****************************

Nadia stared out at the shimmering dark waves, moonlight glittering off of the glossy surface as it shifted and churned gently, the movement of the water almost hypnotic. Almost enough to make her forget about the horrible ache gnawing at her insides, squeezing at her heart like an iron fist, making her breath shallow and her eyes red.

She leaned forward drawing her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them protectively, hugging herself desperately trying to find some kind of solace against the tumultuous emotions swirling around inside of her.

She closed her eyes and could hear Sydney’s voice. Her breathing weak, and her voice shaky as she tried bravely to hide how scared she was, failing utterly and completely. She squeezed her eyes shut more tightly, willing herself not to cry, not to let one tear leak from her eyes because if she started she knew from previous experience that she wouldn’t be able to stop. When Sydney’s voice had become so soft it was barely a whisper and she had started repeating herself, the lack of oxygen making it impossible for her to concentrate on anything for more than a few seconds, Nadia had felt her heart constrict powerfully, almost grasping at her own heart. She had felt like she was dying too.

She understood Sydney’s protectiveness of her in a way she never had before. Finally having been the worrier, the one anxiously waiting around to see if her sister would pull through, Nadia understood the irrationality but the inevitability of wanting to protect her sister from the dangers of the world. It made her feel closer to her Sydney, and that warmed her inside, made her heart feel as if it were glowing like a string of Christmas lights lay around it.

But it also terrified her.

She knew that she loved Sydney, that she cared about her far more than perhaps was normal or even legal, but she hadn’t fully realized what it meant to love her that much until the day before. She hadn’t realized how much a love that strong could hurt.

Nadia gasped, turning her head sharply when she felt something brush against her shoulder.

“It’s just me.” She couldn’t see her sister, but she recognized her voice immediately. “Couldn’t sleep either?” Sydney continued dropping down onto the ground next to Nadia, folding her legs up under her. It was a statement not a question.

Nadia shook her head, her eyes dropping down into her lap for a moment before she looked over at Sydney. She feel tears welling up in her eyes again as she looked at sister and willed herself to hold them back. “I felt sick,” Nadia breathed out, her eyes shimmering with as yet unshed tears. “I could barely breathe, when you … I was so scared,” she trailed off blinking, a few tears escaping from her eyes as she did.

Sydney shifted closer to Nadia when she saw a tear escape from her eyes, drawing her arm around her sister’s shoulder, tugging her towards her, encouraging her to lean her head on her shoulder. Nadia resisted at first, and then relaxed, seeming to fold into her as she twisted her body towards Sydney’s and buried her face in her neck. Sydney stroked her hair, remembering the last time Nadia had cried against her like that, how she had been the one sick with worry that time, how it had been a revelation for her just to be able to touch Nadia, to confirm to herself that she was alive, and safe. She understood that her sister needed that now, and truthfully she needed it to. Being alone in the dark wasn’t exactly something that she was yearning for at the moment, and the warmth and sweetness of Nadia’s body against hers was just the thing she needed to chase away the nightmares.

“How do you do this?” Nadia asked as she settled down, tears no longer streaming down her face, pulling her head away from Sydney’s neck, but leaving her head resting on her shoulder, enjoying the half embrace they were in.

“You don’t have a choice,” Sydney replied simply, turning her head to look down at Nadia’s head where it rested, then dipping her head down to place a kiss against her sister’s forehead. She knew what Nadia was talking about, she had talked to her about Danny, and Francie and Will, and Vaughn after her two-year absence. About how she seemed to hurt, destroy or lose every person that she cared about, about how the one person in the world who claimed to love her most constantly lied to her and hurt her. Nadia, she knew, had spent most of her life trying not to make connections, trying to remain as independent and strong as possible because in her life, how she lived, vulnerability and weakness were things that could have killed her. And now she was wondering – as everybody did before they finally accepted the inevitability of it – why anyone would bother loving someone else, if it hurt that much. Yet even as she answered her sister’s question, she felt Nadia wrap her arm around her waist, snuggling closer to her, and she knew that her sister already knew the answer to her question, and had already accepted it.

Nadia lifted her head from Sydney’s shoulder, she had been enjoying the silence that had descended upon them after Sydney last spoke, but she wanted to see her sister’s face, she needed to look at her.

She stared at Sydney’s profile for a long moment as her sister stared out at the water, her features calm and peaceful as the moonlight gently danced against her smooth skin. She was mesmerized by the sight, by her beauty, Sydney, sitting regally in the sand like some ancient goddess blessed by the moon, her skin as flawless as marble. She wanted to touch her, suddenly seized by the need to make sure that someone so perfect and lovely could be real.

Nadia leaned forward, intending to kiss Sydney on the cheek, but as she turned towards Sydney, Sydney turned her head to face her and Nadia’s lips ended up pressed against Sydney’s.

They froze for a moment, both of them tensing as their lips rested against each other, creating an intimate tableau. And then Nadia moved, breaking the spell, pressing her lips against Sydney’s more firmly while bringing her hand up to cup her sister’s face gently.

And then she was pulling back, her hand falling from Sydney’s as she realized what she was doing and that Sydney, while not making a move to stop her, wasn’t responding to her touch either.

“I …” Nadia started forcing herself to look at Sydney, who was staring at her with big, watery green eyes. She faltered however after that first word, not sure how one went about explaining away kissing their sister, not sure that it could be explained away.

“Don’t,” Sydney said suddenly, stopping the apology she knew Nadia was going to make. For some reason she couldn’t bear the thought of Nadia trying to explain the gentle touch away, the idea that the Argentine might tell her to forget it, or that it didn’t mean anything breaking her heart. She didn’t want an apology, and she didn’t want to forget it.

Sydney extended her hand towards her sister, cupping her chin in her hand for a moment, simply looking at her, before she slowly leaned forward her eyes never leaving Nadia’s until her lips finally pressed tentatively against sisters. She kept the contact light for a moment, and then allowed the contact to become firmer, yet still chaste, almost exactly as Nadia had kissed her moments before.

She heard Nadia sigh into the kiss, and felt her relax, her body almost slumping as the tension that had come into it moments before dissipated.

“It’s late Nadia,” Sydney said when she finally pulled away from sister’s lips, her eyes tracking up to look at the star lit sky before returning to her sister.

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep,” Nadia replied, her voice unfocused and fuzzy as she looked at Sydney shyly yet somewhat dreamily.

“I’ll be right beside you,” Sydney replied uncrossing her legs and standing up, reaching down a second later offering her hand to Nadia. Nadia wrapped her fingers around Sydney’s a second later and allowed her sister to pull her to her feet. “We’ll keep each others nightmares away,” Sydney continued once Nadia was upright, warming at the smile that came to Nadia’s face at her words.

She allowed their hands to drop down so that they were snuggled in between their bodies, their fingers intertwined as they headed up the beach towards the path that would lead them back home.
