Brandi hovered awkwardly in the doorway to Mary’s room. Mary had been relatively quiet when she arrived home, and had stayed that way through a dinner she barely touched, before she had finally excused herself and retreated to her room.

“This isn’t a spectator sport,” Mary grumbled, face half buried in her pillow. “Either come in or go away. No being Belgium.”

Brandi scrunched up her face but walked into the room nonetheless; closing the door behind her once she was inside.

“You only said that last part, ‘cause you know I don’t know what it means,” the younger blonde grumbled making her way over to the side of Mary’s bed.

Mary flipped over so that she was lying on her back and turned to face her sister. “Coast to coast, L.A. to Chicago,” she sang softly, causing Brandi to smile. “Honestly, I don’t know why people complain about the American school system. Most kids talk real good ‘cept when not so much.”

“Shut up,” Brandi said, grabbing one of Mary’s pillows and swinging at her with it. “I’m not that bad,” she continued, hitting Mary one last time before placing the pillow back where she got it from. “I mean what does Belgium do that I need to know about, except make delicious chocolates?”

Mary opened her mouth to respond, but paused and then closed it. Brandi had a point there.

“You okay?” Brandi asked a few seconds later, her voice dropping as she looked over at Mary hesitantly, concern written all over her face.

“Me?” Mary asked eyebrows lifting on her forehead in surprise. “I’m always okay. It’s what people say about me. At the water cooler all you’ll hear is, ‘That Mary Shannon, she’s okay’.”

“Water cooler? What is this, a mid-90s sitcom?” Brandi responded, smiling a little though her eyes remained serious.

Mary rolled her eyes in response, though a small smile did touch her lips, and they descended back into silence.

“You’ve seemed a little … down,” Brandi began, breaking the silence for the second time in less than ten minutes, “since … the letter. About Dad,” she continued; her eyes on her lap as her fingers fiddled restlessly with the material of her skirt.

“The case I was working,” Mary began sighing a little. “These guys were my first, you know. I took it a little more personally than usual,” she continued glancing over at Brandi before angling her head back so that she was looking at the ceiling.

“It’s more than that,” Brandi said softly, shifting further onto the mattress and drawing her legs up onto the bed, curling them underneath her as she looked down at Mary. “I know …” Brandi began sighing, her hand lifting to tug at her ear.

Mary smiled at the gesture despite herself. She’d always found it particularly charming when Brandi did that.

“I know that I don’t really remember him and everything,” Brandi continued, dropping her hand and returning her eyes to Mary’s. She’d only been two when their father had disappeared. The only reason she knew what he looked like was because of photographs. “But, you can talk to me.”

“There’s nothing to talk about,” Mary said angling her head away from Brandi. “He was a bastard, and he’s gone. What else is there to say?”

Brandi was silent for a moment as she watched Mary, able to see her sister’s evasion etched in every tense line of her body.

“Plenty,” Brandi grumbled uncurling her legs and shifting towards the edge of the bed. “I know you think I’m like a complete idiot, but I …”

Mary sat up, her hand shooting out to catch Brandi’s wrist before she could slide completely off of the mattress.

“I don’t think you’re an idiot,” she said holding her sister’s eyes, wanting her to know she meant it. “Lazy, yes. Unmotivated, definitely. But I don’t think that you’re stupid.”

“Thanks Mar. That was great, really heart-warming,” Brandi replied frowning as she tried to twist her wrist out of Mary’s hand.

Sighing, Mary relented and loosened her hold giving Brandi her arm back.

“You always say stuff like that about Dad; that he was a bastard, that he was a selfish prick and that’s why he left. That I’m lucky I don’t remember him. That we’re lucky he left,” Brandi began planting her hands on mattress as she stared down at the floor. “But you loved him,” she continued turning her head so that she could see Mary. “I know you did. You’re only that mean and evasive when you care about something.”

“Squish,” Mary complained throwing an arm over her eyes. “I really can’t do this right now.”

“Then when? Some other time? The day after hell freezes over, maybe? Or a week after pigs fly?” Brandi asked, moving further onto the mattress once more.

