White Witch, Black Curse Preview
Feb. 6th, 2009 08:23 amAiight, I'm down with it so far. In fact the sexy ending to chapter two really made me which I could scroll down and read more.
Link to the first two chapters if anyone needs it.
1. I have no patience so I'm going to start with the stuff that I really care about first. By the end of chapter one, I was getting a little depressed, but chapter two with plenty of Ivy perked me right back up. I think that any scene is made about 10x more enjoyable by the presence of Ivy. Ivy is my crack.
First of all, Rachel checking Ivy out when they first see each other, and being like so chemically relaxed by just the sight of her that Ford kind of swooned beside her because of the rush of emotions was cool. Mostly I want to thank Kim for painting the picture of Ivy in low-rising black jeans leaning over a counter for me though. I pictured it ... and it was good. I totally would have been like that orderly that walked into a wall checking her out.
Secondly, I like that Ivy is currently (and better stay, K.H!!!!) in the middle of both of the investigations that are going on. Seeing her at the hospital, in Glenn's room, interacting with everyone was very nice. It makes her feel like a part of Rachel's life, instead of just an accessory she takes out when she needs something. Rachel referred to Ivy as her partner like a gagillion times this book so far, so it's nice to see Ivy being a partner.
I don't know why, but I really liked the moment where Edden handed Ivy the address and Ivy without a word just handed it to Rachel so that she could put it away. It just struck me as a very sweet couple-y gesture. Like how many times have you seen boyfriends/husbands just hand something to their girlfriends/wives to put in their purse without like a second thought. I bet Ivy has Rachel sneak candy bars into the movies for her, lol.
"Do you have time tonight to go out and sniff the carpet?" LOL! LOLxinfinity! Ivy stopping dead in her tracks and staring at Rachel in response to this made me laugh out loud. You know in her head, Ivy was thinking "I always have time to sniff your carpet" No wonder Ford seemed so uncomfortable in the wake of this exchange, lol. Ivy was probably bombarding him with waves of hopeful lust.
And finally, Rachel's "I've lived with you for a year. I know what you smell like," was great. Note to Rachel: Living with someone for a year (if they really are JUST your roomate) is usually NOT enough for you to be able to identify their scent FROM THE CARPET OF A ROOM THAT HAS BEEN ABANDONED FOR FIVE MONTHS! Jesus! I saw my roomate yesterday, and wouldn't be able to identify their scent at any time, ever.
Also, "'My pleasure,' she said, her gray silk voice so thick with anticipation that ..." Holy hotness Batman! Seriously, Ivy with her threatening gray silk purr is like that hottest thing ever. I was turned on, and I think Rachel was too.
Oh, and I hope Glenn will be alright and shit ... whatever, the Rachel/Ivy was all I cared about. I'm not even gon' front.
2. Chapter One - I'm glad that the investigation with Kisten is going forth. I do want to find out who killed him. I think this chapters major problem was that it suffered from a serious lack of Ivy. Everything is just 'alright' without her. It was interesting to see Rachel try and piece things together though, although the 'woe is me, Kisten angst' was starting to get to me.
Was NOT happy to see Marshall again. Was somewhat relieved that they are just platonic friends at this point (it best stay that way K.H!!!!) I honestly don't think it will, because Marshall has a penis which is like kyrptonite to Rachel (I so felt for that line in an earlier book where Ivy was like, "She won't resist you. You're male." to Kisten, because it's so true. If Ivy was a dude, Rachel would have jumped her their first night as I.S. runners together). But at least I wasn't assaulted with Rachel/Marshall much in the first two chapters.
3. Really, right now I'm just on an Ivy high. I really hope that the second chapter means more face time for her this book. She's the reason I'm here to be perfectly honest. Also, I enjoyed their relatively angst free interactions so far. I'm all for seeing the friendship, and seeing them interact positively with each other for this book, with an undercurrent of sexual tension. I want to see Rachel relaxed around Ivy, being happy to see Ivy - like she was in the second chapter - instead of anxious about what angst seeing Ivy will bring. Them being happy to see each other, and walking close to each other, and doing unconsciously couple-y things will make me happy. As much as I loved the biting/kissing and stuff, it always left me with a knot in my stomach because every scene ended SO FML HORRIBLY. Seeing them be all 'old married couple' and supportive of each other will leave a nice warm spot in my heart, that I really need when it comes to these two.
And that's the end of my rambling...

