Jane reached out, her hand just brushing against Maureen’s before she pulled it back.

Maureen stopped walking at the brief touch of Jane’s hand and turned around to look at the blonde questioningly.

Jane swallowed, her eyes flickering behind Maureen out into the hallway beyond the open door, a look of longing skittering across her features for a moment before she turned her gaze on Maureen once again.

“Stay,” Jane breathed out softly.

Maureen wasn’t sure whether it was a request or a command.

“I should go,” Maureen replied a long moment later though she remanded where she was, her eyes never leaving Jane’s.

“Stay anyway,” Jane murmured, her eyes beseeching as her hand twitched by her thigh for a few seconds before she finally reached out for Maureen once again. “I need you.” The words came out softly, barely a whisper; Jane looked down at the floor between them as she spoke.

“You don’t want to be alone,” Maureen said, the sentence coming out half sighed. Jane didn’t need her, Jane didn’t need anyone. It was why there was no more double meaning when she said Jane was her partner.

“No,” the response was firm and Jane was once again looking at Maureen’s face, waiting for the brunette to look up at her. “It isn’t about not being alone. It’s about being with you.”

They were silent for a long moment after Jane spoke, and finally the blonde sighed. She didn’t have the right to ask Maureen to stay just because for once she wanted someone to hold her. She had fucked up with Maureen when they were together, and she had continued to fuck up since. They had just started to get things back to the way they had been when the Neuro insanity began, and when she had seen how upset Maureen had been about her “death” she had gotten scared and pushed her away all over again.

The thing was, even though she kept pushing her away, there was no one she wanted to pull in more, and no one she trusted more to be close to her.
“You’re right,” Jane said out loud finally, a small almost apologetic smile touching her lips. “It’s late. You should go.”

Maureen watched Jane closely for a minute. She wondered about Jane’s sudden change of heart, the blonde wasn’t usually one to let something go until she had gotten what she wanted. But as she watched Jane she saw a tension and anxiousness in her stance, and she realized that Jane was trying to do the right thing by her for once.

“I’ll stay,” Maureen said. Jane was trying, so she would try too.

“You don’t have to,” Jane began, nonetheless stepping back to give Maureen room to enter the apartment.

“It’s not about what I have to do,” Maureen said stepping fully into the room and closing the door softly behind her. “It’s about being with you.”

Jane smiled.

Maureen loved it when Jane smiled.

“Wine?” Jane asked.

She was just being polite.

“No,” Maureen responded, shaking her head, her lips twitching slightly as she reached for Jane’s hand.

She knew Jane was just trying to be polite.

“Bedroom?” Jane asked. She was smiling again.

“That’s more like it,” Maureen replied.

She was smiling too.
