Mary sighed deeply and scrubbed her fingers over her face as she kicked the back door shut with her foot. Her night had been ass, and not the fun kind of ass. She’d been up since
Mary smiled softly as she opened her bedroom door and saw Brandi’s lithe figure sprawled diagonally across her bed, taking up the entire king-sized mattress. Brandi still slept like a six year old, but at that moment there was no sight that Mary wanted to see more, and as she set about taking off her clothes and getting ready for bed, she felt the tension that had been running through her all day finally begin to dissipate.
“Hey.”
Brandi’s voice was quiet and scratchy with sleep, and Mary’s smile grew as she looked over towards the bed to see Brandi sleepily rubbing her eyes with the heel of her hand.
Brandi could irritate her more than any other person on the planet, but she could also be the most precious thing Mary had ever seen.
“Hey,” Mary responded, padding towards the bed clad only in her underwear.
“What happened?” Brandi asked, her voice still huskier than usual as Mary slipped into the bed beside her and wrapped her arms around Brandi, burying her face in the younger woman’s hair and inhaling.
“It was nothing serious,” Mary sighed, feeling herself unspool and relax even more as the warmth from Brandi’s body soaked into her. “My crap for brains witness somehow managed to light his hair on fire with a sparkler and was checked into the hospital for minor scapal burns.”
Brandi snorted derisively, her body vibrating lightly in Mary’s arms. “That’s stupid,” she declared.
“I know, right?” Mary responded, extremely pleased that Brandi had the same reaction she had.
When she’d gotten her first look at the singed right side of the witnesses head, she’d had to excuse herself and go out into the hallway, where she’d promptly collapsed against the wall in a fit of giggles. Mary had thought that it was a perfectly reasonable response, but the attending nurse had given her a look, and she was beginning to wonder if she was the only person left in
“Someone that dumb shouldn’t be the lynch-pin of anything, and yet …” Mary continued trailing off to occupy her lips with the far more pleasurable task of kissing Brandi’s shoulder.
“He’s alright though?” Brandi asked, sighing softly as Mary’s lips trailed gently over to throat.
“Yeah, he just looks like an idiot,” Mary whispered against the column of Brandi’s throat.
“Good,” Brandi murmured, a speculative look that Mary couldn’t see coming over her features as Mary’s hand began to explore her body under the blanket. “So,” she continued, her voice rising chipperly as she turned around in Mary’s arms so that they were facing each other. “How’d dinner go?”
“Dinner?” Mary asked distractedly as she tried to figure out where to put her hands on Brandi to get back to what she had been doing a few seconds before.
“You and
Mary sighed. She’d forgotten that Jinx and Brandi had been at the bar as she slowly crushed Raph’s dreams over breadsticks and cheap wine. That was what was so great about her life really, the fun never stopped.
“You’ve never really praised his conversational skills, so I was just wondering what incredibly fascinating thing you two were talking about,” Brandi continued, her eyes narrowing and focusing on Mary at her sister’s soft sigh.
Mary looked at Brandi keenly, and then arched a pale eyebrow at her. She’d heard that tone from Brandi before. Far, far too many times before truth be told, and she knew exactly what it was.
“Oh my god,” Mary drawled, smiling as Brandi gazed at her with her best nonchalant expression in place. “You’re jealous,” Mary accused incredulously, more than a touch of amusement was presenting itself in her tone of voice.
“I’m not jealous,” Brandi responded immediately, her response too quick and defensive to be believable.
“You are,” Mary said, her voice a little more sober as she stared at her sister’s tense back. “You’re jealous,” she repeated, stroking Brandi’s arm softly.
“Am not,” Brandi insisted before shifting her body away from Mary’s irritably. “If you want to waste your time hanging out with a grown ass man who chases a ball around in a circle for a living that’s your business,” she continued in a ‘displeased but trying desperately not to show it’ tone of voice.
“It’s really more of a diamond shape,” Mary began thoughtfully, stopping her ruminations when she heard Brandi sigh deeply. The exhalation was the quintessence of irritation, and Mary realized that this wasn’t the time for one of her ‘ill-timed but ultimately charming’ segues. “Which isn’t really important since I won’t be ‘hanging out with him’ anymore,” she continued drawing her hand away from Brandi’s arm and laying back on the mattress leaving her staring at the ceiling.
“What?” Brandi asked softly, turning around so that she was facing Mary. “Why?”
