A great and terrible obsession ...
Jan. 2nd, 2008 02:41 amSo after reading The Sweet Far Thing I've been completely obsessed with Libba Bray's Gemma Doyle Trilogy, and since I learned that they're making a movie of at least the first book, A Great and Terrible Beauty, I've been obsessed trying to cast my perfect versions of the characters.
So because I am obsessed and currently have too much free time on my hands ...
I should probably start with Gemma since she is the heroine of the trilogy, but she's been one of the hardest for me to cast so I'm not going to start with her, I'm going to start with beautiful, tragic Pippa.
While reading the book I was kind of picturing Leighton Meester with a British accent, but since that's likely never going to be reality, I turned my mind to young British actresses and had a hell of a time trying to cast someone, and then I was re-watching Aeon Flux and and it came to me ... Amelia Warner! Amelia is now my absolutely favorite choice for Pippa and I'm going to be heartbroken when the role inevitably goes to someone else, but whatever.

Next is Felicity Worthington, my new literary girlfriend. *hugs* *dreamy sigh* Oh, Felicity how I love thee.
Right now I've got to say that my favorite choice for Felicity is Imogen Poots (if they decide to go with actual teenage actors instead of 20 something's which the British tend to do actually)

Felicity's piercing icy blue eyes are something that really sticks out in my mind about the character, and Imogen has got those same crazy gorgeous, hypnotic eyes. She can also play vulnerable and strong well. I could totally see her in the chain-mail with a sword and/or a bow.
I mean tell me that when Felicity goes all warrior woman in the realms she wouldn't look totally badass and crazy gorgeous like this ...

My other choice for Felicity is Christina Cole who most people know as Cassie from Hex. She's the perfect age to be oppose Amelia as Pippa, and she's a very good actress and can definitely play all of the different/complex aspects of Felicity. Girlfriend can also be hella fierce which is must. Unfortunately it's hard to find adecent picture of her ... she's kind of like the female Robert Pattinson in that she's much hotter when on screen walking and talking then in still photographs.

Then of course there is Gemma, the heroine of the trilogy. The leading fan favorite for her is Rachel Hurd-Wood.

I'm not in love with the idea of Rachel as Gemma, I'm not sure she's fierce enough or funny enough for the character and I think there's a possiblity that Gemma could be very emo and whiny in her hands, but that being said she's one of the better suggestions.
My personal favorite for Gemma right now is Romola Garai. I was quite impressed with her in Atonement, and she can pull off red hair, and has a sturdiness and strength about her that I think would work very well for Gemma.

Look how sassy she is in this picture. Love it! After this youtube video I would totally support the idea of Romola as Felicity. She's still my number one choice for Gemma since I think Gemma will be the harder role to cast truly, but she works really well as Felicity too (just look at that shot with the bow and arrow, that's classic Felicity Worthington right there).
I have absolutely no idea who to cast for Anne Bradshaw but lots of people have been tossing around Allison Pill as a suggestion and visually she's actually almost exactly how I imagined Anne.

The 13 year old are all obsessing about who is going to play Kartik but I don't really care, and I pity the actor chosen because he's never going to be good enough looking for them. If Mohinder was 10-15 years younger he would have been perfect for the role (Sendhil is so very, very pretty) and I young Mohinder was pretty much my visual for the character, but I think Atta Yaqub could do a good job and he is quite good looking (good looking enough to survive the fangirls even) though he's not exactly as the character was described.

Miss Moore is another character that I really loved in the first book, but I'm not as obsessed with who they cast for her as I am for the main four girls. My personal favorite for Miss Moore however is Saffron Burrows.

My next favorite choice for the role is Polly Walker

Other suggestions for Miss Moore have been Olivia Williams, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Weisz, and I'll throw Lena Headey's name out there too. But I'm pretty sure that someone would have be totally high and/or crazy to cast someone in the role I find offense. Basically a pretty, dark-haired woman in the mid-30s + range who can act and be sexy and strong will make a good Miss Moore.
And there is my obsessive, crazy casting post for the four main girls (I mean really, the whole thing is really about Gemma, Felicity, Anne and Pippa in the first book), and Miss Moore because I love her like I'm Gemma or something, and Kartik because well you've got to cast Kartik.
As for the other characters I look forward to whatever mixed bag of famous British actors the casting director throw at us (I wonder who Alan Rickman is going to play, cause you know he's going to end up in there somewhere!)
If you've read the books (or just like casting movie roles) lemme know what you think or people you would cast!
