Legend of the Seeker - 2x22 - Tears
May. 23rd, 2010 12:35 amWell, I probably would have really liked that episode if it wasn't possibly the last one of the series. There was a lot of cool, amazing, awesome badassery in it, but there was also some serious "What is this? I don't even".
Let's start with ...
THE BAD
1. Zedd doing the 'unbreaking spell' on Dahlia didn't enrage me as much as it has enraged others, but I certainly didn't like it. It seemed like a really lazy and insulting way to wrap up a storyline from a useless episode that shouldn't even have been made in the first place.
Sacrificing Cara's development and an insight into Cara's past and what/who helped make Cara who she was to wrap up a storyline from a fucking AU episode that added nothing to anything, is just UGH!
Mostly, it just left me feeling like I was wrong to give the writers any credit whatsoever for "Eternity" and the Cara/Dahlia relationship. It has become clear to me now that like 90% of the awesome of "Eternity" was due to Tab and Laura Brent bringing their "A" games and adding a ton of emotion between Cara/Dahlia that the writers probably didn't intend, but were perfectly happy to let stand once they saw it onscreen.
2. Kahlan's tears save the world? Um, I love me some Kahlan Amnell, in fact I love me a lot of Kahlan Amnell, but ... UGH! Seriously. I know it plays into that whole "As long as the Mother Confessor's pure heart beats the Keeper cannot win" prophecy, but still. It seemed like a really cheap way to wrap up a season long arc in like 4 minutes.
THE GOOD
1. CARA! I loved so much about Cara in this episode. Her suspicious looks at Zedd when he was so happy to see her amused the hell out of me.
HER EPIC GIRL!LOVE FOR KAHLAN WAS GREAT! Cara was reluctant to fight! CARA. WAS RELUCTANT TO FIGHT because she didn't want to hurt Kahlan! The way she looked to Zedd for help because she really didn't want to have to genuinely fight Kahlan made me swoon a little. And then of course, Cara's inability to shoot Kahlan because she was afraid that she wouldn't be able to bring her back with the breath of life. D'awwwwwww x infinity plus one.
Cara: Who's in charge here?
Garren: I am.
*Cara's bitch slaps her*
Cara: Who's in charge here?
Garren: You are.
SWOON x forever plus a day! OMG CARA YOU FABULOUS BITCH! This scene made me tear up because after I was done clapping and celebrating Cara's awesomeness, I realized that I would never again get to witness new acts of badassery from Cara fucking Mason the Queen of everything. *sob*
Also, for some reason Zedd and Cara ducking down behind the roof when Con Dar!Kahlan looked over at them really cracked me up.
2. KAHLAN! I honestly found sub!Kahlan to be ridiculously amazingly panty dampeningly hot. I feel kind of bad about how much Kahlan differing to Nicci turned me on. Bridget Regan, my god you are amazing. *bows down* We are not worthy. The things that woman can convey with her eyes are just *swoons* I can't even really type about this more because every time I think about sub!Kahlan my mind wanders to very very pleasing places.
And Con Dar!Kahlan is fucking scary and awesome. I loved seeing Kahlan go all Con Dar and VENGEFUL again. I should probably be worried about how attractive I find Kahlan when she is stabbing the shit out of people, but I'm not because it's Kahlan/Bridget and she's amazing.
3. I did like that Kahlan and Richard realized that he can't be confessed because of his epic love for her. But it honestly didn't have the impact that it should have because they shoved it into the last 10 seconds of the show and it had to be narrated by Zedd (like far too many things in the episode. The episode should have been called, "Zedd explains things because we tried to cram too much into 44 minutes".)
Also, it was really bittersweet for me, seeing Cara standing off to the side on her own (and not because I'm C/K shipper, but because her love, her chance for happiness had just been wiped out of existence 40 minutes before). It's nice that at least its canon now that K/R can like legit get it on, and K/R shippers have probs been waiting for this for a while, but it was really rushed, and I felt badly for Cara.
4. Nicci was amazing. I love the costuming department and their appreciation for showing off long, lean, fabulous legs. Even though Nicci was all evil and shit she was fun to watch, and she werked that glam!rock outfit. I have to say I felt really fucking bad for Nicci at the end of the episode. I don't even want to imagine what EVIL shit Darken Rahl is going to do to her. Like think about what he did to Cara and he LIKED Cara. *shudder*
Now, I'm probably missing out a bunch of things, but I probably need to rewatch before I can think about things clearly. Again, as a season finale this would have made me really happy (except for point #1 under "The Bad" behind the cut), but as a series finale it's just left me feeling really sad and unfulfilled because there is so much more story to tell.
I DON'T WANT THIS SHOW TO END! *bawls like a baby*

