Painkiller Jane - 1x07 "Guess Ho's Coming to Dinner?"

Okay, that's not really the title of the episode, it's actually called "Higher Court", but I think mine is more appropriate because Jane is a big 'ol ho in the episode, and no, it's not with Maureen. If that was the case, I would have called it "Best Episode Ever".

First of all, there WAS subtext this episode ... between McBride and TheUglyOne. How, how, how does a show starring Kristanna Loken and someone with Maureen's haircut not have any les!yay? Like it's gotta be a deliberate attempt at this point, because you'd think that accidentally they would have some moments of chemistry, like the director cuts to Jane smiling and the editing makes it look like she's smiling at Mo or SOMETHING! Unbelievable.

Like this episode was the perfect opportunity for some hurt/comfort between Jane and Mo, but instead they had Mo be mindbogglingly bitchy and dismissive to Jane when she tried to help, and then they had the most emotionally stunted conversation ever while standing meters apart from each other. How, just how have these two been partnered for years? UGH!

Jane's like a Norwegian monkey-woman. Did you see how she climbed that fence? That was kind of awesome. Although, I have to say Jane's look of disgust when Mo was all like "I didn't mean for that to happen" after Jane got cut up by that laser because Mo was about to let that guy die, cracked me up. Lokinator gives good rolled eyes.

Everyone on this show is a moron. I know I've said it before, but I'm astounded by it every episode. How McBride couldn't find a man walking off the roof of a building while out for drinks with a hot chick who had just implied that they were going to get busy later on, is beyond me. And then Jane's brilliant plan to determine whether a neuro was at work, was to invite a red-shirt ex-boyfriend out to the same bar and see if he died too? *facepalm* The editing (and/or acting) for this also sucked because it kind of looked like Jane was excited about the fact that for a moment it looked like the guy was going to jump. I thought that it was building towards Jane's increasing douchey moral ambiguity, but no. Then Jane decides to take ex-boyfriend home because it was easier than explaining why she had asked him out. You're awesome Jane. *sigh* Also, not the 'boyfriend' we saw a few episodes again.

This show cannot do moral ambiguity. What they did to Maureen this episode was horrendous. I mean, they finally give her something to do, and it's to turn her into a crazy, rule breaking, vigilante because her 'boyfriend' died. *sigh* Honestly, after that stunt she pulled she has no business still being employed on a law enforcement team. I mean, none of them do really, but she was about to willfully let a man die, because he might have possibly done something bad in past, maybe, according to TheUglyOne.

Fucking be consistent with Jane's powers! UGH! When she gets hit by the lasers, they have time to walk her out of the building, drive her back to headquarters and get her treated by Mohinder and she still has scars on her back from it (lets be generous and say a half hour later). Then later in the episode, she shoots herself through the hand, a big 'ol hole straight through it, and that heals over in a matter of seconds. UGH! She either heals almost immediately, or she doesn't. You can't change the speed of the healing between episodes, and especially within the same episode!

TheUglyOne actually had the best character development of anyone. Seriously, I actually felt bad for Connor during the hallucination when he thought everyone was dead and was crying over their bodies before freaking out on the imaginary SWAT team. Though I have to say, his Angry Bear Screaming did amuse me. I was like "Awww, somebody's grumpy". It any case, I didn't hate him for once, and if they can keep the softer side of Connor going instead of the "let's chip them", random sexual harassment Connor, I might not loath the character.

Kristanna Loken is pretty. And thank god for that. Those boots they keep putting Jane in have got to go though, they are hideous and unflattering. I'm beginning to dread full body shots of Jane because I'm afraid of seeing the boots, and that's not right!

I wish they had explained that news report at the end a bit better. I mean, was it only plugged into that guy's house, or did they plaster a fake report about their deaths all over the television so that their family and friends (doubt they have any, unlikable bastards!) would become distraught thinking they were dead?

This episode also had some [sarcasm]great[/sarcasm] dialog.

Jane: Seeing is believing ... ISN'T IT?!?

Jane: Thought you were the only one who could play this game? Welcome to my nightmare!

Walter: What did you do?
Maureen: Changed your mind. (dramatic pause) About changing people's minds!

Walter: You know what type of people they are.
Jane: We do. The type of person you've become. GET HIM OUT OF HERE! *disgusted hand wave*

In fact, Jane's entire oddly delivered speech at the end. I love me some Lokinator but I have no idea what she was trying to do with her voice in that last scene. I did like the disgusted hand wave after the delivery of 'Get him out of here!' though, that was pretty funny, though I don't think it was supposed to be.

Also, was this the first episode that we haven't seen Jane solve her problems with a stiff drink or a glass of wine?

Um, the good ... the good ... ah ... did I already mention that Kristanna Loken is very pretty? Oh, oh, I know, that last shot of Jane looking out the car window and then slowly retracting her head until we just saw the black exterior of the car while she was voice-overing about dark secrets looked really cool. The shot of her through the window of the subway car as she was getting treated was also really nice. So, ah, yeah.

*cracks up*

I'm so glad I decided to stop watching.

You are so lucky you got out while you could!

