True Blood - 1x11 - Frenzy

It's been a while since I made a True Blood post, but with the return of Pam and ERW making her entrance I couldn't resist!

1. Moar Sophie-Ann. I'm glad she's going to be around next season, because I'm hooked now.
I felt that Evan Rachel Wood (ERW) was a little bit off in the teaser part of the show (maybe the fangs made it hard for her to speak properly), but very soon the performance became really captivating (in fact, she's won me over so much that I actually will refer to her as Evan Rachel Wood, instead of Rachel Evan Wood, which is what I called her during the Marilyn Manson phase because it bugs her and her dating himfucking creeped me out bugged me.).
I want to watch the episode again, because I think that she put it a really nuanced performance, and from what I've read on other boards people seem to really be hating on her, but after the teaser where she did seem a little off I thought it was a damn good performance and that the affectated nature of it was intentional. Almost like Sophie-Ann is putting on a show for people and so ERW's performance as Sophie is broader than she would usually play it.
I appreciated that she had some energy as well, the monotone boredness and/or brooding stoicality of the vampires on the show is a bit much to take sometimes. I liked that Sophie was energetic and well lit. Also, her style is amazing. I loved that sitting room, and her outfit and her hair and her general are of affectation so much. Glamorous sexy bitch. Since the creaters are probably going to continue to do nothing with Pam, I hope that Sophie-Ann gets a good amount of screen time next season. "I haven't been attracted to a man since the Eisenhower administration", lol! Also, loved how Sophie-Ann is a total slash writer, telling Bill that he and Eric should just do it already and then philosophizing on the joys watching menfolk touch each other.
Also, Sophie-Ann feeding from both of Hadley's femoral arteries was hot. And I won't feel bad about saying that, because when Sophie-Ann dipped her head down, Hadley sounded like she was hella enjoying whatever was going on off-screen.
2. Speaking of Pam ... hello darling! Oh my god, that outfit was so amazing. Only Pam could pull off something like that. Kristen Bauer is so good, they really need to utilize her more. That eye-roll she gave when Eric asked if Sam could give him Sookie was amazing. And then her bitching about the kids for the rest of the visit, insulting them in Swedish made my day.
I also really liked Eric in that scene. "Teacup humans", lol. Eric is always at his best when he and Pam on or screen together being snarky and fabulous. Honestly, I find him really amusing when he's not acting above everything (and when's he's not around Sookie). Both Bill and Eric are greatly improved by not being around Sookie, and Sookie by not being around them.
I still don't get all of the Eric swooning though. I mean, even though it was funny he was discussing children as a delicacy. That's just not okay. I can be amused by him, but I don't think I'll ever really be able to see him as a love interest for a human when he would consider any of her offspring to be a tasty snack.
Also, speaking of Eric, not only was his windswept look when he arrived at Sophie-Ann's hilarious, but I liked that he called Bill out on giving Sookie his blood the second night he met her. You have no right to be all up on that high-horse Bill.
3. Tara, thee is dumb girl! I'm sorry, it's true that Sookie has done stupid shit for Bill, but just because someone else acts like a moron it doesn't mean that you should act like a moron too. And Tara's complete lack of a plan running back for Eggs, is far stupider than anything Sookie has done, and Sookie has done some pretty fucking stupid shit. So, bascially, Tara continues to break my heart.
4. I liked that we got confirmation that Lafayette was having sex dreams about Eric too! Seriously, this episode was full of ho!yay and les!yay.
5. Gran's house it a goddamn nightmare these days. I felt like I was watching "Blindness" as Sookie entered the complete wasteland that had once been her grandmother's house. I felt for her when she was talking about the defilement of the place because I've been thinking the same thing the whole time, and it really became clear this episode how much Maryann and her followers had wrecked the place.
Speaking of Sookie, I actually really liked Sookie this episode. In fact, I generally enjoy Sookie when she's not interacting with Bill. The Sookie/Lafayette tag team was funny (fur-lined handcuffs), touching (Sookie's concern for how traumatized he was, and their talk about Eric being in their heads), and you know ... creepy as hell at the end there.
6. Poor Jessica. There wasn't too much of her this episode, but what there was was heart-breaking. Normally, I would love a man being that dedicated to his mother, but Hoyt's mother is such a nasty piece of work. The only thing she has going for her that makes her better than Lettie Mae is that she isn't an alcoholic. She's just a really hateful woman, and it's not Maryann's influence. She was a nasty piece of work before she got under Maryann's influence. Jessica does need to work on her control, but having her and Hoyt separate because his mother is a spiteful hatemonger is too heart-breaking. Jessica and Hoyt have got no one else they can really count on, so at least them be able to comfort each other!
7. Jason Stackhouse is an amusing moron. I usually never agree with Sam, but he was right this episode. As much fun as it was to hear Jason speculating about whether Sam ever turns into a dog and then does it with a lady dog, or whether he could turn himself into a chicken and lay his own eggs was funny, but Jason is a shit planner. Honestly, if he and Andy are Bon Temps last chance at survival then I'll just wave goodbye to Bon Temps now. I really, really hope that he's heading for a life lesson here. Going half-cocked into situations is not behavior that should be encouraged.
8. I don't even want to know what that guy in the sink was playing with. *full body shudder* Sookie having to snuggle with Dr. Phlox was also way creepy, though it was made way better by the scene ending with Sookie hitting him over the head with a frying pan.
I'm sure there's more that I could say, but I can't think of it at the moment if there is.
*is sad we have to wait two weeks for the season finale*