Date: 2010-05-23 05:21 am (UTC)I agree with you on the Dahlia mutilation lol For me it wasnt so much offensive because they basically wiped out Dahlia and implied that this woman (whom we know little about - hell all of Cara's sultry looks might've had less to do with epic love and more to do with her "A" game to get laid.... I assume Mord Sith are not accustomed to going without sex for long periods of time. Cara must be suffering muchly lol)... what was really offensive was the shoddy writing.
I mean for an unpredictable spell, we now have one predicating factor: if you are Mord Sith and this spell is used on you, you will cease to be Mord Sith. I have no idea WHY it singles out the Mord Sith aspect of their lives but its just so damn efficient about it lol
This season... way too many filler episodes. They rushed that ending so badly. Magic became the cure for everything. Or rather: Magical Love of Epic Win lol
I hope one day a lovely woman will fall in love with Cara. And then she too can grow a Stone of Tears on Cara's boobs sometime. Then she too will have Magical Love of Epic Win.
lmao
Also, I totally loved all the parts you loved :D
I demand a Cara Mason spin off!!!

Date: 2010-05-23 06:30 am (UTC)oy. there were so many better ways they could have dealt with Dahlia and Cara in the last two episodes, and so many better ways to really give this one an emotional payoff that didn't need to be narrated. But as long as I remind myself that I watch this show for the crack and the asskicking women, I'm pretty happy with it. And to (possibly) give some of the writers their due, maybe the last two episodes were written by different writers than Eternity was? I haven't checked, but I've noticed that some writers have much more affinity for femslash and subtext than others. So maybe it wasn't ALL unintentional?
but ultimately what matters to me right now is that I LOVE CARA AND KAHLAN AND I DON"T CARE WHO FRAKKING KNOWS! I will be forever happy that this show introduced me to Tabrett Bethell and Bridget Regan and allowed me to watch them be such awesome characters every week.

Date: 2010-05-23 06:38 am (UTC)So true! That what made me so interested in the pairing. It was a bit disappointing to see their relationship wiped out.
About writing: I am definitely not watching this show for the plot, and doubt that anybody does, throughout the series at some points I was laughing out loud at ridiculousness of the plot, so it is not surprising how they wrapped the season.
But I am going to miss all the good about his show: actors, fights, hair!fights and cleavage shots, ridiculous slow motion, badass characters of both genders
And Cara, I am really going to miss her *tears*
Please write something with happy!Cara

Pretty much sums up the whole season for me, and as I haven't warted season 1 yet, applies to the whole show as well. I was cracking up, thinking of your reaction at that scene.

I feel like a bad fan because I didn't notice this plot point AT ALL until I came online. I guess I was too busy giggling over the idea of Dahlia in some forest somewhere all 'would somebody untie me from this FUCKING TREE!'. That and I was too busy wondering why Zedd would do the spell on Dahlia rather than, you know, letting Kahlan confess Dahlia and have Dahlia PERFORM THE BREATH OF LIFE ON CARA.
Kahlan's tears save the world?
Yeah, that was very.. um, twee? Plus, we got jipped on seeing Cara give KAHLAN the breath of life.
I honestly found sub!Kahlan to be ridiculously amazingly panty dampeningly hot.
Dude, remember when Kahlan was all subby and demure in Torn? It was like that but a gagillion times hotter! It's so sad we'll never get the ep with dom!Cara and sub!Kahlan. Also, if I were the type of person who shipped Cara/Kahlan/Richard I would question whether it was *just* Kahlan's tears that revived Richard but the combination of Cara *and* Kahlan.
I really have nothing to add to what you've said about Cara. 'Cuz, like, if Kahlan doesn't want to have a million of Cara's babies, I'm totally up for the job!

