Painkiller Jane - Okay, it's official this show hates me
So...I haven't watched 1x12 yet, but because I like to prepare myself for the horror that is to come I usually check TWoP for comments before viewing the episode so I know whether to lower my expectations or keep them at a middling level of expectation.
So there I was reading the comments, and apparently they killed Mo?
Can anyone confirm this? Cause if so I don't know if I'll bother with the episode or the show anymore. It's just the last straw. Okay, I'll probably watch the episode because I'm a glutton for punishment, but it's like the producers are trying to do everything in their power to make me loath this show.
I mean, Loken is now the sole female on the show. And yeah, she's a hell of a lot of woman, but common. I don't want to watch the boys club and Jane. I mean, the show can't be trying to avoid subtext that badly can they. Anyway, this really might be the last straw. I think it's a good thing that I'm gonna be away and won't be able to watch for a couple weeks.
Anyway, if anyone knows if that's true for sure, lemme know so I can prepare myself ... TO NEVER WATCH THIS SHOW AGAIN!
*sigh*
Why Lokinator? Why? [fierce whisper]I trusted you![/fw]

What is wrong with this show? Okay, that's rhetorical... because we all know its litany of wrongness. But I just don't get it. And until someone can tell me that last night's ep was all a dream and Jane wakes up to find Mo in the shower... then this show is dead to me now. Dead. Like Mo.
Of course, Jane is all crying and kissing dead!Mo's hand. It actually reminded me of "Loss" during that scene... only with about one-tenth the meaningfulness. (And I'm being generous there with my proportions.) Figures that the most subtexty stuff we get is when one of them dies. And then there's Jane's long eulogy at the funeral. Whatever, PKJ. First Amanda, which okay wasn't that big of deal, now Mo. Obviously there can be only one woman on this show. ANd any indication of subtext gets all the other women killed.
*sniff* I miss ya, Mo. In all your retro-80s glory. But at least now I don't to keep making excuses to continue watching this wreck of a show.

Sums up my feelings exactly. It's just so incompetent like everything else about this show. I mean, first for the majority of the episodes Jane and Mo have little to no interaction so there's no real emotional investment in their relationship, then they air the episodes out of order so that there can be no follow up/character development for Jane because of Mo's death. So basically, a main characters death becomes a plot point for ONE episode and will - likely - not be dealt with in a meaningful way in the future. Because really, I'm giving this show NO credit any more.
It actually reminded me of "Loss" during that scene... only with about one-tenth the meaningfulness. (And I'm being generous there with my proportions.)
I still haven't watched the episode yet, but I could totally see how it could be "loss"-lite. And honestly, when Law and Order does a better job building up relationships between characters based on minute long interactions that usually involve the word "warrant" that's saying something about the ability of your writing staff. The Alex/Olivia goodbye scene killed me in that because I CARED about Alex, and previous to "Loss" you had a good sense of their friendship. Jane and Mo I know will not effect me a fraction as much. *pets "Loss"*
But at least now I don't to keep making excuses to continue watching this wreck of a show.
I really hope that the producers enjoy their one season, because I think I'm done with this shit too, and a lot of people on the scifi board and others who don't even give a shit about subtext are pissed that they killed Mo too. I think only hardcore Lokinator fans are going to be left now.

