Speaking as someone who's a non Trekker (Next Generations was the only series I liked), but I was amazed by this film.
The cast was amazing. Not a single character I would've taken out. I don't know if Bruce Greenwood's Cpt Pike was in the original series or not, but it was good seeing a character I wasn't familiar with and liking him. By the time Leonard Nemoy appeared, I was applauding. And again this was coming from a non Trekkie. The film really built up to that moment very well. It was also refreshing to see that Nemoy was actually relevant to the plot instead of being an unnecessary cameo. Love his narrative voice too. Also don't be afraid to say you don't like Simon Pegg, because this was the first role where I thought he was actually funny. Needless to say I didn't like Hot Fuzz and absolutely hated Shaun of the Dead.
The story was very well thought out and loved how it payed respects to the original series. It was both a sequel and reboot at the same time.
The effects were amazing. It gave me that Starship Troopers feel where I actually wanted to join Starfleet. I was surprise the overall film only cost 140 mil considering how much films are more costly yet don't look half as good like Spiderman with it's 258 mil budget.
I also checked out IMdb and think I have answers to the questions concerning the Romulans. It says that they're a proud warrior race (so I guess they're white Klingons?) and this might explain somethings.
That would explain why the mining vessel had weapons due to the Romulans loving their weapons. It might also explain why they didn't launch a planet wide evacuation. See the first Superman film for an excellent example of a race that knew fully well their planet was in danger, but chose to stay and be morons due to pride.
I could even give a reasonable explanation why Neron drops the red matter in the planet's core rather than the surface. Remember both him and Spock time traveled when they went through that black hole. So if he dropped it on the surface there was the possibility the planet might have actually went through the black hole and survived. Neron clearly didn't want that, so he drops it in the center so the black hole can destroy the planet piece by piece.
Now I think it's only fair to nitpick some things.
First Anton Yelchin's accent bugged me. Again I'm not a Trekki so I'm not sure if that's how Checkov suppose to sound like, but it bothered me the same way Anton said "come with me if you want to live" in Terminator Salvation bothered me.
Second where the heck were the other starships when Neron attacking Earth? You think hearing someone is planning to destroy your planet would grab some attention.
Third I kind of agree with the people saying Kirk being made first officer felt kind of rushed. But just a bit because I think Pike making Kirk first officer was plausible enough.
Really that's it. Overall it gave me a science fiction feel that I hadn't felt in a long time.
