Lost Girl - 2x10 - Raging Fae
Nov. 27th, 2011 10:09 pmLost Girl's streak of not sucking continues!
They remembered Bo's past and addressed it! There is an epic (both in content and cuteness) Bo/Lauren scene! Lauren wasn't joking last episode about things just tumbling out of her mouth!
The Bo/Dyson angle of this triangle still bugs the hell out of me, but at least it really is feeling like a triangle (quadrangle?) now. Plus, Lauren is still the one that Bo opens up to and reveals her feelings to, whereas Bo and Dyson continue to be Twi-tense about each other but do not actually talk to each other or seem to have personalities when in each others presence.
Bo's still dumb as a rock. But, I continue to be able to take it and, can almost respect, her righteous simplicity this season. It's so nice to be able to cheer for the heroine again.
The Ash stuff and the Nain Rouge stuff continues to interest me, but I most definitely need this Nadia cock-blockage to be addressed soon.
Like, it doesn't have to happen next episode, but I can't take like seven more episode of Lauren's Nadia angst and Nadia's comatose state keeping Bo and Lauren in this holding pattern, where stealth kisses and verbal slips aside, nothing really happens. I know that once Nadia wakes up the cock-blockage and angst will continue, but at least with all of the players awake and moving around things can start to move forward - or sideways, or backward, or whatever, but at least things will be moving).

Date: 2011-11-30 12:41 am (UTC)Damn, I forgot about that.
I assume that Bo spent a decade assuming... that she was a sex monster, and that her choices in life were commit suicide, or eat people...
And this right here is my problem, because if she did choose and/or let herself kill random people for a decade just to protect herself that's some EVIL shit right there.
The show is obviously not interested in delving too deeply into Bo's psychology and so as a viewer I would totally accept a little retconning if it was about Bo 'Dexter-ing' her way through life as opposed to killing indiscriminately when she got peckish.
Because a Bo that 'just hoped she was mostly killing bad guys' is not someone I want to watch (especially since her attitude since arriving in Fae Town has been so lacksadaisical).
In a way, it's a shame Bo is the lead character on the show. Her backstory would suit her to be something like a support character with major penance and issues
I don't know, I mean people can get on-board with characters with pretty bad pasts, given that it's addressed - and without the character constantly angsting.
Like who doesn't love Xena, and she was a murdering warlord for years! The thing is, Xena owned up to her past, and then was focused on helping people so you could support her because of the good she was doing and the remorse she felt.
And Cara from Legend of Seeker. She spent years torturing, humiliating and abusing people in various ways. Yet, again she acknowledged her past, apologized for her mistakes and worked to try to help people.
Both Xena and Cara were pretty despicable in their pasts, but the audiences love them, and they were both well-rounded characters who weren't constantly moping around because of their prior bad deeds.
Lost Girl could have easily taken the same route with Bo. In an early episode she could have had a talk with Kenzi where she was like, "I killed live Kenz. They were bad people, but they were people and I took their lives. Maybe the world's better off without them, maybe it's not. We'll never know because of me. But I'm here, I'm alive, and now I know how to control this thing inside of me and do something good with it, and that's what I'm going to do." And then the audience and Bo could have moved on to her redemption.
The problem with Lost Girl was that they were like "BO WAS ON A KILLING SPREE" and then she was just like a horny sorority girl for most of the season. Xena and Cara went through arcs before they got BFFs, and were trusted and respected by those around them.
Whereas, Bo just seemed to flip a switch, and being hit on the nose by Kenzi was enough to tame her instincts and she was just instantly a social butterfly that everyone immediately trusted and was willing to risk their lives to help. No struggle.
I think it was lazy writing in the first season was the problem, not Bo's past. The writers just stuck their fingers in their ears, and ignored problems that could have been solved relatively easily, and now its a source of majority irritation to people.
Is it a bad sign for my morality that IMO the worst thing Bo did in S1 was mojo that waitress and skip out on the tab?
I thought that was really bad too. Bo really didn't make the best first impression. The second season has started to redeem her in my eyes, but I pretty much have to forget like 95% of Bo's actions in Season 1 to groove with her this season.
I mean, where does BO "KILLING SPREE" DENNIS (is this really her last name?) get off freezing Lauren out for omitting information? Sit your murdering ass down Bo, and really consider which of the two of you has moral indignation on her side.

Date: 2011-11-30 01:02 am (UTC)Of course Lost Girl is not that kind of show, but "well, I dated nice people, or picked up ransoms in clubs, then ate them and moved to a new city" is pretty horrific.

Date: 2011-11-30 01:16 am (UTC)And in the same way that her Mord'Sith past makes people want to cuddle Cara, I could see Bo volunteering putting herself in the hands of those people to save other people from her really engendering sympathy for her (which is very much missing at the moment).
Having a succubus main character should have been really interesting, but TPTB have ignored and sidelined Bo's nature so much that someone could go episodes without even realizing/remembering that she's a succubus.
Bo could have been this epically tragic character, a combination of Cara and Kahlan, having to sleep with people she detests to survive while unable to ever touch someone she loves for fear of destroying them. Instead, she's ... well, Bo.
but "well, I dated nice people, or picked up ransoms in clubs, then ate them and moved to a new city" is pretty horrific.
THIS! In fact it's the most horrific way. I could deal with her having a murderous past in pretty much ANY way but this, which is why I want it dealt with cause this is totally what it feels like!
