Painkiller Jane - Okay, it's official this show hates me
So...I haven't watched 1x12 yet, but because I like to prepare myself for the horror that is to come I usually check TWoP for comments before viewing the episode so I know whether to lower my expectations or keep them at a middling level of expectation.
So there I was reading the comments, and apparently they killed Mo?
Can anyone confirm this? Cause if so I don't know if I'll bother with the episode or the show anymore. It's just the last straw. Okay, I'll probably watch the episode because I'm a glutton for punishment, but it's like the producers are trying to do everything in their power to make me loath this show.
I mean, Loken is now the sole female on the show. And yeah, she's a hell of a lot of woman, but common. I don't want to watch the boys club and Jane. I mean, the show can't be trying to avoid subtext that badly can they. Anyway, this really might be the last straw. I think it's a good thing that I'm gonna be away and won't be able to watch for a couple weeks.
Anyway, if anyone knows if that's true for sure, lemme know so I can prepare myself ... TO NEVER WATCH THIS SHOW AGAIN!
*sigh*
Why Lokinator? Why? [fierce whisper]I trusted you![/fw]

So yeah, it's true. The sad thing is, this is probably the best episode of the season so far. But, like you, this show is now dead.to.me. The worst part of it all is Mo dies because a) once again, McBride is the shittiest leader ever, b) dies for the crap ship Jane/Connor and c) goes out like a punk ass bitch. They couldn't even give her a heroic death. I'll probably rant about it some more in my lj but who knew this crappy show could make me *this* pissed!?!

That's the thing with this show, it's always one step forward three steps back. It's just that most of what interested me in watching the show is gone. It's just not the show I thought it would be, and with Mo removed now, it's not a show that I really have any interest in watching other than for a weekly dose of Lokinator.
They couldn't even give her a heroic death.
Sigh. They had no idea what to do with the character, didn't give a shit about the character, and this just proves it. Their thinking was probably, "good, now we can move on to more interesting things like Connor's dark past, and McBride's army days". Well, fuck that, I have no interest in that or in watching Jane make moony eyes at Connor every five minutes. *wipes hands* Done!

Yep, and that's the rub. Mo was a computer specialist, and then they gave that role to Riley. Her role as confidant to McBride, and partner in the field to Connor. They didn't do anything with her character because they didn't *want* to. As someone on TWoP pointed out, Jane can do everything Connor does *and* not die which makes Connor useless. But boy I'll bet the PTB won't *ever* get rid of Connor, or McBride, or Riley (Joe and Seth are up in the air because they're minorites). They've taken a concept about a female character and her female partner and turned it into a 'boys club that *allowed* the girl in'. Fuck that!
I just hate shows that present female characters as their leads then toss them to the side so they can play with their male character favorites/proxies. I'm looking at *you* Atlantis!!

So I finally saw the episode, and like I thought the whole death was totally anti-climactic because Mo we never really got to know Mo because of the reasons you mentioned above. She really did go out with a whimper, just like she was barely seen or heard on the show. I thought Lokinator did a good job with the 'crying by Mo's corpse' scene, but at the same time I was like "you two barely interacted!" and the feeling of 'meh, going through the motions' only intensified with Jane's "I can't really say we were friends" part of her speech.
Just such a hack job of a death for a character they obviously didn't give a shit about.

And I'm so angered by that because it's totally true. McBride and Connor especially are such dead weight, but the writers flove Connor so much. Connor is totally becoming the Marcus Van Sciver of this show, the male substitute character for the writers to live out their fantasies on screen. He's totally a Gary Stu, and they will never lose their hard-on for him.
They've taken a concept about a female character and her female partner and turned it into a 'boys club that *allowed* the girl in'. Fuck that!
I second that 'fuck that'! The show is now completely different than the concept which got me watching it in the first place, and other than checking out Palmiotti's episode I'm done with this show. I tried for the Lokinator, but as exec. producer she's now part of the problem and I wash my hands of it.
I'm looking at *you* Atlantis!!
Female character on Atlantis ... hmmm, oh yeah there was this chick that was supposed to be like the leader right, short brown hair, apparently had lots of degrees and was internationally respected ... and ... oh yeah, Weir! I love it when she shows up on screen for like 5 seconds to tell someone do something obvious and then disappears again so that we can see Rodney be arrogant some more and John can make some more jokes.

Yep, exactly the reason I can't stand Atlantis.
Atlantis is an extreme case, but even pretty good shows that have just one woman in the main cast or that focus on the guys with the women having no real character development, I end up finding a little boring and having a hard time watching. I will often prefer a show that's not as good with chicks, preferably that kick ass, than a "good" show that's all about the boys.
Took sooo much railing and mockery from my friends for my repeated watching of 'Birds Of Prey' around the time they were all getting together religiously every week to watch 'The West Wing'. Which is a great show, but I still haven't seen most of it.
What can I say: Ashley Scott + Dinah Meyer = hot and that's all there is to it.
Alias is the best example of a show that is great, with a great female main character, but it didn't have enough other women for her to interact with. Leading to a puzzling lack of f/f fic until other women characters showed up. It took me a long time to get into the show because of this.
SG-1 is another interesting case of a show with a great female character that didn't work as well as it should have. Partially it was because of the lame-o writing from the same Atlantis crew, but what saved it for me is that I like Daniel and Teal'c (*pretty* and *cuddly*).

And with that you have officially killed any lingering interest I had in this show. I've already hit my quota for the Gary Stu's I'm willing to watch on a regular basis. And I have no interest in watching another female lead get eclipsed by her male co-stars.. again.
I tried for the Lokinator, but as exec. producer she's now part of the problem and I wash my hands of it.
On a serious note, I do wonder what exactly Loken's role as Exec. Producer is? Like, I haven't read too many interviews but what exactly in her background, aside from acting, makes her qualified to EP, ya know.

So true. I just don't understand why it's so difficult for people to write female characters. *hugs Battlestar Galactica*

That's just the thing. Nothing as far as I can tell. Well, that's not true she was also an executive producer on an independent movie she made called "Lime Salted Love", but that hasn't seen the light of day yet so I can't use it as evidence or ability or inability to guide a production.
Basically, if anything I think this show might be what she's training herself with. I think she basically saw an opportunity (they wanted her because she was a name actress known to sci-fi fans, which gave her some room to negotiate) and grasped it, which might be good for her later on, but sucks for the show.
I think maybe if she weren't filling the Exec. Prod. role then they might have hired someone with experience who could have maybe avoided some of these pitfalls, but with Loken you've got someone (hopefully) learning pitfalls to avoid which means me watching a lot of crap for 12 episodes.
