Bella is a plain jane who has just moved to Forks to live with her dad because her mom got married and Bella didn't want to cramp her style.
When she gets to Forks, she meets the Cullens (Edward the brooding virgin, Emmett the jock, Rosalie the bitch, Jasper the Tortured One, Alice the lovable pixie with a heart of gold, Esme the mom, and Carlisle the Doctor Dad)
Bella thinks Edward hates her at first, but really he loves her and is scared his vampire nature will make him hurt her. Bella doesn't give a crap about all of that, and after Edward saves her from danger they start to date, not have sex and be boring.
Bad vampires show up, and want to taste Bella's delicious blood. Edward and the Cullen's rush off to save her. James the bad vampire is killed, Victoria his girlfriend is pissed and wants revenge, and Bella and Edward are maddeningly still a couple.
Oh, and there's a kid named Jacob who is an old friend of Bella's who also has a crush on Bella. He hates Edward, because his people know that the Cullen's are vampires. He's set up as another possible love interest for Bella, and he's the better choice really but from the beginning it's clear that Bella won't choose him.
Oh, and Edward can read minds, Jasper can feel and manipulate people's emotions, and Alice can see the future (sometimes ... depending on plot convenience)
Now you don't have to read Twilight and have all of the information you need to understand New Moon!