Date: 2009-09-01 02:16 am (UTC)Honestly, I think he didn't want Hadley contacting Sookie, because he didn't want Sookie to know that he had been in contact with Queen. Sophie-Ann knew a lot about what was going on in Bon Temps, and Bill is the most likely source of that info. If Hadley were to let it slip to Sookie when they talked that she had heard Sophie-Ann talking about Bill/to Bill or something, then it could make things really uncomfortable for Bill.
So yeah, a really douche-y move. Bill's kind of douche-y most of the time though, so I'm not too surprised. I really wasn't impressed with the fact that he couldn't feel Jessica's distress (or that he wasn't all that concerned with it if he did). He really is an awful maker. She doesn't need to know about recycling Bill, she was born in the 90s! She knows how to recycle. What she needs to know is how to control her instincts so that she doesn't attack really, really, really annoying mothers!

Date: 2009-09-01 02:45 am (UTC)The Queen was brilliant(so lively) and I was amazed how Hadley managed to be cute and sexy all at the same time.
Pam, oh Pam. There are no words to describe that outfit. The entire time she was on screen I was trying to figure out what it was made of...pleather(she wouldn't dare to wear such a material), leather(but real shiny), sequins, or last but certainly not least leather with sequins. Alas, I don't know.
I agree Bill was a total douche for not telling Hadley what happened to Gran. But I couldn't help but laugh and love the dick move he pulled on Eric by not telling him he already got all the Maenad info.
All of Lafayette and Sookie’s interactions were awesome.
This is my favorite episode of True blood thus far. I can't wait for the next.

Date: 2009-09-01 04:08 am (UTC)I enjoyed it a lot too. Thank goodness for my f-list, cause from reading TWoP it seemed like everyone hated it (and ERW).
The Queen was brilliant(so lively) and I was amazed how Hadley managed to be cute and sexy all at the same time.
Yeah, I really enjoyed them both. Lindsay Haun really did do quite a lot with the few lines Hadley had. I also thought that she had a great mix of innocent sweetness and dirty girl going on.
The entire time she was on screen I was trying to figure out what it was made of..
When I saw the promo pics of their outfits I thought this scene was going to be a flashback to the 80s. But no. I like Pam's gumption wearing that in 2009. She worked it though. I'm feeling nostalgia for the 80s these days (I've watched "The Informers" twice, and I've been listening to White Lies almost endlessly) so I appreciated her glamor!

Date: 2009-09-01 02:54 am (UTC)Yes! Which is why the whole having to wait forever to see her in season 3 is going to kill me. I'm really intrigued by Sophie-Ann, she obviously enjoys being a vampire. Yet she has a day room, so you know a part of her, misses being human. At least that's what I'm thinking and I hope we'll get to really know her and that she won't just be some caricature.
LOL, I know. I get the feeling that Pam could wear just about anything and we would still be in love with her.
Jessica managed to break my heart in just her one scene. I really feel for her. I mean she's young and that alone should make it hard for her to control herself, but I'm sure it doesn't help that her Maker is really no help whatsoever in that department too. The girl has no guidance, so she's really on her own.
You know what I would love? A scene with Pam, Sophie-Ann and Jessica. Although I'm not sure if my TV or my heart could handle it.

