her and Jessica smiled again.
“Okay, whatever, strategy,” Niki said. “What’s this amazing strategy you had in mind?”
“Cheating,” Jessica responded looking quite satisfied with herself.
“I’m not sure that can technically be called a ‘strategy’,” Niki commented making air quotes around the last word. “Not to mention the fact that he’s twelve, and I’m his mother,” she continued shaking her head at Jessica, though she did it fondly.
Jessica arched an eyebrow at her and waited silently.
“Okay, how?” Niki asked her voice grudging though her eyes were keen and interested.
Jessica smirked and leaned forward her voice a low whisper.
“The first thing you need to do is …”

Niki glanced out the window as she made her way towards the back of the house, her movement languid and free.
The sun was just beginning to rise casting the street and the houses across it in a tangerine haze.
She could tell just from looking out that it was going to be a beautiful day.