I'm trapped now in the vicious cycle of pain and pretty.

Yay! I love your PK posts because it means I don't have to do one.

I just.. I just have no words for this episode. Okay, well, one - schizophrenic. It starts out with an interesting premise, gets interesting for the first segment, completely *derails* for the next two. The sequence with the guy hallucinating the car show seemed to go on for *forever*! And then gets saved by 'Connor shoots up everything' at the end.

If anything, I'd say this is a show with a female lead that seems *terrified* of having the women be the focus. This *should* have been a showcase for Maureen, a story to give us some background info on Jane and Mo's relationship but it all gets scuttled immediately (and turns Mo into a psycho) to give 'the boys' something to do. I thought for sure that this would be a 'Jane and Mo tell McBride to go fuck himself and find the bad guy together' episode. *sigh* That's what I get for thinking. As much as I liked the ending, the episode should have ended with Mo and Jane reconciling.. preferably naked!

Everyone on this show is a moron.

I literally laughed out loud at the scene where they show the team tailing a guy by.. staying in a tightly grouped pack right behind him. Like, way to be *subtle* guys!!

I think mine is more appropriate because Jane is a big 'ol ho in the episode

Yeah, that was just.. weird. I'm all for a sexually active heroine who's not staying chaste 'because of her job' but this ep? Just made Jane seem callous.

Oh, and who the Hell builds a club on a rooftop with NO railing!?! That's just asking to be sued!

Maureen: Changed your mind. (dramatic pause) About changing people's minds!

See, now I *know* Alaina is a good actress because she kept a straight face while saying that line!!

Word. I had hope that this episode was going to be good (you know for PKJ, not by regular standards) when it first started, but then it quickly started to slid downhill and made it all the way to the gutter by the end.

This *should* have been a showcase for Maureen, a story to give us some background info on Jane and Mo's relationship but it all gets scuttled immediately (and turns Mo into a psycho) to give 'the boys' something to do.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, when the episode started I thought "thank god, the Maureen episode" but then it just turned into the same old crap. It's like their idea of strong women means emotionally closed off, moody, and insensitive. Then again, ALL of the characterization on the show is cliche crap, but still when the show seems scared of/bewildered by its main character and the only other character from its comic origins it doesn't bode well. Like seriously, they already had a road map for Jane and Mo and they still have no idea what to do with them.

As much as I liked the ending, the episode should have ended with Mo and Jane reconciling.. preferably naked!

*sigh* I love the naked idea, but I would have been more than happy with the reconciling idea. Seriously, Mo showing up at Jane's door with a bottle of wine (which seems to be Jane's favoritest thing ever), saying sorry, and Jane saying she knows and them hugging, then Maureen going into Jane's apartment and the door closing behind them would have been perfect. It also would have been like four words, which means even these writers could have handled it.

Just made Jane seem callous.

Totally. They haven't made Jane seem like she's emotionally hesitant or damaged, they've just made her an asshole when it comes to meaningful relationship with others. It started in the second episode when she wouldn't call her father for apparently no reason, and has just continued but was super evident this episode.

Oh, and who the Hell builds a club on a rooftop with NO railing!?! That's just asking to be sued!

The thing that got me about that was that it was obviously cgi'd, so it would have been incredibly simple for them to just cgi some sort of fence in there and have him just tumble over that. It's little things like this that the makers of this show don't notice or care enough about to fix that bother me so much.

See, now I *know* Alaina is a good actress because she kept a straight face while saying that line!!

LOL. So true. Poor, Alaina, she's a trooper that one.

Didn't realize there was a new ep. Downloading now. Once again I'm amazed by how many people out there are doing the same. I think I've only seen Grey's get numbers like that.

Here's my new theory: SciFi probably figured they could easily sell the series in most European countries.
Nobody will even bitch about the quality because people are there to watch the Loken. The expectations are pretty low anyways after years of 'Walker, Texas Ranger' and 'Charmed' reruns.

lol, I know. When I see seeder numbers and download numbers in the thousands, I'm like "reeeeally?"

lol. It's funny cause it's probably true. They'll probably still be playing PKJ reruns in Europe like fifteen years from now.

Everyone on this show is a moron.

Moron may be too kind. The one in particular that had me shaking my head was their 'only bad guys end up in witness protection' assertion. How did these folks get guns and badges? Dumbasses. Someone ought to sic Alex Cabot on them.

How, how, how does a show starring Kristanna Loken and someone with Maureen's haircut not have any les!yay?

Hee! There was a little subtext going on between Jane and Mo though... it's just hard to see through all the bad. But then again, I get distracted when they're sharing the screen. I don't remember much except Jane pushing Maureen against a wall and covering her while Ugly was shooting up the batcave.

And I found it oddly amusing that Jane appeared to be digging bullets out of the wall with a knife during clean-up. Because, you know, they're already over-budget for secret base repair.