Date: 2009-09-01 04:17 am (UTC)Yeah, she's really interesting so far. I really got a feeling from her like she was playing at being a grown up as well, and I got a kick out of the teenager showing through in her every once in a while. I'm also glad they have ERW playing her as well, because she's a good enough actress that she can keep Sophie from becoming a caricature.
I get the feeling that Pam could wear just about anything and we would still be in love with her.
This. I just love Pam. She can really do no wrong. I even found her hatred of children amusing (even though those kids were cute as a button!)
The girl has no guidance, so she's really on her own.
This. Bill really is the Worst. Maker. Ever. He has completely screwed Jessica over again and again. You'd think he'd feel a bit more responsibility to her considering he's the one who ripped her life away from her. He has left her to coast so much.
Really, Bill has been such a douche lately. I feel like he's heading for a major comeupance where he's going to be called on a lot of the shit he's been pulling.
A scene with Pam, Sophie-Ann and Jessica.
I would love this too, but I doubt it. They don't care enough about Pam on the show, and Jessica meeting Sophie-Ann would require Beel to remember that she's alive (well, not really but you know what I mean.)
Honestly, I wish the show would go to interactions between female characters as much as they focus on the interactions between male characters. We get a bajillion Bill/Eric scenes, and Eric/Godric scenes, but very little female/female scenes, not even really with BFFs Tara and Sookie. I really liked the interactions between Sookie/Jessica and not even really in a femslashy way. Let the girls talk to each other dammit!

Date: 2009-09-01 05:11 am (UTC)And this is really why I can't ever get behind the guy. I mean when you think about it, if there is anyone out there who would know how not to treat your childe, it's him. He hates the way Lorena made him, so you would think he would do whatever was in his power to do right by Jessica. But to me the guy is just one selfish little douche.
You make a great point here. I swear a lot of the time the main interactions are either male/female or male/male. Like with Jason and Andy in this episode. But rarely do I ever see any good female/female interaction on any show really. Which just sucks ass when you think about it.

Date: 2009-09-02 02:14 am (UTC)Oh, I know. Me too. I bet he takes notes! It's a credit to Ryan Kwanten and his portrayal that that reveal made go 'Oh, Jason'. He's such a lovable oaf.
AND yes ... we do hate you Jason because you get a lot of pussy.
Truth.
no subject
Date: 2009-09-02 02:13 am (UTC)Exactly. Bill's treatment of Jessica shows what a selfish dickwad he really is. Horrible as Lorena is, at least she didn't abandon Bill after turning him. It's like Bill was a grown ass man when he was turned, and he's been around for a long time since then, he should understand the concept of responsibility. He was forced to turn Jessica yes, but he did it, and you'd think he could take a few minutes out of eternity to show her the ropes.
But rarely do I ever see any good female/female interaction on any show really. Which just sucks ass when you think about it.
Exactly. Or, when you see female/female interactions they are not positive but catty (i.e. Pam/Jessica, Lorena/Sookie, random females at Merlott's, Hoyt's mom/Jessica) or destructive (i.e. Tara/Maryann). I like Sookie's friendships with Tara and Arlene and her mentorship (kind of) of Jessica, but none of these relationships get all that much time, which does suck ass.
no subject
Date: 2009-09-02 03:07 am (UTC)Absolutely. I think people tend to gloss over the fact that Jessica is still a 17 year old girl just because she's a vampire now. And one that was very sheltered. So she really needs double the guidance. I wouldn't mind seeing Lorena taking Jessica under her wing as some sort of way to get back at Bill, but since the the jerk doesn't give a damn I don't see that ever happening.
And I totally understand that us ladies can so bring on the drama, but seriously we aren't like that 24/7 and with all the women in our lives. This is why I always gravitate to what little positive female/female relationships that I can find. I'll be dreading the day when Morgana/Gwen aren't being all cute together.
Tara, Tara, Tara
Date: 2009-09-01 06:41 pm (UTC)I really don't know how to feel about these criticisms of Tara because yeah, she's smarter than that. But all too often they look at her as a tough, smart Black woman and forget that beneath all that she's actually very lonely and vulnerable. She doesn't get to be special like Sookie. She's just Tara Thornton. Then here comes somebody (first Maryann, then Eggs) who treats her like she's special, like she deserves good things in her life, and she's just supposed to drop them like that?
Human beings don't always work that way.
Re: Tara, Tara, Tara
Date: 2009-09-02 01:59 am (UTC)I can see why she would want to rescue Eggs. I like her and Eggs together, but rushing back to Gran's house without a plan to get him back was stupid. She was hysterical and not thinking clearly and her friends were right to hold her back. Eggs wasn't in immediate danger from Maryann, but by rushing back to Gran's house Tara put herself right back into a situation her friends and family had worked hard to get her out of.
I wanted Tara to be a part of taking herself out of the cycle of abuse she's been in, but when she had the opportunity she just thrust herself back into it (granted it was with noble intentions, but noble stupidity is still stupidity) again.
So, her actions don't mystify me, they just sadden me.