So yeah, it's true. The sad thing is, this is probably the best episode of the season so far. But, like you, this show is now dead.to.me. The worst part of it all is Mo dies because a) once again, McBride is the shittiest leader ever, b) dies for the crap ship Jane/Connor and c) goes out like a punk ass bitch. They couldn't even give her a heroic death. I'll probably rant about it some more in my lj but who knew this crappy show could make me *this* pissed!?!
no subject
That's the thing with this show, it's always one step forward three steps back. It's just that most of what interested me in watching the show is gone. It's just not the show I thought it would be, and with Mo removed now, it's not a show that I really have any interest in watching other than for a weekly dose of Lokinator.
They couldn't even give her a heroic death.
Sigh. They had no idea what to do with the character, didn't give a shit about the character, and this just proves it. Their thinking was probably, "good, now we can move on to more interesting things like Connor's dark past, and McBride's army days". Well, fuck that, I have no interest in that or in watching Jane make moony eyes at Connor every five minutes. *wipes hands* Done!
no subject
Yep, and that's the rub. Mo was a computer specialist, and then they gave that role to Riley. Her role as confidant to McBride, and partner in the field to Connor. They didn't do anything with her character because they didn't *want* to. As someone on TWoP pointed out, Jane can do everything Connor does *and* not die which makes Connor useless. But boy I'll bet the PTB won't *ever* get rid of Connor, or McBride, or Riley (Joe and Seth are up in the air because they're minorites). They've taken a concept about a female character and her female partner and turned it into a 'boys club that *allowed* the girl in'. Fuck that!
I just hate shows that present female characters as their leads then toss them to the side so they can play with their male character favorites/proxies. I'm looking at *you* Atlantis!!
no subject
So I finally saw the episode, and like I thought the whole death was totally anti-climactic because Mo we never really got to know Mo because of the reasons you mentioned above. She really did go out with a whimper, just like she was barely seen or heard on the show. I thought Lokinator did a good job with the 'crying by Mo's corpse' scene, but at the same time I was like "you two barely interacted!" and the feeling of 'meh, going through the motions' only intensified with Jane's "I can't really say we were friends" part of her speech.
Just such a hack job of a death for a character they obviously didn't give a shit about.
But boy I'll bet the PTB won't *ever* get rid of Connor, or McBride, or Riley
And I'm so angered by that because it's totally true. McBride and Connor especially are such dead weight, but the writers flove Connor so much. Connor is totally becoming the Marcus Van Sciver of this show, the male substitute character for the writers to live out their fantasies on screen. He's totally a Gary Stu, and they will never lose their hard-on for him.
They've taken a concept about a female character and her female partner and turned it into a 'boys club that *allowed* the girl in'. Fuck that!
I second that 'fuck that'! The show is now completely different than the concept which got me watching it in the first place, and other than checking out Palmiotti's episode I'm done with this show. I tried for the Lokinator, but as exec. producer she's now part of the problem and I wash my hands of it.
I'm looking at *you* Atlantis!!
Female character on Atlantis ... hmmm, oh yeah there was this chick that was supposed to be like the leader right, short brown hair, apparently had lots of degrees and was internationally respected ... and ... oh yeah, Weir! I love it when she shows up on screen for like 5 seconds to tell someone do something obvious and then disappears again so that we can see Rodney be arrogant some more and John can make some more jokes.
no subject
Yep, exactly the reason I can't stand Atlantis.
Atlantis is an extreme case, but even pretty good shows that have just one woman in the main cast or that focus on the guys with the women having no real character development, I end up finding a little boring and having a hard time watching. I will often prefer a show that's not as good with chicks, preferably that kick ass, than a "good" show that's all about the boys.
Took sooo much railing and mockery from my friends for my repeated watching of 'Birds Of Prey' around the time they were all getting together religiously every week to watch 'The West Wing'. Which is a great show, but I still haven't seen most of it.
What can I say: Ashley Scott + Dinah Meyer = hot and that's all there is to it.
Alias is the best example of a show that is great, with a great female main character, but it didn't have enough other women for her to interact with. Leading to a puzzling lack of f/f fic until other women characters showed up. It took me a long time to get into the show because of this.
SG-1 is another interesting case of a show with a great female character that didn't work as well as it should have. Partially it was because of the lame-o writing from the same Atlantis crew, but what saved it for me is that I like Daniel and Teal'c (*pretty* and *cuddly*).

And with that you have officially killed any lingering interest I had in this show. I've already hit my quota for the Gary Stu's I'm willing to watch on a regular basis. And I have no interest in watching another female lead get eclipsed by her male co-stars.. again.
I tried for the Lokinator, but as exec. producer she's now part of the problem and I wash my hands of it.
On a serious note, I do wonder what exactly Loken's role as Exec. Producer is? Like, I haven't read too many interviews but what exactly in her background, aside from acting, makes her qualified to EP, ya know.
no subject
So true. I just don't understand why it's so difficult for people to write female characters. *hugs Battlestar Galactica*

That's just the thing. Nothing as far as I can tell. Well, that's not true she was also an executive producer on an independent movie she made called "Lime Salted Love", but that hasn't seen the light of day yet so I can't use it as evidence or ability or inability to guide a production.
Basically, if anything I think this show might be what she's training herself with. I think she basically saw an opportunity (they wanted her because she was a name actress known to sci-fi fans, which gave her some room to negotiate) and grasped it, which might be good for her later on, but sucks for the show.
I think maybe if she weren't filling the Exec. Prod. role then they might have hired someone with experience who could have maybe avoided some of these pitfalls, but with Loken you've got someone (hopefully) learning pitfalls to avoid which means me watching a lot of crap for 12 episodes.

