All I have left to express my feelings are Demotivational Posters. So, here are my feelings on aspects of the series in ... uh, Demotivational Poster form!
Somebody needs to send this to Rachel Morgan...

and this ...

Rachel should also probably take a gander at this ...

I think the following is Cock Blocks PR strategy ...

Now listen up Kimmy Gibbler ...

Femslash fans, can I get an 'AMEN'

This ones for me, and that makes me sad.

Date: 2009-04-28 09:37 pm (UTC)I was able to over look these characteristics in Rachel in the first few books, because I honestly thought that she would mature. But, yeah, it gets old really fast. Her habit of saying hurtful things (usually to Ivy) and then muttering sorry doesn't wash anymore. Like, I wouldn't want to know Rachel IRL. Normally, when I love a pairing I'd totally want to hang out with them IRL, but Rachel would bug the shit out of me if we knew each other. I'm always going on to my students about personal responsibility, so it annoys me that Rachel has no sense of this. She's like a fourteen year old girl (the spoiled, bitchy annoying kind, not the cool, funny smart kind).
And when I first read the books, Jenks was funny. On my re-read I realize he's a little jackass and not in a good, humorous way.
I've always thought that Jenks was an immature little shit. Which is why I'm convinced he and Rachel get along so well. A lot of the time I find him irritating and which that he would just shut his tiny little mouth. I'll admit, that the way he's treated Ivy in the past is the main cause of a lot of my annoyance with him, but there are times when they are just out in public and he refuses to behave like an adult, and I'm like "Grow the fuck up dude". But of course, Rachel behaves the same way, mouthing off when she shouldn't and generally acting like she's the Queen of the Universe and everyone should drop everything they're doing to accommodate her, so again, I can see why they are so buddy-buddy.

Date: 2009-04-28 10:00 pm (UTC)Then again, a lot of people like Dr. House and he's a total ass. I don't really dislike Rachel. She might not be a very responsible person, but not a lot of young people are. There are a lot of worse things a person can be. At least Rachel tries to be a better person.
When it comes to urban fantasy, Rachel is low (IMHO) on the scale of Queen of the Universe-ness. Most of the protagonist women in urban fantasy are raging egomaniacs. Most people in the books just worship them and grovel at their feet for no particular reason, just because.

Date: 2009-04-28 10:57 pm (UTC)There is this. His devotion to Rachel and Matalina are positive characteristics. His love for Matalina more than anything else is why I can't dislike him entirely. But yeah, his 'fairy farts' this and that just aren't amusing to me, and his immaturity can be annoying.

I guess I don't dislike Rachel so much as I'm annoyed by her. I have moments of thinking she's hilarious, and moments where I just want to smack her. But, despite the selfishness and lack of impulse control, and moments of pettiness, she does try to improve people's lives. She's not a bad person, she's just got a lot of growing to do.
But I have to say that Rachel isn't really that young anymore. She's like what 25/26 or something by now, that's not ancient but it's like 16 either. People are married with families at that age. Rachel should/could be more mature.
Then again, a lot of people like Dr. House and he's a total ass.
It's funny you mention him, cause I just used a House .gif. I don't like the character though, and can't watch the show cause of how much of an ass he is. I can't like someone who is so willfully mean. The .gif is funny though, so it's fair game ;)

I think you're right about this. I've only recently looked into Urban Fantasy because of Blood Ties, and True Blood, and now the Hollows, and I can't really take it. I honestly believe that Rachel is pretty low on the scale of Queen of the Universeness for Urban Fantasy (I was talking with a friend reading the Sookie Stackhouse series, and I was rolling my eyes practically out of my head at just her descriptions of what was going on), which is why I'm not going anywhere near the Sookie Stackhouse books or the Blood Ties books, because Rachel is too much for me, and she's one of the best!

Date: 2009-04-28 11:05 pm (UTC)Witches live for like 300 years in the books IIRC (needs citation).
So Rachel is about 8 or something in "human years".

Date: 2009-04-28 11:18 pm (UTC)Either way, vampires live a long time too and Ivy acts like the 30 years old or so she is. Marshall acted like a grown up. Kisten acted like a grown up. Even Nick acted like a douchy grown up.
I mean if Rachel was really 8 in "human years" that would make everyone she slept with like a pedophile/statutory rapist. Witches live a long time, but their mental development follows that of a human, so she's got no excuse. If witches were universally presented as being immature until they were 50 or 60 or something, then okay. But as it stands, Rachel is the only one who comes across so immature.