“We broke up,” Mary said keeping her eyes focused on the ceiling, though she was pleased that Brandi was looking at her again.
“Oh, whatever,” Brandi said playing with the sheet that was draped loosely over her body. “You guys break up every two days,” she continued softly, hope and ambivalence warring in her tone.
Mary shrugged. “Not like this,” she said looking over at Brandi. “He said I’ve been ignoring him, and lying to him, and that I’ve been even more distant than usual, and that I’ve been strangely frigid,” she finished frowning as she sighed.
She hadn’t been able to, you know, with him since the thing with Brandi had started, and she knew that that, more than any of the other things he had listed, was what was making him suspicious, because ‘you know’ had been the one thing that she had been consistent with providing in the past.
“You’re not frigid,” Brandi said softly, shifting closer to Mary on the bed and placing her hand on her sister’s stomach.
Mary smiled at her and then shook her head. “Not with you. Not these days,” she breathed out softly, her hand moving to brush some hair out of Brandi’s face. “But that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?”
Brandi was quiet for a moment as she watched Mary thoughtfully. “What’d you say?” She asked finally, her hand slipping under Mary’s tank top to rub soothingly against the warm flesh underneath.
Mary sighed, her eyes closing briefly before she spoke.
“Nothing,” she breathed out. “What could I say? Somehow, I didn’t think ‘I know it seems that way, but I’m just really swamped at work. Being at the wrong place, at the wrong time, is totally the new black. Oh, and I seem to have developed a sexual obsession with my sister, and have pretty much been spending all of my free time with my head between her legs’ would cut it,” Mary sighed stroking Brandi’s cheek. “I mean, who hasn’t heard that one before?”
Despite herself, Brandi smiled. Mary was good at making her do that, even when she didn’t want to. Sighing softly, Brandi tilted her head to the side and pressed a kiss against Mary’s palm.
“It’s the oldest story in the book,” she whispered a few seconds later, still smiling gently.
“The only thing that could have made it more cliché would have been to start it with, ‘it’s not you, it’s me’,” Mary responded feeling her body relax a little at the familiar banter.
“Are you upset?” Brandi asked a few seconds later, managing to keep her tone neutral though her eyes were focused intensely on Mary.
“Not exactly, more … confused,” Mary replied sighing, the tension that had just left her body rushing back in the wake of the question. “I just keep wondering, what are we doing, really?” Mary continued forcing herself to hold Brandi’s eyes. “I just … I essentially just broke up with my boyfriend because of you, but where is this going?” she asked her eyes squeezing shut momentarily. “Sneaking into each other’s rooms at night, cuddling on the couch worrying about Jinx walking in on us,” she went on shaking her head. “
Brandi’s eyes dropped from Mary’s, and for a few seconds she took up an inspection of the bed sheets.
“Why not?” Brandi asked softly as her eyes lifted to meet Mary’s once more. “I like being with you, you like being with me,” she started carefully, taking far more time and precision with her words than she usually did. “I know when your birthday is,” she said making Mary smile a little bit, “and that you won’t eat eggs unless they’re scrambled. I know that for some insane reason you don’t like red wrapping paper, and that even though you pretend like you just found them walking through Barnes & Noble, that you your bookshelf is full of picks from Oprah’s book club,” she continued as Mary scrunched her face up and looked away in embarrassment. “We’ve had a lifetime to learn to deal with each others personality quirks. And, I think so far we’ve been pretty good together. We’ve certainly done way better together than we have with anyone else at least,” Brandi went on, her voice cracking a little as she spoke.
She’d been much happier since coming back to Albuquerque, and just laying beside Mary made her feel more cherished and loved than sex with any of her boyfriends had.
“Besides, if we aren’t doing this, we’d probably just end up getting married and divorced a couple of times, before we gave up on love completely and ended up moving in together anyway,” Brandi started up again, a small frown touching her lips as she spoke. “So why not just bypass the horrible, emotionally and financially damaging relationships, and just be together now?”
“Not really a romantic, are you?” Mary asked, her lips quirking nonetheless as she gazed at her sister.
Brandi shook her head and then smiled as well. “Neither are you,” the younger blonde responded.
Mary shrugged, acknowledging it as the truth. “Do you really want all of
“It’s better than the reputation I have now,” Brandi replied, smirking.
Mary smiled at that as well, sharing a peaceful moment with Brandi before she became serious once more.