Back to our rant in progress: OMGWTFBBQ! What is going on with this show? Isn't this exactly the kind of things Kristana was supposed to stop from happening by being a producer? Alaina Huffman must have gotten another job and wanted to leave the wreck before it drags her career down - you go Alaina! - that's the only explanation I can find for this.
*Goes back to watch Taryn's video for something more pleasant to think about*

That's definitely the better choice! I heart Army Wives, and it's got tons more subtext (seriously, Claudia Joy has the biggest girl!crush ever on Denise) and the relationships between the wives are being beautifully developed (ex. the emerging closeness between Pamela and Roxie). I love pretty much everything about this show, and hated pretty much everything about PKJ, so its almost a relief not to have to watch anymore. I gave it a shot, I gave it a good shot and that's it.

I certainly hope that's the case. Or that she at least finds work soon on one of the good shows produced in Vancouver or which there are plenty. I will laugh with pleasure for her if she shows up on BSG or Eureka or something. Maybe she'll do some theatre and try to forget about the horrible dialogue she was forced to spew out on this show. I mean, yeah the loss of a steady pay check has to suck, but not being on PKJ can only have a positive affect on her career.

..and if I was writing it, I would have built that up more if I knew she was going to get killed...or at the very least have a major revenge scene after...I mean MAJOR!
Because he's right. If you're going to kill off a main character at least a) have the episode be something about said character and b) have the hero go fricken *nuts*! Having Jane put a bullet in Betty's head was a great start, but it still felt half-assed.
The sad part is, Palmiotti admits he wrote the next episode and there's nary a mention of Maureen in it because, well, he had no idea she was going to die when he wrote it. Which *really* sucks.

I did like how JP managed to take no responsiblity, plug his comics, and be a team player all at the same time. At least he would have built up the Jane/Mo relationship. Guess I'll be sticking to the comics from now on.
This is the sort of thing that always makes me wish I had the money and the resources to create my own programming.

You know what it reminded me of - Xena's 'The Deliver'. You know, how the episode started out as a Boadicea vs. Ceasar with Xena kicking ass. The next thing you know, Gabrielle's getting raped by ribbons of fire and I'm all WTF? Dude, last minute changes because the Exec. Producer got a wild hair up is ass *always* leads to badness.
I did like how JP managed to take no responsiblity, plug his comics, and be a team player all at the same time.
I actually admire him for that. It was like reading talking points for fandom!
This is the sort of thing that always makes me wish I had the money and the resources to create my own programming.
*sigh* I know. There's only so much L Word and/or subtexty shows one can watch before you crave something with a little more substance.
no subject
It really was impressive.
You know what it reminded me of - Xena's 'The Deliver'.
I hadn't thought of that, but so true. I was reminded of Xena as well... in how much better it was in killing off the main character's girlfriend. I'm talking "Sacrifice, part 2"... Gabrielle saving Xena by leaping to her 'death' with Hope, screaming each other's names, Xena turning around and killing Callisto. Now that was a good death. Even if we all knew it was temporary. Mo's death was, just as you've said, lame. Random. Sucktastic.
There's only so much L Word and/or subtexty shows one can watch before you crave something with a little more substance.
All I want is the hot sex and the happy ending... with a side of substance. Is that so much to ask for? All my hopes now rest with your PKJ zombie fic. No pressure though. *g*