I just want to quote this because it was just that awesome. Best part of the episode, hands down.
I really liked this episode and thought it had no weak moments. Zedd saying just about anything made me cringe but then again I have a very high tolerance for cheese. It's just how his character is written and I'm not a hater. He's the exposition machine.
Yep, talking about cheese. How the whole thing ended... tolerance: I have it. Although I too have limits and the whole thing went really close to them.
I agree they totally wasted the previous episode and Dahlia/Cara storyline but I can even ignore that and be oblivious.
What I can't ignore is if this show really ends. :(
btw Bridget told she's read some of the Cara/Kahlan femslash. But which ones?

Date: 2010-05-23 10:06 am (UTC)OMG, the look on Cara's face when Zedd was all happy to see her. Again Tab is a Goddess!
Kahlan is so hot!! on yeah and Con Kahlan, hot hot hot!!
Bridget is amazing, between her and Tab, we need no one else.
Love Cara's hesitation (yeah, it's sweet how much she care for Kahlan)
I felt that *thump* for Cara when she stood on the side and watch Kahlan with Richard. And now I'm gonna go curl up and die.

Date: 2010-05-23 10:15 am (UTC)And seriously, Zedd....arrogant much? I know he meant well but geezus, he sure had a one track mind on getting back the Cara that *he* wanted, he didn't care whose lives he potentially messed with. And how convenient is it that he got exactly what he wanted, with all of them unchanged? Zedd, how about undoing the part where you, Kahlan, and Richard bullied Cara into going with Dahlia which started all this mess in the first place, asshole.
Ahem sorry, got carried away. :D
Ok, C/D murder aside, I did like the episode. For one, and I'm just being objective here, doing the spell on Dahlia instead of confessing her made sense, and at least it meant darling Dahlia is still alive somewhere although I won't be surprised if she ends up already dead in the new AU world, what with Zedd's legendary cockblocking skills. Two, confessed Kahlan was precious, I just wanted to pinch her cheeks. Three, Nicci was scorchin' hot. Four, Con Dar Kahlan was magnificent. Five, CARA (you've mentioned all of them!). Six, Richard was stabbed through the heart.
The episode ended right there for me. Lolz.

Couldn't agree more. I don't understand at all the point of the previous apisode. They could've used that time to make the finale less rushed and even more amazing. What the hell was wrong with the idea of them just unbreaking Cara with looooove? I would like to introduce the person who came up with the idea for 'Unbroken' to ConDar!Kahlan, who's been confessed by Cara... Oh my...
Cara and Kahlan made this episode. Richard was once again being the douche he tends to be and the ladies had to save the world with their awesome. I am so watching Cara's bitch slap on repeat. And Kahlan, and Cara's girl!love... These two just simply rule the universe. At least I think they should.

.. what was really offensive was the shoddy writing.
I agree so much. I honestly never expected Cara/Dahlia to have a happy ending, and I'm sure the writing staff never imagined that a certain segment of the audience would epicize (made up word, but you know what I mean) Cara/Dahlia to levels that we did. She was a sexy plot point, but I just wish she was a plot point that could have been cleaned up well when she was no longer useful. It's like, "Writers, but your toys away safely after you're finished playing with them, m'kay?"
if you are Mord Sith and this spell is used on you, you will cease to be Mord Sith. I have no idea WHY it singles out the Mord Sith aspect of their lives but its just so damn efficient about it lol
Well, I guess it makes sense it that it undoes whatever 'broke' them the most in their lives, which had to have been their Mord'Sith training. For people other than Mord'Sith it probably be different, like the death of a loved one gets unerased or something.
I honestly just hated the whole concept of the spell, thought the AU episode was a waste of time, and didn't like the idea that the AUisode could have been about the gang (read: Kahlan) healing Cara with love. Or at the very least, the episode would have been better if Zedd could have just removed the super-agiels effects and we could have had some hurt/comfort moments while they started towards the pillars of creation, so that the finale didn't have to be so crammed. *sigh*
Magic became the cure for everything. Or rather: Magical Love of Epic Win lol
LOL! Ugh. The Magical Love of Epic Win was so lame, so incredible lame. I nearly rolled by eyes out of head when I realized what was happening.
I demand a Cara Mason spin off!!!
I would watch religiously.

