Nadia sighed deeply, momentarily rooted in place as she looked into the kitchen her eyes following Sydney as her sister scrubbed at the sink viciously, attacking it like it had tried to invade a small sovereign nation. This was the second time she had come across Sydney cleaning the sink in as many days, and just as Sydney had realized that her obsessive running weeks ago had nothing to do with wanting to lose a few pounds, she knew that whatever it was Sydney was trying to wash away couldn’t be accomplished with Javex and elbow grease.

Making her way over to Sydney, noticing that the other woman didn’t seem to even be aware of her presence, Nadia gently lay her hand on Sydney’s shoulder feeling her tense and twitch slightly, obviously surprised by the touch. Sydney was still for a moment, but then relaxed under Nadia’s hand, dropping the sponge that she had been holding back into the sink before slowly turning around to face her sister.

“It’ll definitely think twice before getting dirty again,” Nadia commented softly, her eyes drifting over to the gleaming sink Sydney had just been hunched over. “Why don’t you take a little break?” she suggested looking back over at Syd.

Nadia drew her legs up underneath her body, facing forward looking out into the living room staring at the fireplace. Sydney had agreed to her suggestion without a fuss, nodding obediently before removing the rubber gloves she had been wearing. However, she’d remained fairly silent, seemingly lost in thought as they made their way over to the couch, leaving Nadia wondering where and how to begin. She’d never been particularly good at emotional chats, probably due to lack of practice, though she seemed to be more than making up for lost time lately.

“I should’ve told you that I was going to see her. I know that, I just …” Nadia started, deciding to just get to the point and address the issue she thought was bothering Sydney.

“Don’t, it’s alright,” Sydney cut in before Nadia could finish finally turning her head to the side to look at her sister. “I’m not upset about you going to see Katya,” she continued once Nadia had looked over at her as well. “I mean I understand … why, you did. It doesn’t … it doesn’t make her anymore trustworthy or less dangerous, but I understand the desire to talk to her.”

Nadia held her gaze for a moment after that before finally allowing it to drop to her lap, lifting her head a few seconds later to stare back out into the living room. She could tell that Sydney still wished she had never gone near Katya and was quite certain that in one way or another she was upset about it. But she believed that Sydney wasn’t mad about it or upset with her so much as she was with the entire situation. That being said, it was quite clear to her that Sydney was still upset about something.

“Something is bothering you though,” Nadia said finally, still staring out into the living room. Her mind replaying the events of the past few weeks, looking for incidents she could have missed that might be upsetting Sydney and finding that she had a plethora to choose from. And as she felt her sisters eyes on her, a few intimate moments they had recently shared also came to mind giving her pause, making her wonder if what had gradually been developing between them was finally catching up with Sydney.

Sydney stared at Nadia’s profile for a long moment after her sister had spoken and then finally turned away, her gaze drifting towards the kitchen as she wished that she were still in there scrubbing away. Anything to avoid the conversation they were having, and about to have, anything to avoid thinking about what she had learned from her mother’s music box. Anything to not think about another truth she was going to have to keep from her sister, this time about her own father.

She inhaled deeply, exhaling audibly before allowing her eyes to close for a moment. They had gotten so close, perhaps too close she acknowledged, but thoughts like that couldn’t compare to the power of the connection she felt to Nadia. It killed her to have to keep things from her, but to see the pain in her eyes that she knew would follow the revelation of any of her secrets was also something the thought of which was unbearable to her. She felt like she was in quick sand, damned no matter what she tried to do.

“Nadia,” Sydney began softly turning to face her sister once again. “I know I was abrupt with you after I found out, but I would never intentionally do anything to upset you,” she continued her voice holding an almost plaintively quality to it. “You know that, right? That I would never hurt …”

“I know,” Nadia responded cutting off the rest of Sydney’s statement, her eyes holding onto her sister’s, worry shinning through in them clearly as she thought about the turn the conversation had taken. “It’s probably the only thing I know for sure,” she continued, watching as Sydney seemed to sag at her words, the look in her eyes grateful and relieved as Nadia reached out, brushing the backs of her fingers against her sister’s cheeks softly, her fingers lingering against her skin for a moment before she finally dropped her hand.

“Everything’s always so complicated,” Sydney breathed out a moment after Nadia’s hand fell from her face, soundly vaguely like a disgruntled 5 year old that didn’t understand why they had to eat broccoli. She shifted closer to Nadia on the couch as she spoke stopping just short of crawling into her arms as she stopped and looked over at Nadia.

“Yeah,” Nadia agreed simply, smiling over at Sydney, glad that she had moved closer, just the proximity of her offering some comfort.

“Understatement?” Sydney asked a second later as she caught the look in Nadia’s eyes, a small smile coming to her face as she gazed over at her sister.

“Little bit,” Nadia replied grinning, lifting her hand to brush Sydney’s bangs off of her face where they had fallen out of the ponytail she had her hair tied back in.

Sydney sat quietly under Nadia’s ministrations, allowing her sister to return some semblance of order to her no doubt disheveled appearance; returning Nadia’s smile as she finished up and allowed her hand to fall away. Then she pushed forward, brushing her lips against Nadia’s, placing her sister’s fallen hand on her hip before letting her lips migrate to Nadia’s cheek.

“This is complicated too, isn’t it?” Nadia asked softly, her hand still on Sydney’s hip as her sister pulled back, her lips reluctantly leaving Nadia’s skin. Nadia stared at those lips as she waited for Sydney to respond, remembered the feel of them against her own, and then on her cheek, their soft, full warmth, the slight wetness she could still feel on her cheek. She wanted Sydney to kiss her again, or to kiss her back, she wasn’t sure which, and she didn’t actually think that it mattered. Complicated perhaps wasn’t strong enough a word when one ached to touch their sister’s skin.