Once she had shifted, she then stretched out next to Mary, and propped her head up on her hand. “Tell me about him?”

“Squish,” Mary said again, this time with a note of warning in her voice.

“Please,” Brandi said, her voice soft and beseeching as she reached out for Mary’s hand, and took it into her own. “I know next to nothing about him,” Brandi went on, pressing her body closer to Mary’s. “Mom won’t talk about him, and neither will you. But he was my father too,” she finished resting her head on Mary’s shoulder, keeping her sister’s hand firmly entwined with her own.

“That’s not the most effective argument to make while trying to manipulate me with your womanly charms,” Mary sighed turning her head to face Brandi, hesitating for a second before she pressed her lips against her sister’s forehead.

“I’m not trying to manipulate you,” Brandi said softly, her thumb stroking the back of Mary’s hand. “I’m just naturally charming.”

“Oh yeah?” Mary asked lifting an unconvinced eyebrow.

“Um hmm,” Brandi responded lifting her head so that she could see Mary, a large, mischievous smile spreading across her face, her eyes dancing happily for a moment before she lowered her head again.

Mary sighed and shifted uncomfortably. She hadn’t talked about her father, really talked about her father since, ever actually. The subject was just too painful. She didn’t want to think about him or about how his disappearance had affected her – when she was a little girl and still to that day.

“Please,” Brandi said again, angling her head up to press her lips against Mary’s neck, kissing the column of her throat tenderly.

“Fine,” Mary breathed out in the most frustrated tone she was capable of generating, ignoring Brandi as the younger woman smiled up at her victoriously.

Mary sighed again and then took a deep breath. “I don’t know, I guess my earliest memory of him is him looking down at me, smiling as I crawled around on the ground in front of him picking up busted tickets at the …”

---

Mary stopped talking, and closed her eyes, breathing in deeply again and again as she tried to control the emotions flooding through her. As she breathed in once more, she felt Brandi’s fingers against her cheek and gasped, her eyes shooting open to find her sister leaning over her, her thumbs trailing over her cheeks wiping away the tears she hadn’t been able to hold back.

“Are you okay?” Brandi asked softly, her thumb still stroking Mary’s cheek even though she had already cleared it of tears.

Mary nodded. She was still blinking a little more rapidly than usual, and she felt a little shaky, but she okay. In fact, she felt better than she had in a very long time.

“I shouldn’t have asked you to,” Brandi began, watching as Mary continued to blink in an attempt to fight back more tears. She had never seen her sister like this, never, and while she had learned a great deal about her father, she felt guilty at having put Mary through the emotional wringer to gain that knowledge.

“No, it’s,” Mary said meeting Brandi’s eyes, her hand squeezing Brandi’s which was still holding hers. “It’s okay. Really,” she said, a tiny smile coming to her lips. “I’m glad you made me talk about him. I don’t … I don’t think I realized how much I wanted to until now.”

“Really?” Brandi asked, her lips curling with worry as she looked down at Mary.

“Really,” Mary confirmed, reaching up to tuck some strands of blonde hair behind Brandi’s ear. “I promise.”

Brandi lowered her eyes, her head dipping down as well causing the strands of hair Mary had just tucked away to fall in front of her face once more.

“Thank you,” Brandi said softly, her voice rough and cracking a little as she spoke. She sighed softly. “I wish I could remember him,” she continued lifting her eyes to meet Mary’s once more. “I know that it hurts, but I still wish I could. He’s not even a memory to me, he’s just … a story.”

“Come here,” Mary said motioning for Brandi to settle down against her once more, wrapping her arms around her sister once she did, holding her close as Brandi pressed her face into the crook of her neck.

They lay like that for minutes, silently clinging to each as their chests rose and fell steadily; drawing comfort from the warmth of each others bodies until Brandi finally shifted.

“Mar,” Brandi breathed softly, her eyes looking down at Mary questioningly as she propped herself up on her arm so that she was looking down at her sister.

“Yeah,” Mary responded nodding, answering Brandi’s question before she had to ask it.

