So I saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on opening night, in packed theAtre after waiting in line for like a bajillion hours, and it WAS worth the wait. Goblet is my favorite HP book so far, and the trailers had me really hyped up for this movie so my expectations were fairly high, and really the movie didn't disappoint.
I really loved the cast of this movie. I'll admit right up front that I've been lusting after Robert Pattinson since the publicity shots of Cedric first started to appear, and he was even more McDreamy in motion. The first time Cedric showed up on screen, the audience actually gasped at the hotness, and continued to gasp and sigh every time his fine self showed up on screen. Pattinson was really excellent casting, I know for sure that I would've supported Cedric Diggory! The only complaint, NOT ENOUGH SCREEN TIME. I kept on wanting to see more of the pretty, though I understand with the length of the book that they didn't have enough time to show us more of the hawtness.
And speaking of hawtness, I have to say that's what most of the new cast brought in spades. Onto her Veela-ness herself ... Clemence Poesy was radiant as Fleur. People were complaining before the film about how she wasn't good enough looking to be Fleur and blah, blah, blah, and I think she probably proved most of teh wrong. Nobody would've been good enough looking to play Fleur, what you needed was someone with presence and charm that would catch and hold the viewers eye, and that's what Clemence did. When Fleur was on screen I was staring at her and thinking "Preeeeeety". She was very charsimatic and stunning in the scenes we got to see with Fleur (who there wasn't enough of in the movie! A common complaint with the Tri-wizard champions. I really wanted to see the scene where she complains about 'Arry being a little boy in the cheesy French accent, but alas it was not to be).
On to, Cho Chang. Katie Leung was charming as Cho Chang in what we saw. Most of that can be attributed to her sexy, sexy Scottish accent (Mmmm, it is sexy and Scottish) because she didn't really have much to do, but I could've listened to her read the phone book, and I understood why Harry would have a crush on Cho. After Order of the Pheonix, I couldn't STAND Cho Chang, just effing hated her, but Katie Leung made me forget that hatred of Cho while she was on screen (Scottish!) so props to her for that. Though if she does her job right in the next film, I'll end up hating Cho again (though I'll still think she has a sexy accent, lol). Also, very pretty girl.
Also really enjoyed Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Richardson is a foxy lady and her Rita Skeeter was way sexier that Skeeter has any right to be (nothing manly about her!) but she was hilarious. Over the top, gaudy, brash, in other words completely Skeeter. Not the Damn Edna-ish Skeeter of the book, but a wonderful variation on it. I hope to see Richardson in the Half-blood Prince movie.
Also, David Tennet *squee* I love the David Tennet and he was awesome as Barty Crouch Jr. Even all dirty and crazy he was hot, and even when he wasn't dirty he was still plenty CRAZY! lol
And finally, Ralph Fiennes was REALLY, REALLY good as Voldemort. He was creepy, but charismatic and intimidating. Even with the snake face, you could tell how people would've been lured in by him, and scared to death of him but also absolutely capitvated by him. I look forward to seeing more of him in the rest of the series
Daniel and Rupert were excellent as Harry and Ron. They really seem comfortable in their roles now, Rupert's cut down on the annoying mugging and is just genuinely funny now (and seems to be growing into his future ... and also has cool hair), and Daniel turned in a solid performance as Harry, and actually got some funny lines and scenes this time around, which made me like Harry more honestly.
Emma Watson, oh Emma Watson. Never practiculary cared for Watson's Hermione, I'll admit it up front. I LOVE Hermione in the novels, she's my favorite, book Hermione, is smart, and charming, and dreamy. Watson's Hermione is kinda whiney, arrogant, and off-putting, though she seemed to be getting better as teh movies went on, until I genuinely liked her Hermione in Prisoner of Azkaban. She seemed to take a step back acting wise for this movie however. Hermione was fine, and wasn't really annoying or all that arrogant this movie, it was mostly the fact that Watson seemed to be acting entirely with her eyebrows that off-put me this time.
*raise eyebrows* Harry! *lower eyes* Are you okay? *squint eyebrows* You told me you solved the clue ages ago! I get it, you can move your eyebrows. Try using some other parts of your face now!
Gotta mention Neville, because he's been a steady part of the scenery in the other movies but had some really nice sweet scenes in this one. The actor (Matthew ... Lewis?) did a really great job giving Neville some adorable layers in the few scene he had.
Draco got turned into a ferret, and is now tall. That's pretty much all Tom Felton had to do, where a nice suit, and be tall and blond.
McGonagall and Snape were good in their limited amount of screen time. And I continue to be a fan of Michael Gambon's Dumbledore (though the weird rubber band he had tied around the beard distracted me at times ... and yes, I know that probably wasn't Gambon's choice).
Surprisingly this movie had a few nice slashy moments. The most obvious would be the scene when Cedric told Harry to take his egg into the prefect bathroom. Just the way they had Pattinson get all close to Radcliffe, talking about how the prefect bathroom was a really nice place to take a bath or whatever, it came across really gay like Diggory was almost offering to join Harry! The dialogue was pretty much the same as in the novel, but live action it was just tres slasy. Also, Pattinson is so pretty that it's just easy to go there with it, lol.
Then there was the scene when Rita Skeeter is first introduced to the tri-wizard champions and comments on how beautiful Fleur is before cupping her jaw and stroking her cheek with her thumb. Clemence gave a nice little 'WTF, is she coming onto me?' look after Rita was done feeling her up that cracked me up. Plus, Miranda Richardson looked good, and I would've liked to see the interview with Rita and Fleur in the broom closet all pressed up against each other with Rita randomly touching her! That would've been good times.
And then here was a little scene with Hermione and Ginny walking off together after Hermione delivers a message to Harry from Ron when the two aren't speaking. Hermione gets all "I'm not a messanger owl!" and then stomps off side by side with her girlfriend Ginny, lol.
Overall, I'd give the movie 4 out of 5 stars. Solid acting, nice action scenes, plenty of pretty pretty people, and a nice amount of darkness and creepiness paving the way for the coming movies in the series.

Date: 2005-11-21 12:24 am (UTC)I felt the same way about the trio. And I'm kind of sad about Hermione because I did like Watson's portrayal of her up until now. Eyebrows. EYEBROWS.
Miranda Richardson is a goddess of course.
Oh, and I loved her little slashy scene with Fleur XD

Date: 2005-11-22 02:59 am (UTC)Definately not, although I can see how you could feel soooo alone! So many people have been slamming Clemence's looks. [Simpsons] It makes baby Jesus cry [/Simpsons]. I thought she was awesome in the role, and I totally would've fallen under her charms (even after the stupid dance number ... and her crappy performances in the challenges! Seriously, J.K would it have killed you to make Fleur proficient or at least not have sucked hard at ONE of them?)
Eyebrows. EYEBROWS.
Seriously, the eyebrows are the only thing I can remember about her from the movie. Except for the Yule Ball scene where she was all giddy and cute, for those like 10 seconds, lol
Miranda Richardson is a goddess of course.
Oh, and I loved her little slashy scene with Fleur XD
Word. Miranda Richardson is 'teh sex' Like it just goes against nature or something to make Rita Skeeter hawt, but Richardson succeeded (natural hotness shining through, I guess).
And I'll love her forever for adding some Les!YAY to movie. That little scene was awesome, I kept hoping we'd see some more F/R in action together later in the movie, but alas ...
