Review of The Runaways

So. Good.
First of all, Dakota Fanning is amazing. Always. In everything. I own Push because of her. Push! And she owns this movie. Yes, it is a little uncomfortable watching her strut around in like a corset and garter, and to see people taking pictures of her crotch, but Cherie was 15/16 when all this was going on so feeling uncomfortable is a good thing. But, back to Dakota. Stunning, magnificent, wonderful. The change you see Cherie go through is heart-breaking, but expertly portrayed.
Second of all, KStew. Now, ya'll know I've been tough on KStew since the whole Twilight thing started, and honestly, justifiable so because she sucks in those movies. This movie however reminded me why I used to like Kristen. It has to be said that she's no Dakota Fanning, she didn't blow me out of the water, but she was good here, and really quite charismatic and moving in some scenes. The scene where she freaks out in the recording studio was really good.
And now the thing everyone cares about ... The Joan/Cherie plot-line.
Now, it's a true story so we all know they don't end up together, but watching their friendship (with benefits) grow was one of the best parts of the movie. KStew and Dakota have great chemistry together! The first time Joan saw Cherie looking through the open door of the women's washroom in the club and their eyes make contact in the mirror before Cherie saunters by her = me hooked. The scenes with the two of them together on screen were always riveting to watch, and often tons of fun. Joan was such a protective big bear of Cherie, I loved it. Joan wins Ivy Tamwood Award for being a super-awesome sort of girlfriend to a troubled drama queen (though I have to say, Cherie is much, much, much more sympathetic than Rachel Morgan). The way Joan gazed at Cherie and always found a way to touch her/snuggle up with her = AWWWWWxinfinity plus one.
Seriously, I'm girl-crushing on KStew real hard right now, it's freaking me out.
Also, it has to be admitted that the kiss scene is hot. There's honestly not much to it because of the anti-groping laws KStew had to abide by (lol) but the way it's filmed is just *moans* I was beginning to think that KStew was incapable to displaying human emotions let alone anything that resembled romantic attraction, but I take it back. She was great. The scene where Cherie tries on the corset for the first time was also amazing. Joan looked like she wanted to eat her up with a spoon. Also, the scene in the plane washroom was way hotter than it had any right to be.
Michael Shannon was great as Kim Fowley. The music was awesome. And the parts with the formation of the band and their early career were just tons of fun to watch. Later shit got heavy, but it was the good, captivating type of heavy.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians fans, if you watch the movie tell me if you don't think Lita Ford is exactly what Clarisse would be like! Lita was kind of a dick, but she was hot and her Clarisse-ian attitude endeared her to me.
And now it's time for me to spend the afternoon listening to the soundtrack while marking *sob* God, I hate working.

Date: 2010-03-21 09:04 pm (UTC)Also, KStew and Dakota in interviews together = ADORABLE!! Like, KStew is normally incredibly awkward (as in, I couldn't watch interviews of her because of second hand embarrassment), but she's so relaxed when she's with Dakota that the two of them are just plain awesome :)

Date: 2010-03-21 09:23 pm (UTC)lso, KStew and Dakota in interviews together = ADORABLE!!
I've been watching some of their interviews and I love them together. Dakota really seems to put KStew at ease. It's like KStew is still awkward and says "like" way too much, but its a charming sort of awkward instead of the painful to watch awkward.
Also, after seeing the interview where KStew talked about not being able to grope Dakota in the movie because she's underage, I was giggling a little during the Joan/Cherie sex montage because you could tell the director was totally trying to hide the fact that they couldn't really touch. So you get a lot of close-ups of their eyes and stuff which actually turned out to be pretty hot.
but she's so relaxed when she's with Dakota that the two of them are just plain awesome :)
This. I heart their friendship.

Date: 2010-03-21 09:57 pm (UTC)I'll be going in for Kristen, since she's my #1, but I like Dakota too, and DakotaStew? Equals hotness and awesomeness :)
I can't wait! Thanks for your review! And good luck with the marking :)

Date: 2010-03-22 12:30 am (UTC)I've been listening to the soundtrack on repeat :)
I needs to get my hands on that. I'm listening to some Joan Jett now, but I needs the soundtrack.
DakotaStew? Equals hotness and awesomeness :)
This. I love DakotaStew, so cute in their interviews and ridiculously hot here. KStew hasn't been my girl in a while, but she sure is now. Honestly, I'm crazy crushing on her right now.
And good luck with the marking :)
Thanks! I brought it on myself by putting it off for so long, but it sucks oh how it sucks.