Oh PKJ... I want to love you, but you fight me every step of the way.

i have to say j...your mojo hasn't worked on me for this one...1) i really hate the voice overs...i'm so over voice overs right now...and i think it's pretty much a lazy story telling device, but that's neither here nor there...2) there is like zero cast chemistry...mind you, there's some between mo and jane and jane and the neighbor chick, but you can tell it's being held back...but on the whole, they just don't mesh well...3) it's worst than a poor man's "4400"...it's aiming for something that realm of government vs. super powered humans...but it's failing miserably...i don't know if it's because it's run out of order or if it's just plain bad plotting, but there's no real focal point beyond the "threat of the week" structure...i don't think there's an actual story arc going and if there is, it doesn't make any sense...i don't think even the hotness of the lokenator can save this train wreck...

ps

the short i was talking about earlier is called "the black boot"

pps

i don't know if you know this or not...but apparently one of the scenes in the "matrix" video game contains some persephone and niobi mackage...(dreamy sigh)...

i have to say j...your mojo hasn't worked on me for this one...

That's good, lol. I can't honestly say that I recommend this show. I'm watching it, but even I don't really like it. Stay away, stay away so you won't suffer as I do!

1) i really hate the voice overs...i'm so over voice overs right now..

I'm really sick of the voice-overs too. They're not important, they're not witty, and the writers are using them to be lazy. Jane tells us that Mo is always there for her, but we never see them act like friends. Whatever, writers, whatEVER.

2) there is like zero cast chemistry...mind you, there's some between mo and jane and jane and the neighbor chick, but you can tell it's being held back...but on the whole, they just don't mesh well...

This is the most chemistry-less cast I've seen in a long time. In fact most of the actors are just bland as hell. I really, really miss Amanda (neightbour chick) and wish that she would show up again, because as much as the plot of that episode sucked, that was the only episode where I felt like we really got to 'see' Jane, and Kristanna and Amanda!Actress actually had chemistry on screen together.

.i don't know if it's because it's run out of order or if it's just plain bad plotting, but there's no real focal point beyond the "threat of the week" structure...

Oh, so true. There's just nothing of substance to the show. They're so lazy/inept that they have the show set in the future and they haven't even explored what that world is like. It really feels like the show is being put together by random people picked off of the street. It's like just one rung above monkeys typing at word processors.

the short i was talking about earlier is called "the black boot"

Sweet. And where could I find this lovely film?

i don't know if you know this or not...but apparently one of the scenes in the "matrix" video game contains some persephone and niobi mackage...(dreamy sigh)...

Oh, I do know, and it is truly a beautiful thing. I found this clip as soon as humanly possible after I heard about all those years ago. It was a thing of beauty to my teenage eyes. Monica Bellucci is a goddess.

[identity profile] fembuck.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Moron may be too kind. The one in particular that had me shaking my head was their 'only bad guys end up in witness protection' assertion. How did these folks get guns and badges? Dumbasses. Someone ought to sic Alex Cabot on them.

I KNOW! I couldn't believe it when they said that. And Alex Cabot was who first popped into my mind as well. And then I thought about how Cabot would interact with this team, and I pictured her ripping them all a new asshole and looking fabulous while doing it, and I got a little misty eyed. Alex Cabot, Laura Roslin, that's how you write sexy, strong female characters. And you know, despite Jane's tough-girl exterior that if she had Jane hooked up, Cabot would totally be the top.

There was a little subtext going on between Jane and Mo though... it's just hard to see through all the bad. But then again

Yeah, I think I caught a little. But I was so disappointed with how things were going in general that it barely registered with me. Like when Jane was saying something about how Mo was in relationships or something, I was like "yeah, that's totally why you two broke up". But I mean, it's just grasping for straws that aren't there. Like when the sexist ex-con who's main purpose is to hit things is more emotionally available and open to comfort and support than the women, you know something is going horribly wrong with the show.

I don't remember much except Jane pushing Maureen against a wall and covering her while Ugly was shooting up the batcave.

lol, I don't even remember this. My attention wandered a bit this episode I will admit. Out of the last three, this was the one I was the least into. I'll have to go back and watch that though. Maybe it will make me feel better.

And I found it oddly amusing that Jane appeared to be digging bullets out of the wall with a knife during clean-up. Because, you know, they're already over-budget for secret base repair.

This amused me too. It was just so random to see her kneeling there in the lab coat digging out bullets. But I just shook my head and muttered, "oh, PKJ". Especially because she was totally in hearing range when Connor made some comment about "Jane's freakizoid healing" and there was no reaction for Jane. *sigh*

Oh PKJ... I want to love you, but you fight me every step of the way.

That sums up my relationship with the show so well. PKJ is like the girlfriend/boyfriend that you keep hoping will change, but never does.

What actually boggled my brain tonight was the show was on not one but THREE channels. Including the specialty channel Mystery. Mystery for god's sakes! I still didn't watch it by the way. I was too busy watching the Ducks lose. My poor Ducks.

Ooooh, thank you! I was just looking for this when you sent the link. You are teh awesome :D

That was actually a really cute short film, and totally furthers my Dania girl crush. She totally doesn't do those half-assed straight tight lipped kisses, that girl just goes for it, and I <3 that ;)

Now I just hope that Niki and Dania's character share some screen time together next season so that we can get some les!yay on Heroes