I feel you so much on that. I'm tired of scraps and suffering through shows I hate for some GOGA. I don't care if it's an unpopular opinion, I find TLW absolutely impossible to sit through. That show just makes me squirm with its awfulness. It's so uncomfortable, almost everyone is unlikeable, and I haven't really LIKED any couple on the show (okay, I liked Dana and Lara in the first season but ... *thinks* yeah, that's pretty much it).
I just want a show that I actually enjoy, with an actual lesbian relationship, and character development. Why is this so impossible?
no subject
Oh I hope that's not an unpopular opinion because I'm right there with you. I bailed midway through season three. Only watched season 4 because of KL and have no plans to be back for season 5 now that Loken's gone. I don't want to use the word 'resent' because no one's making me watch it but that's how I feel. I resent that I watch the show because there's no other alternative. And the PTB patting themselves on the back for such 'edgy' and 'real' program knowing full well we're a 'captive audience' who would change the channel in a heartbeat if there were an actual alternative.
no subject
Thank god there are some people who are willing to admit the show is crap. TWoP boards sometime confuse me into thinking that the majority of people actually like this show.
Only watched season 4 because of KL and have no plans to be back for season 5 now that Loken's gone.
Yeah, same here. And halfway through the season I gave up on watching the actual episodes and just watched the clips that featured KL because I couldn't take squirming through an entire episode for like 5 minutes of Lokinator action.
I don't want to use the word 'resent' because no one's making me watch it but that's how I feel. I resent that I watch the show because there's no other alternative.
I totally get that. I feel the same way about it. I'm watching it because it's all that there is, but I don't really like it and I'm pissed that I have to sit through something so dreadful just to have anything at all.
And the PTB patting themselves on the back for such 'edgy' and 'real' program knowing full well we're a 'captive audience' who would change the channel in a heartbeat if there were an actual alternative.
The arrogance of the creator is one thing that really pisses me off about TLW. Chaiken thinks she's a friggin genius and that her show is the highest quality of art, when really it's badly plotted, badly written, coocoo bananas, bullshit, populated by a lot of weird and unlikeable characters, where no one is allowed to be happy EVER.
*sigh*

cuddle withenjoy. *sniff*I can't go on with this show. Rocks fall, everyone dies.
no subject
Yeah, at least the show isn't all there is for PKJ fans. When there's another medium with which to enjoy the characters it makes the crappiness of the show somewhat easier to deal with.
I can't go on with this show. Rocks fall, everyone dies.
LOL! 'Rock fall, everyone dies.' Best piece of writing on the show yet. Honestly, I'm at the point now where I just want the cancellation notice to come through so that I can make a clean break from it all.
no subject
That was a very diplomatic way of saying he thinks the shows creators are hacks who made a big mistake. And I totally agree with what he said about how the relationship should have been built up if they were going to do this.
But, the fact that they didn't tell me that Maureen was going to die before hand forcing him into rewrites just shows what a last minute decision it was and furthers my opinion that TPTB have absolutely no idea what they are doing.
And that he mentions that their will be a lack of follow-up next episode just shows how little respect the show had for this characters, and really for the viewers of the show.
I'll watch the Palmiotti episode because I'm curious, but after that *waves goodbye*