Date: 2009-02-06 02:38 pm (UTC)Hope the Borders here in Melbourne stocks it soon after the 24th! I don't want to have to order it from amazon.com... That takes forever!
Ivy in low-rise black jeans leaning over the counter! *drools* I picture my current crush as Ivy. A hetero Ivy, sure. But she's so fucking awesome it makes me love the books that much more when I read them... and imagine her in low-rise black jeans bending over.

Date: 2009-02-06 09:40 pm (UTC)Yeah, it's given me a nice feeling of anticipation for the book. I was feeling a bit worn out after finishing six books, but this has pumped me up again.
It does sound like Ivy will be playing bigger part is this next book and I hope it remains that way.
I certainly hope so. Everything is better with Ivy. I'm not holding my breath though, I've thought that before only to have her disappear mysteriously for like 100 pages *not amused glare*

Date: 2009-02-06 04:24 pm (UTC)I want to know what significance Rachel being able to distinguish between different vamps' scents has.
I read a couple of spoilers regarding 2 of the other things you mentioned, but I don't want to ruin anything for you or other readers *bites tongue*

Date: 2009-02-06 09:43 pm (UTC)It was a thing of beauty. Cause you know from Ivy's reaction that her mind went straight to the gutter - as did mine.
I want to know what significance Rachel being able to distinguish between different vamps' scents has.
I'd love to think that's it's because of Rachel's pure and radiant love for Ivy, but it probably has something to do with her having demon blood or something.

Oh, just respond in a screened comment and spoil me. I've been spoiled for the whole series so far so being spoiled for parts of this book will just be par the course ;)

Date: 2009-02-06 07:02 pm (UTC)munchingsniffing comment. :)Lets hope that Ivy is actually a presence in this book instead staying in the background most of the time.
But I've been burned before. In the start of ODW Rachel and Ivy were supposed to go trick & treating together, which never materialized. :/
Boo.

Date: 2009-02-06 09:48 pm (UTC)This. It was pure hilarity. Trudging through chapter one was totally worth it for that.

I know, right! For someone who's supposed to be SO important to Rachel, she's sure not around a lot. Plus, everything is better with Ivy.
But I've been burned before.
This. I'm not holding my breath out for tons of Ivy. I've thought that before only to have her disappear mysteriously for like 100 pages. I'd be very pleased if it turned into a FFoC situation where I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of page time Ivy's given.
In the start of ODW Rachel and Ivy were supposed to go trick & treating together, which never materialized. :/
I know! What fuckery was that!?!?! I was totally looking forward to that, them hanging and bonding looking all sexy and shit, and then NOTHING! It's like Rachel spent more time shopping with Trent fucking Kalamack than she did with her own roommate. *glares at K.H* Not cool, Kimmy Gibler, not cool.

Date: 2009-02-06 09:15 pm (UTC)And I second the bit about candy bars in fic. OH! And something set in the hospital, 'cause the whole bit about Ivy knowing the nurses would be funny as hell. (The fact that she actually referenced that little 'throw-away funny' from earlier made me glee, btw.)

Date: 2009-02-06 09:54 pm (UTC)This one will make you squee like crazy AND want to rip your hair out.
but the whole bit about "a year where I was confused" gave me whiplash.
This line was pure fuckery! YOU'RE STILL CONFUSED YOU CLOSETED IDIOT! Basically, in ODW Rachel thinks that she's made a decision when it comes to Ivy. But she totally contradicts herself afterward, so basically nothing (or at the very least) very little is resolved between them ... as her paragraph of checking Ivy out bending over the nurses station proves. *le sigh*

I loved the throwback candy stripper reference too. A piece like this would be hard though, cause it'd have to be from Ivy's POV, and Ivy's POV = unending angst to me. I'm really curious to see if I could do a light-hearted piece from Ivy's POV though. I'll attempt it, but I make no promises. This, is my Everest! ;)