Date: 2009-09-01 07:58 am (UTC)I am loving the Queen so far. I have to admit I wasn't expecting much from ERW, but I was very impressed by her performance. Especially her comment about alpha males and Bill and Eric fucking (and her watching). I'm sure she made the slash fangirls piss themselves with excitement over that comment.
I felt so bad for Hoyt in this episode. His mother is a total cow, and how horrible it must have been for him to find out what really happened to his dad, especially like that. My heart went out for the poor boy. And don't even get me started on Jessica. It's not like she KILLED his mom for frik sake. She's new at this, ease up.
And as for that guy in the sink, at first glance I thought he was playing with dead fish. But no. I'm afraid those had to have been intestines from some unidentifiable source.

Date: 2009-09-02 02:03 am (UTC)Yeah, that's a great line. I loved the delivery on it too. He seemed so amused by himself for thinking that up.
I have to admit I wasn't expecting much from ERW, but I was very impressed by her performance.
I was expecting her to be pretty good, because she's been really good in everything I've seen her in. And it that first scene with her, I like "oh no, she's gonna suck". But she totally killed it after that scene. I've had my issues with Evan, but she always delivers while acting and I always look forward to seeing her on screen.
I felt so bad for Hoyt in this episode.
Yeah, this was a really brutal episode for him as well. I wish he hadn't stormed out on Jessica like that, but I DO understand why and respect his devotion to his mother. It's not his fault that she is completely undeserving of such an awesome son. This better not be the end of Jessica and Hoyt though. I hope he tears out of that house and heads straight over to Vampire Bill's to see Jessica.

Date: 2009-09-02 09:34 am (UTC)I second this. Loudly and enthusiastically. You can all keep your Beel and your Sookeh, I want me some Hoyt/Jessica. I shipped it from the very first glance across the room at Merlots. And Jessica better not die, because I don't hate her anymore and want her to stay undead.

Date: 2009-09-01 05:46 pm (UTC)I'm a huge fan of Evan Rachel Wood, but I wasn't really sure what to expect out of this. I really liked how she was able to convey "vampire" through a seemingly whimsical character. Though her character did little but give Bill information, I thought it was a good introduction to bring Sophie-Ann into the show. All the looks she makes with her faces... freakin' to die for.
And, of course, some Hadley love.

Date: 2009-09-02 02:07 am (UTC)This! I didn't have any preconcieved notions about the character because I haven't read the books, but I understand they've changed her attitude quite a bit. But, Evan portrayed what Alan Ball wanted expertly, and turned in a captivating performance. People panning her performance just because the writers changed the character is stupid. Say you don't like the changes made to the character, but don't infer that Evan can't act or did a bad job acting because that's just not true.
Though her character did little but give Bill information, I thought it was a good introduction to bring Sophie-Ann into the show. All the looks she makes with her faces... freakin' to die for.
Word. She was thoroughly entering in a role that was basically all exposition and yahtzee. I mean, considering that Sophie-Ann had very little to do, Evan made a really strong debut.
Also, sweet ass .gifs! Thanks for sharing :D

Date: 2009-09-02 06:02 pm (UTC)I didn't either, but I did read up on a quick series vs. books of what Sophie-Ann and Hadley's story was (which is tragic and full of angsty love, methinks) and they could still pull it off in a different way in the current series... but we'll see. Despite the queen having a different bearing, I like her all the same. Don't think I'll ever read the books though... it's bad enough watching Sookie, I don't think I could read about her either.
People panning her performance just because the writers changed the character is stupid.
This always baffles me! Contrary to apparently popular belief, actors and actresses don't really get that much control on what the character is. They're lucky if they do. They're hired and good at their jobs because they can listen to a director say "I want more of this or that" and deliver differently accordingly. Anyway, I can rant about that forever.
And some rowr!love.

