I can't help but feel like the 5 year contract thing was just a lie

yeah but why do they bother to get them to sign? It has to be so that if they are discovered it's all above board... so they have all this documentation saying they were ALLOWED, even asked to do these things to the actives. They'd get rid of any tangible evidence of any illegal activity and just have proof that, though twisted in oh so many ways, what they were doing wasn't forced... I was trying to get to not illegal but I'm sure there's rules about human testing of drugs/procedures that eliminates that. Oh well... might perhaps limit their culpability.

They could keep imprinting them forever

Even without the theory of mental degradation, they wouldn't be able to keep actives too long. Their engagements are generally either physically difficult... or ones for which young beautiful people are needed. The 5 years sounded to me about as long as they would really be able to use someone... before constant injuries or the onset of wrinkles made them retire. I mean... why would you keep using someone who'd was beginning to loose that youthful vigor if you can get a new one?

without their original personalities being in tact

I think this is just me... though they do seem to be using the same path in the show to some degree. But I like to think that the easiest personality for a mind to maintain would be it's own. It has all those paths of least resistance for thoughts which were built up throughout their lives before they were wiped. I think it's that which gives the wiped dolls their limited personality. They dont have any memories which would give them emotions to connect to things and events, but as well as their basic programming they have the base shape of their thoughts.

So that's mainly why I think they'd give them back their own personality. It makes it stick easier. They tweak it a bit, giving them double layering to add in loyalty to the house and putting in the skills needed to do whatever job is required. I guess partly this may be based in the fact that I can't shake that initial thought I had that Claire used to be a Doll... but I love the character too much to want her to be a construct. To balance this you have to give some reason for them to give back, at least to some degree, who she used to be.

The other thing that I think is in favor of this idea is that the engagements are always so short. I mean the longest seems to have taken a 3-4 days so far. I know this is in part due to the nature of the show. But with that technology if you could permanently imprint someone with another personality why arent they producing perfect wives instead of the perfect weekend fling?

The personality must start to degrade after a period of time, probably (according to my matter over mind idea) down to a mix of the base blank state and those parts of the imprinted personality which match whatever the doll used to be like. Therefore if they want to leave permanent imprints on the dolls after they're no longer of use... it would be based upon who they used to be.

In fact thinking on those lines the imprinting of the Handlers could still work. They give them loyalty to the house... but that wouldnt necessarily always translate into what we see in boyd. The difference he showed was partially work ethic and partially real caring for the doll, which if they only added loyalty to the company wouldn't necessarily be there. It's how the handler's own personality interprets what extra he had been given.

Boyd would obviously be dedicated and precise in any job he took, and is a caring person and so it comes out like that. Sierras handler had no work ethic and little capacity for caring, so his imprint might only come out in an inability to betray the dollhouse to outsiders. Hmm... might work.