They really are doing everything they can to make a show with KL suck. This pretty much settles it for me, I'll get the eps but the hell I'll be watching them unless someone tells me something amazingly great happened. *bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep* killers, I hate you!!!
Sorry about that, just needed to get it out. Thanks for the info.
no subject
Yep, it's like it takes WORK to make a show suck this bad. They had a built in audience of KL fans, but the show is just so bad. Awesome as KL is she alone is not enough for me to dedicate 40 minutes of my life to every week. Really crappy KL movies = 2 hrs of my life maybe twice a year, but this show is just too much crap too often.
Also, I'm kind of mad a KL for allowing the show to suck this much. It's like if she thinks that this shit is good then *crush flickering like a candle in the wind*
but the hell I'll be watching them unless someone tells me something amazingly great happened. *bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep* killers, I hate you!!!
Pretty much my reaction. I'll keep checking the message boards and if I read something promising might check out that episode, but as of now the is ashes and dust to me.
no subject
Yeah, it's really sad to think that she's either completely oblivious to the suckiness of the show or she knows... *sigh*
no subject
Yeah, choosing between whether its incompetence or indifference isn't really all that great. I mean, KL doesn't have a hell of a lot of experience in this area, and I think she's probably learning a LOT about what to do and what not to do as the production goes on, and that'll be great for her, but its probably not the best thing for the quality of the production.
P.S. Who is that in your icon and where is it from? I have never seen this dashing cowgirl before, and I love dashing cowgirls!
no subject
But she's actually a musketeer. That's Karen Cliche in a series called Young Blades. She played a woman pretending to be a man so she could join the musketeers. Silly show but the source of my huge crush on Karen :-D
no subject
Ah, yes I remember that show. I caught a few episodes of it and remember her being quite dashing. In fact she was the sole reason I watched any episode, and if the station that played it here hadn't been total tools and had given it a regular time slot I would have watched a lot more.
Anyway, kickass icon *pets the pretty*
no subject
I am never watching this show again! And I want the 12 hours of my life back that I wasted on it. I'll just watch old L Word eps if I wanna see Loken.
no subject
lol, this is exactly how I feel. Only I'll replace "old L Word eps" with "clips of old L word eps" because I can't stand that show and couldn't bare to sit through an entire episode just to see KL again. T3 and Dark Kingdom I could stand to rewatch though.
*sigh* Let's hope she gets some film work during hiatus that we can look forward to since PKJ is no longer an option, and I need new!Loken as well as old!Loken*
*goes off to finish watching Mortal Kombat Conquest*
hello, jimmy palmiotti here...
To answer a few things, the maureen character, alaina, had to leave the show because of some contract stuff which I dont really know about. as stated, I would have had her just leave the country, sent on another mission or have had her have an affair with jane, see that because of it , well...she would have a problem with working with jane , and move on.
Killing her was something you all know I wasnt happy with because of the comic.
That said, please give my episode THE LEAGUE airing this friday a shot. It's the first tv screenplay I ever wrote...and although its was watered down a bit from what I gave in, I still think it has its moments.
ALSO, to defend Kristanna a bit...she is on a learning curve with the show and is overwhelmed daily with all the stuff being thrown at her. She and the show get better as the season goes on.
Also, you all might enjoy the new series of comicbook. I will go as far to say I am willing to send the first issue to anyone that will give it a try, on me...but promises to buy the next one if they enjoy it. if not, line the bottom of a bird cage or a litter box with it...lol.
my e mail is palmio@aol.com if interested in trying the comic. e mail me somewhere to send it...and I will. I stand behind my madness.
so a hello to you all and please keep digging in on the show...dont worry about me reading the posts, really...its all good in my eyes. honesty is a turn on.
JIMMY PALMIOTTI
ps: post on the sci fi boards if you get a chance. they actually read each and every post every day...no kidding.
Re: hello, jimmy palmiotti here...
We can be a little ... uh, passionate with our opinions but it's just because we actually care ;)
I would have had her just leave the country, sent on another mission or have had her have an affair with jane, see that because of it , well...she would have a problem with working with jane , and move on.
I love both of those ideas so much more. In fact I think I'm just going to pretend that the last one actually happened :D
Thanks for the scoop on why Alaina left though, it makes me feel somewhat better that the loss of Mo had to happen because of RL issues instead of just being a badly plotted creative decision.
I'd have preferred your options *grin* but I feel a smidge better.
That said, please give my episode THE LEAGUE airing this friday a shot. It's the first tv screenplay I ever wrote...and although its was watered down a bit from what I gave in, I still think it has its moments.
I'm definitely going to watch your episode, and I know that I a lot of my LJ friends here are planning on viewing it too. As upsetting as Mo's death was, the opportunity to watch an episode by the Original Cool is too much to pass up :D Here in Canada we're about a week behind in episodes, but I'll definitely be watching!
ALSO, to defend Kristanna a bit...she is on a learning curve with the show and is overwhelmed daily with all the stuff being thrown at her. She and the show get better as the season goes on.
I figured that she was on a learning curve with this one, and can imagine how overwhelming the whole thing must be. I'm a huge Kristanna fan, I love her, but as a fangirl I can occasionally go a little crazy, lol. I've noticed that the quality of the last few episodes have been an improvement over the beginning of the year, so its definitely been noticeable as people get their sea legs. Honestly, you have to care to be this harsh, lol ;)
Also, you all might enjoy the new series of comicbook. I will go as far to say I am willing to send the first issue to anyone that will give it a try, on me...but promises to buy the next one if they enjoy it. if not, line the bottom of a bird cage or a litter box with it...lol.
*is atwitter with excitement*
I would totally love to see the new series of the comic book. And comic stores are totally my friend so I totally promise *girl guides honor ... that's the Canadian girl scouts* to buy the next one since I'm sure that I'll enjoy it. In any case there will be no bird cage lining because birds terrify me ;D
I'm going away on vacation for a couple of weeks, but I will definitely use that email address when I get back!
ps: post on the sci fi boards if you get a chance. they actually read each and every post every day...no kidding.
Thanks for the info, its nice to know that the PTB are actually interested in what the fans are saying. I'll check it out (with less cap locks, exclamation points and hysterics of course, lol)
I have to say, as terribly embarrassed as I am by the rest of the contents of this page of my LJ *blush*, it's been an honor to have you stop by my little den of insanity. It is seriously, very, very cool and really greatly appreciated :D
*salutes*
I look forward to watching your episode!