Date: 2010-05-23 03:33 pm (UTC)It didn't make sense for me because they were already in an alternate universe where Cara never became a Mord'Sith. Performing the spell on Dahlia *should* have sent them to a universe where *neither* Cara and Dahlia became Mord'Sith's, because Cara becoming a Mord'Sith never happened. Know what I mean? And then there's the thing where undoing Dahlia becoming MS doesn't send Zedd to the 'original' universe so much as another alt-verse. It's like Sliders but with POWERFUL MAGIC instead of wormholes.
Zedd, how about undoing the part where you, Kahlan, and Richard bullied Cara into going with Dahlia which started all this mess in the first place, asshole.
Heh, seriously.

Date: 2010-05-23 03:34 pm (UTC)This. I was honestly squeeing, and 'awwwww shit'ing throughout the whole episode. There was a lot of badass and awesome floating around that episode. I think mostly, what people are really disappointed about is that the show is now over. I don't think that it was possible for this episode to leave people with a completely good/happy feeling, simply because it's the end (way before it's time). But it was a pretty kickass episode.
And really, Kahlan in ConDar has absolutely no right to be as hot/awesome as it is ;),/i>
I know! She's terrifying but it is some incredible arousing that I don't even. RAWR.

Date: 2010-05-23 03:43 pm (UTC)This, which is why I think I completely enjoyed the episode while watching it, because it was really all about Kahlan, Cara and Nicci being completely badass.
It was only at the end when I saw Cara all on her own, that I started thinking about the shitty resolution to the Dahlia storyline.
Mostly it's not the ep. I had a problem with, I'm just really depressed that the show is over.
And to (possibly) give some of the writers their due, maybe the last two episodes were written by different writers than Eternity was?
TBH I'm probably being too hard on the writing staff. Dahlia was a plot point. Really she was, she was created to get Cara into Darken Rahl's hands in a believable way. I'm sure the writing staff never imagined that a certain segment of the audience would epicize (made up word, but you know what I mean) Cara/Dahlia to levels that we did. The last episodes were written and filmed a long time ago so there was no way they could have known how much people loved Cara/Dahlia together, and if there'd been a third season we probably would have seen Dahlia pop up again, but I doubt that the writers actually had any plans to make Cara/Dahlia an epic romance.
Because honestly, this last episode was actually full of f/f subtext, it just wasn't C/D. Kahlan/Nicci was incredibly gay, and Cara's everything when it came to Kahlan was incredibly gay as well.
The writers didn't forget about f/f subtext, Dahlia was just no longer useful to them.
what matters to me right now is that I LOVE CARA AND KAHLAN AND I DON"T CARE WHO FRAKKING KNOWS! I will be forever happy that this show introduced me to Tabrett Bethell and Bridget Regan and allowed me to watch them be such awesome characters every week.
Word to everything in this paragraph. In the end, I wanted the Cara/Kahlan bond to be solid and moving, and it was. And this show has brought me so much joy and introduced me to two amazing new actresses that I hope to see a lot from. It was an extremely enjoyable ride.

Date: 2010-05-23 03:53 pm (UTC)I wish the C/D thing had been handled differently, but I think we should have seen it coming. We just wanted it to be this amazing romance so badly. Really Dahlia was a plot point created to get Cara into Darken Rahl's hands in a believable way. I'm sure the writing staff never imagined that a certain segment of the audience would epicize (made up word, but you know what I mean) Cara/Dahlia to levels that we did. This is so true. I LOVE this show, but the writing has often been very cracky and WTF. They did a lot of things right with this show, but tight, coherent plots were often not two of those things, lol.
But I am going to miss all the good about his show: actors, fights, hair!fights and cleavage shots, ridiculous slow motion, badass characters of both genders. And Cara, I am really going to miss her *tears*
This was the stuff they did really well, and I'm going to miss it so much. And yes, Cara. I think more than anything else I'm going to miss Cara. God, she was an amazing character and just brilliantly acted.
Please write something with happy!Cara
Do you mean Cara as she was at the end of this episode, having feelings and being kind of okay with it. Or happyverse!Cara, because the happy!verse is pretty much dead to me now, which sucks because I had been planning on ficcing it more *sigh*