Date: 2010-03-21 10:15 pm (UTC)Also also, agree with Lita being Clarisse, and the actress who plays her screams lesbian to me (there was a video of her where she showed you her trailer, and when she showed us her TV she was all, "I've been so obsessed with watching season 2 of the L word, and I'm about to start season 3!"). Definitely Clarisse :P

Date: 2010-03-22 12:55 am (UTC)*sigh* I wish Jane and Bella WOULD kiss in Eclipse. It would give me a legit excuse to see the movie, plus it would be extra hot cause Jane is evil and likes pain, and Legend of the Seeker has taught me that is sexy sexy sexy *waves at Cara and Denna*.

I still can't believe that's actually Dakota singing in there - kind of mind blowing since it doesn't annoy the crap out of me
I couldn't stand dakota fanning when she was younger - don't ask why because I have no freaking clue why. I used to think it was because of Uptown girls, but I kinda like that movie now that I've seen it on tv...

Date: 2010-03-22 12:49 am (UTC)So had I! It's awesome. Dakota's so fierce.
I still can't believe that's actually Dakota singing in there
I know. As if I wasn't impressed enough by her, she has to go and be extra awesome.
I couldn't stand dakota fanning when she was younger
She creeped me out for a while when she was younger, and I remember being anti-Dakota for a while, but she won be over by making Push not only watchable but ownable. And ever since Push I've thought she's awesome.

Date: 2010-03-22 01:02 am (UTC)20 days? Groce. Oh well, at least when you do see it you can rest assured that you will enjoy it.
Urgh God I've been dying for this movie since it was announced.
I thought it was going to be lulzy when it was first announced because KStew got cast right after I saw Twilight and therefore couldn't take anything she was a part of seriously. I'm glad that I my initial skepticism was misplaced.
Now after all of this raving I really hope you do like it when you see it!
P.S. Your icon = unf!

Date: 2010-03-22 01:13 am (UTC)Ooh, ouch. I hope the move went well and that your back has recovered.
let me know if you haven't read it yet
I still haven't.
If I was beginning to really dislike Rachel and Cock-Block in the last book, this time it's total, full-on rage and hatred.
*sigh* It's really amazing how Kim has managed to assassinate her main character. And it's even more heartbreaking because Rachel was tolerable at the beginning of the book only to spiral so far down hill a few more chapters in.
Ivy is too good for that selfish cock-blocked Mary Sue.
I know. Honestly, the longer the series goes on the more I find myself feeling like Rachel doesn't deserve Ivy. Rachel is just so fucking selfish and self-centered that I feel like she'd just continue to be a dick to Ivy even if they got together.
More than ever I just want Ivy to meet a nice lady and move away, far, far away from Rachel and all of her self-created drama and bullshit. Rachel's such a toxic friend.
From so much promise, to so much fail!
I know. I feel the way about this series as I do about Whitney Houston. I used to have so much love and now I'm just heartbroken.

Date: 2010-03-23 03:26 am (UTC)Yeah, the whole Twilight thing kinda ruined her for me as well but then I remember Panic Room and the fact that (with the proper cast) she can act so she stopped being annoyed and starts to be kinda hot.
I don't think they will release this movie on my city, sadly. But I'm pretty sure I'll get my hands on it at some point. KStew is not really my fav person right now though but your review give me hope. Besides Dakota. She was like the only good thing on that Heroes movie.

Date: 2010-03-24 12:14 am (UTC)Twilight really did ruin her. It's so long ago, but I actually remember hearing about Twilight because KStew was cast as Bella, and I thought "well, if it's got someone decent like Kristen in it, it can't be too bad". Oh lord, how wrong I was.
But I'm pretty sure I'll get my hands on it at some point.
The internet always provides, lol.

Dakota is amazing, and yes she totally was the best thing about "Push". KStew is good in this too, she won't knock your socks off like Dakota does, but it made my distaste for her lessen, and made me find her kind of attractive again.