Brandi smiled a little at that and then leaned down, pressing her lips against Mary’s, kissing her softly, the caress now almost familiar. Mary shifted on the mattress and snuck her arm around Brandi’s waist, pulling the younger blonde on top of her as they continued to kiss, her lips parting to allow Brandi to deepen the kiss as the younger blonde settled against her.

Brandi’s hand moved down to Mary’s hip, resting there for a few seconds as they continued to kiss. And then her hand began to roam, moving over Mary’s stomach, and then across the side of her torso, drawing her shirt up as her hand moved; revealing soft skin that Brandi’s hand then returned to explore.

Brandi slipped her hand under Mary’s shirt, moving it up slowly towards the older blonde’s breasts, still kissing her as the tips of her fingers brushed against the under wire of Mary’s bra.

A few seconds later, Brandi stopped touching her.

“Are you laughing?” Brandi asked pulling back from Mary’s lips so that she could see her face.

“No,” Mary responded as her body shook under Brandi’s hands and she bit her bottom lip to keep from smiling.

“You are,” Brandi accused, as Mary’s lips twitched a little. “What’s so funny?” the younger blonde asked frowning; feeling more than a little self-conscious that Mary had started to laugh in the middle of being felt up.

“I don’t know if it’s actually funny,” Mary responded, finally getting her giggles under control, her face reddening a little as she glanced over at Brandi.

“Try me,” Brandi responded sounding distinctly unamused.

“I think I just did,” Mary replied, smirking.

Brandi simply looked down at her and pouted.

“It’s just, I caught Marshall making out with a former T.A of his in the back of his car last week,” Mary began to explain in the face of Brandi’s displeasure, her eyes drifting away from her sister’s as she contemplated whether she really wanted to admit to what she was contemplating admitting. “And, for like a split second after I opened the door, I kind of thought of you. And me. In a car,” Mary said went on, cursing herself for every syllable that came out of her mouth. “And then this,” she went on gesturing the petting that had just been going on, “kind of reminded me of that split second thought,” Mary finished clearly her throat.

Brandi was silent for a moment, and then a huge smile broke out over her face.

“You thought about making out with me in the back of a car?” Brandi asked happily.

“For a split second,” Mary emphasized though she knew that that didn’t really make a difference.

“You’re like a teenage boy,” Brandi teased.

“If I was a lesser person I’d take this opportunity to point out that you’re the one with your hand up my shirt,” Mary responded, arching a pale eyebrow up at Brandi, before smirking a little. “In other news, I’m a lesser person,” she added smiling fully.

“I guess it runs in the family,” Brandi responded beginning to walk her fingers up the underside of Mary’s breast when the older blonde groaned in frustration and caught her hand, dragging it down to a less erogenous zone.

“It’s late,” Mary began shifting uncomfortably under her sister.

Making out with Brandi was beginning to freak her out less – which she wasn’t convinced was a good thing – but the groping was new and would take some time to get used to – not that she should get used to it at all.

“It’s 10:30,” Brandi said glancing over at the clock on Mary’s bedside table, amusement clear in her voice. “What are you, like seven?”

“No. I’m old … and crotchety,” Mary responded forcing what she hoped to be a suitably crotchety expression on her face.

“Aw, you’re not that crotchety,” Brandi responded stroking Mary’s nose.

“Oh, ha ha,” Mary fake laughed, as Brandi smiled down at her.

“Lemme stay for a while?” Brandi asked shyly, looking at Mary through her eyelashes. “I promise, no more horny teenage touching,” she continued holding her hands up innocently.

“Assuming I believe you,” Mary began, which wasn’t at all a given since horny teenage touching seemed to be what they did these days – ironically even more than they did when they were horny teenagers, “what are we going to do then?” she continued eyeing Brandi suspiciously. “I don’t wanna talk anymore,” she finished, her voice taking on a slightly petulant and slightly combative tone.

Brandi was silent for a moment, and then practically began to vibrate as she looked down at Mary excitedly.

“Let’s watch Sleepaway Camp,” the younger blonde proposed her eyes wide with anticipation.