Date: 2010-05-23 03:55 pm (UTC)season 2 honestly DOES pwn season 2 like Cara pwned Garren. I liked season 1, but I wasn't fanatic about it like I've been about season 2. Cara shot the show to a new level of awesome.
I was cracking up, thinking of your reaction at that scene.
That scene was beautiful. I got a little teary eyed. I love the writers for putting that in there. I felt like pulling a Zedd and saying, "That's the Cara I know!" HBIC!

Date: 2010-05-23 04:10 pm (UTC)Cynicism: I wish the C/D thing had been handled differently, but I think we should have seen it coming. We just wanted it to be this amazing romance so badly.

And 21 comes across as even a BIGGER waste of time considering everything that was crammed into the last ep.
THIS enrages me. 21 was useless pile of steaming crap that added nothing to anything, and I am livid that the second last episode EVER of Legend of the Seeker was wasted on it. 22 should have been spread out into two episodes and really let the show go out with a bang. Even not knowing that the show was going to be canceled, 21 just never needed to exist.
I was too busy wondering why Zedd would do the spell on Dahlia rather than, you know, letting Kahlan confess Dahlia and have Dahlia PERFORM THE BREATH OF LIFE ON CARA.
because Zedd is the biggest Cock-Blocker in history next to Kim Harrison.
Actually, if there was going to be a third season I think we all would have been happy that the spell was performed on Dahlia because it means she's alive in the real!verse and that it could have been conceivable for there to be a C/D plot line in the third season.
As we know the show is over, now we just wanted one last sweetass visual of C/D, but it was probably the writers actually throwing a bone and saying, "There could be more C/D so don't get your panties in a bunch."
Plus, we got jipped on seeing Cara give KAHLAN the breath of life.
This pisses me off, because imagine what the .gifers and photoshoppers like you could have done with a shot like that!!!!! After kahlan suggesting it SO MANY times, for the show to end without it happening is just a slap to the face. Richard hogs the breath of life SO MUCH. Let Kahlan have a turn! Stop bogarting the breath of life Richard!
It was like that but a gagillion times hotter!
seriously! The way Bridget's eyes followed her so adoringly. UNF UNF UNF!
It's so sad we'll never get the ep with dom!Cara and sub!Kahlan.
*SOBS* I know. Like, I don't think that I would have really liked an ep where Kahlan was forced to sub to Cara. But an ep where Kahlan was pretending to for some undercover shit, would have been epic, epic. Because of the visual of Kahlan like on the floor while Cara pets her hair, and then like where they're behind closed doors we would have seen epic friendship moments of Kahlan teasing Cara about enjoying topping her just a little to much and Cara smirking sexily. *SOBS HARDER*
'Cuz, like, if Kahlan doesn't want to have a million of Cara's babies, I'm totally up for the job!
I know! Cara would get so much ass thrown at her in the real world. she and Ivy Tamwood could have a P.I.M.P contest (but I think Cara would win because she's less angsty, and honestly what the hell has Kim Harrison done that a MORD'SITH is LESS ANGSTY than her creation?!?!?!?!)