Date: 2009-09-03 08:10 pm (UTC)lol! I don't really want to read the books either. I have electronic versions of them, but I'm really, really scared of the Urban Fantasy genre after reading the Hollows books (especially since K.H. is the cream of the crop in the genre and I find her shenanigans to be infuriating). The show is more than enough for me.
I also really liked the Queen and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. I mean, we've barely gotten to know her at all, so I find people shitting all over the character already to be crazy. It's like people LOATHED Jessica at first, and now she's almost universally loved. Give ERW and the Queen a chance.
This always baffles me! Contrary to apparently popular belief, actors and actresses don't really get that much control on what the character is.
Exactly. If you have a problem with the writing, say that the problem is with the writing. Don't bash the actor. I mean, calling ERW's acting amateurish and comparing it to high school theater is just ridiculous. If you don't like the idea of a Paris Hilton vampire Queen, fine. But ERW played a Paris Hilton vampire Queen well, so leave her acting alone.
no subject
Date: 2009-09-02 05:37 am (UTC)Same. I actually felt she was a bit off for the first few scenes and then it felt like she got more comfortable in Sophie-Anne's skin. I like ERW though, aside from he taste in men, so I'm excited to see her back again next season.
Almost like Sophie-Ann is putting on a show for people and so ERW's performance as Sophie is broader than she would usually play it.
THIS. I think that's why her performance (imo) came across as 'fake' in the beginning but it was simply because ERW seemed to be playing on that it's-all-about-appearances Hollywood-esque, glamour front.
Also, loved how Sophie-Ann is a total slash writer
lol that line was perfect, very Anya (from BtVS) of her
Also, Sophie-Ann feeding from both of Hadley's femoral arteries was hot.
Um, yeah! Every opening ep from now on needs to start that way, new female character each time, it doesn't even have to make sense it just needs to happen. lol The Hadley/Sophie-Anne relationship does intrigue me though.
Eric is always at his best when he and Pam on or screen together being snarky and fabulous.
AGREED. Just another reason why moar Pam would = moar win.
I still don't get all of the Eric swooning though.
Well, ASkars is hot as fuck but I don't think I could ship him with a human either and I really could care less about Sookeh and shipping her with anyone. If anything, Eric/Godric made way more sense than Eric/Sookie. And I agree, there needs to be more f/f interaction. Pam and Jessica could be fun and hilarious.
...wow, that was some rambling, sorry, I really need to just make recap posts of my own but I'm too lazy lol.
no subject
Date: 2009-09-03 08:25 pm (UTC)Yeah. I do think she was a little off at first, the first scene especially stood out for me, but by mid-episode she had hit her stride. And yes, ERWs taste in men does make me full body shudder, but I think she's a really good actress and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.
I think that's why her performance (imo) came across as 'fake' in the beginning but it was simply because ERW seemed to be playing on that it's-all-about-appearances Hollywood-esque, glamour front.
This is it exactly. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced this is the truth. Sophie-Ann wants to put forth a very deliberate image. Why this is we won't know until we more of the character, but she is consciously putting on an act, from the hair, and the clothes, and the patterns of speech, to the reading of the 50s era issue of vogue.
People are all, 'someone who acts like her could never be a vampire queen, she's not scary, she's stupid' etc., but how can you say that after one episode? We saw a few glimpses of steel in her in this episode, and she's clearly very smart and perceptive. If she's Queen, there's a reason. There's definitely more to her than what we saw in one episode, give her time.
Just another reason why moar Pam would = moar win.
There really does need to be moar Pam. The lack of Pam boggles my mind. EVERYONE loves Pam. I don't think I've encountered one person who didn't love Pam. They've given us so much more of other characters (who granted were liked), but Pam is possibly the side character people are clamoring for the most and we get so little of her.
MOAR PAM!
ASkars is hot as fuck but I don't think I could ship him with a human either and I really could care less about Sookeh and shipping her with anyone.
ASkars is clearly an attractive man, but I have no lust for him. He's kind of boring to me looks wise, so I can't get into the Eric/Sookie scenes because they showcase the 'sexiness' of ASkars. And since, Eric is a creepy motherfucker and a vicious killer, I can't get into Eric/Sookie scenes based on wanting them together either.
I like the character, I find him amusing as fuck most of the time (esp. when he's around Pam, and being all snarky, and funny and creepy), but I don't need moar of him.

I feel like Pam would find Rachel hella irritating and dislike her as much as she disliked Jessica or Arlene's children. She'd be all, "I hate her. She's so stupid." And then she'd mock Ivy. Damn, Pam and Sophie-Ann mocking Ivy together would be golden.