“Ugh,” Mary replied rolling her eyes, though she was smiling a little. Brandi had made her watch that movie about a half a gajillion times the summer before she graduated from High School. “Judy’s such a bitch.”

“I know,” Brandi agreed shifting off of Mary and settling down beside her on the mattress. “Her boobs weren’t that big either.”

Mary turned to look at Brandi at that, her face contorting into a ‘wtf’ expression before she began to laugh, her laughter making Brandi begin to as well, until they were both shaking as tears leaked from their eyes.

“I hope cropped cut off tee’s make a come back,” Brandi sighed dreamily.

“They’re perfect for playing slo-pitch,” Mary added in an equally dreamy tone, “Especially if you’re a big, bad bully, who uses your words and superior pitching skills to make sissy weaklings cry.”

“It’s like Westside Story with baseball … and hot pants,” Brandi added grinning.

“When you're a Jet/You're a Jet all the way/From your first cigarette/To your last dyin' day,” Mary sang sending Brandi into a fit that had her rolling into her body and burying her face in her shoulder as her body shook with laughter.

“So, Sleepaway Camp?” Brandi asked when she had recovered from her laugh attack.

“Uh, yeah,” Mary responded looking at Brandi like she was crazy. “Is there any vodka left around here?” she asked a few seconds later as Brandi slipped off the bed to go search out the old tape. She was pretty sure that it was a scientific fact that they’d need vodka to make it through the movie.

“Screwdrivers?” Brandi asked hopefully, turning to face Mary halfway to the door.

“Yeah, just like High School,” Mary responded patting her heart as she made a cooing sound. “Fuzzy memories.”

“There’s still some in the liquor cabinet,” Brandi responded smiling. “You grab the booze I’ll grab the movie, and meet you back here in ten?”

The television in the living room was larger, but she wanted to snuggle during the movie and they couldn’t do that in the living room with their mom still up and about.

Brandi smiled. It really was almost just like High School again.

“Oh, fine, make me move,” Mary grumbled as she rolled off the bed and into a standing position. “Go on, get,” Mary said adopting the gruff accent of a southern gentleman from the turn of the century as she waved her hand at Brandi. “The bar awaits your arrival.”

Brandi smiled and started for the door once more.

It was good to be home again.

The End

You know, I was going to beg you to write some Mary/Brandi again because the first piece was so funny, charming and sweet, and here you go delivering an even sweeter story. This is so full of tenderness and affection it makes sistercest seem like the only way to go.

“It’s 10:30,” Brandi said glancing over at the clock on Mary’s bedside table, amusement clear in her voice. “What are you, like seven?”

“No. I’m old … and crotchety,” Mary responded forcing what she hoped to be a suitably crotchety expression on her face.

Loved this.

Cute! ;) These two lines really made me giggle:

“Then when? Some other time? The day after hell freezes over, maybe? Or a week after pigs fly?”

“If I was a lesser person I’d take this opportunity to point out that you’re the one with your hand up my shirt,” Mary responded, arching a pale eyebrow up at Brandi, before smirking a little. “In other news, I’m a lesser person,” she added smiling fully.

Awww. They are so damn sweet together. I love Mary's general bitchiness and their banter.

“I hope cropped cut off tee’s make a come back,"
Yeah, I'm sure Mar hopes so, too, Brandi.

Last night's epi had very little interaction, but it was so good.

And though not directly Mary/Brandi related, yay for the end with the suitcase!

I love Mary's general bitchiness and their banter.

I know! Writing Mary is so fun because you can pretty much have her say anything, lol.

Yeah, I'm sure Mar hopes so, too, Brandi.

And now I NEED to put Brandi in a bikini again and have Mary ogle the hell out of her, because Brandi in a bikini was such a beautiful sight that I almost cried. *so hot*

Last night's epi had very little interaction, but it was so good.

That's the beauty of subtext, any interaction can be expanded upon. I still haven't seen the episode though *sobs* It takes a while for people to upload In Plain Sight so I always have to wait for days *sobs again*