“What if you meet someone? Or I meet someone? Or we wake up one morning and can’t stand each other?” she asked, her mind involuntarily remembering Don and Ruth and how miserable they were, trapped in a marriage that neither of them desired. “What if we break up?” Mary asked softly.
If things went bad between her and Brandi, there would be no clean break. They were inextricably linked together, and would never be able to escape each other completely.
Brandi stared at her for a minute and then shrugged. “Then I guess we break up,” she responded simply. “I’m not a psychic Mar, I don’t know how this is going to end up. But I want to try,” she continued, taking Mary’s hand in hers. “Besides, no matter what happens with … this,” she went on looking between them for a second, “we’re still sisters, so we’ll never really break up … not completely. I’m always gonna love you, no matter how much of a door knob you are.”
Mary stared at Brandi silently for a few seconds, her lips involuntarily turning up in a reluctant smile. “I really shouldn’t find that sweet,” she breathed out.
“But you do,” Brandi said, leaning over Mary to place a soft kiss on her mouth.
“I do,” Mary confirmed somewhat unnecessarily, her hand sneaking around Brandi’s neck once she had finished talking, drawing the younger blonde’s lips against hers again, holding her tightly as they kissed. “You’re just so frickin’ cute,” Mary breathed out when they pulled away from each other.
“Of course I am. I’m Squish. And I shall be yours and I shall be your Squish,” Brandi said smiling, and then laughing as Mary rolled her eyes at her, before she leaned down to kiss Mary gently.
“What?” Brandi asked a few moments later in the mockingly patronizing tone usually reserved for talking to a pouting year old.
“It’s just … it’s so unfair,” Mary responded, relaxing against the mattress as Brandi’s touch became a bit more firm. “I came up with that nickname way before that stupid movie even came out. But now, everyone’s like ‘oh, you must have really liked’ insert name of stupid fish movie that I can’t even remember anyway’.”
“Aw, don’t be grumpy,” Brandi said stroking Mary’s cheek. “First of all, Finding Nemo was fantastic. It’s maybe one of the greatest movies ever,” Brandi continued bending down to kiss the tip of Mary’s nose, not a trace of irony in her voice. “And secondly, I know you came up with it first and will continue to worship your wit,” she finished leaning down to kiss Mary’s lips once more.
“Damn straight,” Mary murmured, appeased by Brandi’s praising of her.
“Not very, but that’s okay. I love that about you,” Brandi replied with a smirk, tapping Mary on the tip of the nose because she knew it would bug her, before she leaned down and kissed the older blonde softly, knowing that it would diffuse any complaining Mary might have felt inclined to do.
Mary sighed, and relaxed beneath Brandi, giving herself over to her sister’s ministration. Being kissed by Brandi was much more fun than yelling at her, so even though Mary didn’t love her nose being tapped like she was a naughty puppy, she decided to overlook it.
“Do you know what I love about you?” Mary whispered as Brandi pulled back from her lips a minute later.
“What?” Brandi asked, leaning down to place a series small, quick kisses on Mary’s lips.
“How quickly you can undress,” Mary replied, holding Brandi’s eyes steadily for a few seconds before she smiled rakishly at her sister.
“Nice, Mar. Really, suave,” Brandi husked, rolling her eyes at Mary as she stared down at her.
Mary’s smile became even more mischievous at that, and she lifted her hands in front of Brandi and made a honking motion with them.
Brandi tried to frown as she stared down at Mary, but her facials muscles wouldn’t cooperate with her, and within seconds she had a large smile settled across her lips.
“I really shouldn’t find that sweet,” Brandi breathed out a moment later, her eyes crinkling playfully as she tossed Mary’s earlier words back at her.
“But you do,” Mary said, leaning up to capture Brandi’s lips with her own.
“I do,” Brandi whispered.
And then she proceeded to take off the clothes that Mary was so unimpressed with.

Date: 2009-05-14 01:01 am (UTC)They really are. They have such inappropriate chemistry on the show. I can't help but love them.
Not sure if I've already asked this... but what show are they from?
A show called "In Plain Sight". I'm not sure what network it's on. I want to say USA but I'm not sure that's actually a network, lol. I just download it so I don't know. It's a good show though. Mary is hilarious, and Brandi is precious. Marshall, who I don't write much is a totally winner as well. I'd definitely recommend checking it out.
