“She’s taken everything.”

Caprica lips twisted up in a sympathetic smile as she blinked against the tear’s forming in her eyes. “I know.”

Boomer turned to look at her. She had once spent a lot of time with Caprica and had learned to read the woman almost as easily as everyone read her.

“You do,” she said softly.

“Three and Gaius … they,” Caprica replied her face dropping down. “Left me.”

“You feel superfluous,” Boomer said a few seconds later. She understood that. She had just come back from seeing her life lived better by another version of herself.

“I gave up everything,” Caprica murmured, her other Sixes, Boomer, her love, her ideals, and on many occasions her self respect.

“We had so much hope,” Boomer commented looking over at Caprica. “Now I wish we had never left.”

“It was bright there,” Caprica replied, memories of Boomer’s hand mapping her body coming into her head, Boomer’s smile as she sat astride her, her hair and skin glowing in the light of the morning sun streaming through the large windows of Boomer’s apartment. She had rarely projected on Caprica, now she couldn’t remember the last time she had actually been where she was.

“I was lonely before you came,” Boomer responded remembering living alone in her old apartment after being reborn. Day after day with nothing but her fake memories, surrounded by fake pictures, depicting the life of a person who had never really lived. Repeating the torturous cycle of living the live of Sharon Valeri, because though she knew that she was a construction, the construction was all that she knew. “When you touched me, it was the first time I felt real since re-awakening.”

“We were … free,” Caprica sighed sucking in a deep breath as her eyes fluttered. The first time Boomer gasped in delight as she ran her fingers along her heated spine springing into her mind. Memories of how they lay together, wrapped in each others naked embrace as they spoke of their hopes or their dreams for the future and smiled intertwined. Whispers of optimism instead of deceit, plans for reconciliation instead of destruction, ideas and feeling exchanged and understood instead of separate monologues and ideas occasionally intersecting.

Caprica reached out, the backs of her fingers brushing against Boomer’s cheek before her hand moved down to cup Boomer’s jaw.

“I left you alone,” Caprica said understanding for the first time what that really meant. The other Sixes didn’t understand her; the experiences of her previous life had changed her. She had outgrown them. But it didn’t matter, because first she had Boomer, then she had Gaius, and then she had Three as well. The Eights were just as unenthusiastic about Boomer as the Sixes were about her, but Boomer had no one because she had left her. And as their plan for reconciliation was perverted and then began to crumble around them on New Caprica, Boomer lost her dream. Now, the other her, who had already shared her memories, had taken the life Boomer had longed to get back. “And for what?”

“Love,” Boomer responded trying to turn her head away. It had hurt deeply when Caprica had walked away from her. She understood the allure, the pull of Baltar and life Caprica had with him, but it still hurt.

Caprica snorted darkly. “Not love, lust, desperation, loneliness, maybe absolution. Need and love aren’t the same. A lesson it took me a long time to learn. Gaius loves Gaius, and what people can do for him.” Caprica let her hand slip away from Boomer’s face even though the other woman had stopped struggling. “Do you hate me?”

“No,” Boomer responded without hesitation reaching out for Caprica’s hand. “I would have left you if I could have gone back to Galactica without being spaced.”

Caprica smirked leaning her head into Boomer’s hand. “We’re becoming more and more like them every day.”

“By your command,” Boomer muttered darkly lifting her eyes to meet Caprica’s only to find her eyes had flickered away, unable to blasphemy herself but also unable to defend the increasingly directionless courses of action they had been taking.

When Caprica turned back to look at her, her eyes burned intensely, and then her lips were on Boomer’s, devouring her as her pulled her into her body.

“I want what we had before,” Caprica murmured breathlessly, her forehead resting against Boomer’s as her hands moved from Boomer’s waist to take her hands.

Boomer’s eyes fluttered shut as she was drawn into Caprica’s projection. They were back in her apartment on Caprica, sunlight streaming through the large windows that ran throughout, music playing on an old fashion crystal disc player that had once belonged to the grandmother she never had.
“No,” Boomer said shaking her head, forcing them out of the projection and back into her cold, metallic, blue tinted room.

Caprica stepped back away from her, her eyes squeezing closed.

Boomer followed her, grabbing her arms, holding her until Caprica opened her eyes, then she leaned forward and kissed her, her hand moving to Caprica’s face, holding her securely, her thumbs caressing her cheeks tenderly as she explored her mouth.

“Here,” Boomer said softly, slightly of breath when she pulled away. “It has to be here,” she continued looking around the room, looking at it as it was, for what it was. “We can’t live in the past.”

Caprica nodded and reached out taking Boomer’s hand in her own, simply holding it for a moment before leading her to the bed.

Caprica felt Boomer shift against her and forced her eyes open.

Boomer sat up, resting one of her hand on the other side of Caprica’s body so that she was leaning over the blonde and into her slightly, but was supporting her own weight. With her free hand as she reached out to brush some damp hair off of Caprica’s forehead, a smile touching her lips for the first time in so long that she couldn’t remember the last.

Caprica moved her hand to rest on Boomer’s thigh, stroking the smooth skin there gently as she looked up into Boomer’s smiling face.

It was bright again.