“Yeah,” Sydney responded, she could feel Nadia’s eyes on her, studying her, was fully aware of Nadia’s hand beginning to move restlessly against her hip. Tension was radiating from Nadia’s body almost as if she was waiting for or anticipating something, barely able to control the excitement running through her body. She exhaled softly, raggedly, her eyes still on Sydney, and Sydney was sure that she could feel a shiver run through Nadia’s body.

She moved again after that, ever forward until her lips were on Nadia’s again, softly pressing against her sister’s lips at first, gentle and tentative like the other times they had teased each other with ghosting touches, and brief kisses, yielding to their desires and restraining themselves at the same time. But as she felt Nadia clutch at her, tugging, drawing her closer to her so that their bodies were pressed against each other as well as their lips, Sydney knew that this wouldn’t be like the fleeting chaste kisses they had shared before, and her heart began to hammer in her chest.

She felt Nadia’s lips part, the Argentine’s hand dipping under the fabric of her shirt so that Sydney could feel the delicate play of her fingers against the skin of her abdomen. She deepened the kiss, entering Nadia’s mouth with her tongue, not bothering to try and mask the small sound that emerged from her throat as she tasted Nadia, really tasted her for the first time. Liquid heat coursed through her body, she shifted her thighs her arm working its way around Nadia’s back as they continued to kiss.

Nadia moved her head forward brushing her lips briefly against Sydney’s again as her sister pulled back, both of their breathing laboured. She could feel Sydney’s chest moving against hers as she breathed in deeply, and sighed contently as she felt Sydney’s nose brush across her cheek, her lips briefly playing against her jaw before Sydney nuzzled her face into her neck, breathing in deeply, wrapping her arms more firmly around her waist, hugging their bodies together tightly. She felt light-headed and her heart was pounding beneath her breast, she felt as if she could feel it swelling and pulsing inside of her as she held Sydney. She felt incredibly happy.

Nadia lifted her hand to Sydney’s head, gently stroking her hair as Sydney clung to her. “This isn’t going to drive you to obsessively clean some more, is it?” She whispered against Sydney’s ear, pleased to feel Sydney’s lips curve into a smile where they lay against her skin.

“Why?” Sydney asked smiling as she finally pulled away from her sister’s body though she left one of her hands looped around Nadia’s back, wanting to remain connected to her in some way, not able to bear not touching her quite yet.

“You’ve been neglecting the bathroom,” Nadia responded looking over at Sydney through her eyelashes. Her lips twitching slightly as she fought the desire to break out into a full on, beaming smile as Sydney gazed over at her languidly.

“That’s cute,” Sydney replied her tone sounding rather unimpressed though she smiled warmly over at Nadia as she spoke, happily allowing Nadia to rest her head on her shoulder and snuggle against her side.

“As a button,” came her sister’s response somewhat mumbled response.

Sydney smiled at that, leaning back, lowering her back onto the couch so that her head was propped up on a pillow resting against the arm of the couch and Nadia was resting comfortably against her side, her head pillowed on Sydney’s shoulder. “I think so,” she said softly her eyes on the ceiling as she felt Nadia wrap her arm around her waist.

“Do you?” Nadia asked sounding serious and hopeful at the same time. After the night on the beach she had forced herself not to expect that type of intimacy again. And every time that they had shared a lingering touch or a brief kiss afterwards she would tell herself again not to expect it in the future. Other than her attempted explanation that first night, and Sydney’s interruption of it, they had not verbally acknowledged the closeness that had developed between them, and she had determinedly tried not to categorize or identify whatever it was, because that would make it real and all the more painful when it ended – when Sydney came to her senses. And she had believed over the past few weeks that a time would come, when she would move to kiss Sydney’s lips or cheek and Sydney would pull away from her awkwardly, avoiding her eyes before softly muttering something like, ‘we shouldn’t’ or ‘we can’t … anymore’.

But as she sat with her head on Sydney’s shoulder, her hand on her stomach feeling Sydney’s abdomen rise and fall, the taste of her still on her lips, her ears ringing with Sydney’s teasing comment, she wondered if it had to be that way, her hope that it didn’t, her desire for it to be something more coming through in her voice. She knew logically that they shouldn’t, that what they were doing would be considered abnormal, but she felt so happy, so safe, so loved, and those were things she had experienced very few times in her short life. Abnormal or not, she didn’t want it to end, she wanted to be happy, she wanted Sydney, and she prayed that Sydney wanted her.

“Yeah,” Sydney replied simply dropping her eyes so that she could see Nadia’s face. “You couldn’t be any cuter on the cutest day of the year with an electrified cute machine,” she continued smiling to herself as she recalled the line from ‘The Simpsons’. Years ago on one of the few occasions that she had managed to arrive home in the early evening, Francie had taken her by the shoulders and marched her over to couch pushing her down before flopping down beside and her making her watch the show with her. Halfway through they’d gotten ice-cream (not coffee flavored), and spent the rest of the night riffling through tabloid magazines and watching bad sitcoms. Without even meaning to, Francie had brought something normal and light into her life, just like always.

She felt Nadia shift against her and focused on her sister’s dark mop of hair once more. There was nothing normal about her life now, though as she felt a pair of lips press against her neck she had to acknowledge that there was something light. No, she thought to herself as she tilted her head to the side unconsciously giving Nadia more access to her neck, there was definitely nothing normal about falling for her sister. But as she heard Nadia playfully mumble, “You too possess an above average level of cuteness,” against her skin, she determined that normal had never really been in the cards for her, for either or them, and that they would just have to go with what was peculiar but good.