Date: 2010-05-23 04:17 pm (UTC)Hands down. It really was. I LOVED that moment. Cara is HBIC and I liked that they showcased that so amazingly in the last ep.
tolerance: I have it. Although I too have limits and the whole thing went really close to them.
Heh! So true. It's like, "show, I'll give you a lot of leeway, but that was almost too much."
I agree they totally wasted the previous episode and Dahlia/Cara storyline but I can even ignore that and be oblivious.
TBH I'm not going to dwell on that too much anymore, because now that I've calmed down and am thinking more rationally I realize that Dahlia was a plot point. She was created to get Cara into Darken Rahl's hands in a believable way and the writing staff never would have imagined that a certain segment of the audience would turn C/D into this epic romance. We femslashers are just so starved for well-written F/F relationships, that we just invested too much into C/D after one episode.
What I can't ignore is if this show really ends. :(
I know! The thought is making me so sad. I'm still in many ways operating in a state of denial. I don't want to believe it's over.
btw Bridget told she's read some of the Cara/Kahlan femslash. But which ones?
Heh. I wonder ... Hopefully none with really inappropriate uses of Cara's agiels!

Date: 2010-05-23 04:28 pm (UTC)We just wanted it to be this amazing romance so badly <....> writing staff never imagined that a certain segment of the audience would epicize (made up word, but you know what I mean) Cara/Dahlia to levels that we did.
Totally, and we tend to do this ever so often. I really need to grow a thicker skin with the course most lgbt characters and stories handled on screen.
On fiction. I'd love to read anything from you really. I am just not ready to let go of this fandom.

Date: 2010-05-23 04:32 pm (UTC)the only good thing about spelling Dahlia is that it means she's still alive in the verse the show ended in, which means in my mind Cara can meet up with her again and fall in love with her and they could conceivably have a happy ending together.
I'd like to think that having Dahlia alive in the verse they ended in was the writers setting up a C/D storyline for season 3.
OMG, the look on Cara's face when Zedd was all happy to see her. Again Tab is a Goddess!
So true. She can convey so much with her expressions. I LOVE IT.
Bridget is amazing, between her and Tab, we need no one else.
the two of them are powerhouses! It's so true. the show really could have been all about Cara and Kahlan all the time and I would have been just fine with that.
Love Cara's hesitation (yeah, it's sweet how much she care for Kahlan)
It was a beautiful moment, as was her admission of why she hesitated later.
I felt that *thump* for Cara when she stood on the side and watch Kahlan with Richard.
Me too. She looked so sad. She wanted a hug from her girlfriend too!

Date: 2010-05-23 04:40 pm (UTC)You know, until you wrote this I had almost convinced myself that the spell on Dahlia made sense, but you're right, it was dumb, dumb, dumb. Still, I can't completely hate because in this new!same verse at least Dahlia is alive out there somewhere and could encounter Cara again.
It's like Sliders but with POWERFUL MAGIC instead of wormholes.
Heh. Oh, Sliders.

Date: 2010-05-23 04:47 pm (UTC)I tend to think she would have reacted the same way. When Cara hooked up with them she was a stone cold bitch. Her relationship with Dahlia didn't leave any sort of soft spot in Mord'Sith Cara's heart except for Dahlia. Kahlan earned Cara's love and respect and I think she still would have earned it even in a world without Dahlia being a Mord'Sith.
Zedd, how about undoing the part where you, Kahlan, and Richard bullied Cara into going with Dahlia which started all this mess in the first place, asshole.
IKR! I don't understand how it was somehow easier to undo 15 years of life or whatnot, instead of just undoing like the last 5 days. Seriously, just add a few more words into the incantation Zedd.
and at least it meant darling Dahlia is still alive somewhere
this is the reason I'm not hating on the spell completely. I like to imagine that it was the writers way of leaving the door open for C/D in season 3.
Two, confessed Kahlan was precious, I just wanted to pinch her cheeks. Three, Nicci was scorchin' hot. Four, Con Dar Kahlan was magnificent. Five, CARA (you've mentioned all of them!). Six, Richard was stabbed through the heart.
All of this! Just ALL. OF. THIS.
There really was a lot to like in this episode. I'm just bitter that the show is over TBH. No episode would have satisfied me completely.

Date: 2010-05-23 04:49 pm (UTC)No, you were paying attention unlike the writers. the only thing I can fanwank is that because they were doing violence it helped fight off the effects for a while. but that's some fanwanking bullshit right there.
I can't hate completely though, because it was a cool-ass scene. the writers know we'll overlook these things if they make the chicks kick ass enough.
