Repost: BSG: Razor ramblings

I totally need to take a nap right now but that's not gonna stop me from rambling for a bit ...
First, I'm going to allow my shallower viewer to show by saying ... Shaw was mad hot. Seriously, I was girl crushing on her. And the accent *swoons* I would have loved to see more of Stephanie Chaves-Jacobsen's fine self on BSG, but since we'd never heard of Shaw before I figured she wasn't long for the world.
Second, it was nice to see Starbuck going back to her roots. Watching Razor I remembered why I liked Starbuck so much, and mourned how much her mopiness last season sucked. Plus Katee smiling = love. I really enjoyed all of Starbucks scenes in this, which I haven't been able to say in a very long time.
Third, I love watching Michelle Forbes on my screen. Seriously, she's so good. She was amazing in this. I mean, I can never get behind what Cain did but Michelle really sold her as a fallible human. I mean I understand where Cain was coming from, how the situation, and her personality, and Gina's betrayal fucked her up to a point where she was doing things based on her screwed up emotional state, but really thought that she was doing what was best for everyone. It was heartbreaking to watch, but beautifully acted.
Seriously Michelle, you make me lust after Cain so much.
Fourth, the femslasher in me kind of loved the romance. No it wasn't a huge part of the movie, but it was important to Cain's storyline and it was glorious in its angst. I liked that we were given an explanation for how Cain could allow what happened to Gina to happen (even though seeing it hurt). On a shallower note, it was nice to see Tricia and Michelle making schmoopy faces at each other for while, though all of their cute interaction was also heartbreaking because you knew what was going to happen.
I also liked that they had Gina pause when she had the opportunity to shoot Cain in CC. It made the whole romance even more tragic because Gina did have real feelings for Cain even if she did betray her. *gets misty-eyed*
The femslasher in me also loved that Shaw seemed to have a crush on Cain as well (or that Stephanie Chaves-Jacobsen had a crush on Michelle Forbes. I don't know, but either way it was awesome).
Fifth, more shallow viewing ... it was nice to see Steve Bacic as Cain's first XO. I love Steve Bacic like whoa *pets the pretty*
Sixth, Starbuck as the bringer of destruction to humanity? Great, awesome ... more issues for Starbuck. Because I love mopey issues ridden Starbuck ... oh wait, did I say love? I meant HATE! PASSIONATELY HATE MOPEY ISSUES RIDDEN STARBUCK! *sigh*
Speaking of that though, I totally would have loved the stuff with the hybrid more if Pete Postlethwaite had been playing him. It just seems like something Pete Postlethwaite should have played and I was irrationally annoyed by the hybrid because of it.
Finally, all in all, I really liked Razor. I enjoyed seeing more Cain and getting to know Shaw even though she was essentially a footnote.
P.S. I can't believe the Cylons were stupid enough to let model 6's board the Pegasus knowing that they had an agent on board. What kind of planning was that? Bad Cylons, bad!

Date: 2007-11-25 07:48 am (UTC)Seriously. And I knew she was going to die but I was more than willing to handwave any continuity issues if it meant more Shaw. She is - 'hello! where have *you* been all my life?' hot!
Plus, at the rate Starbuck's ex-girlfriend's are kicking the bucket on this show, I'm gonna have to start calling her the Black Widow.
I think my favorite scene was the one where Starbuck busted Shaw. And Starbuck's all 'you are soo my bitch now'. And Shaw's like 'bitch puh-leeze, I can hurt you so good in ways you haven't even heard of'. And Starbuck's 'true, but as they say - it's a long way to being my top. And don't even play like you aren't gonna watch my ass as I strut out of here'.
I think, in the end, I was just a *tiny* bit disappointed in that this wasn't really about Cain as much as it was a setup for the next season of Galactica. As much as Forbes sold it, I really don't think they did as good a job as I expected of explaining *why* she made the choices she did. And, in the end, there was that feeling Cain doing what she did not so much because of the dire circumstances but because she was a borderline nutjob who cracked under pressure. That's more of a time issue, imo. This could easily have been a two-parter. There's was alot of info squeezed into 100 minutes without any opportunity to breathe.

Date: 2007-11-25 09:45 pm (UTC)I know! I mean it was worse for me, because apparently I'm an idiot and I didn't have any idea she was going to die (I know, I know so slow it borders on special) so when the bomb thing happened I was all like "But...but...but THE PRETTY! Nooooooooooooooo!" Not only was she gorgeous, but she's a very good actress as well, she totally sold me on Kendra and had be totally invested in her and I felt sorry for her instead of wanting to kick her ass like I did most of the Galactica crew when we got the "so and so has ISSUES" episodes.
I'm gonna have to start calling her the Black Widow.
It's so true. Starbuck is purty, but I'd avoid her like the black plague knowing that some horrible fate awaited me if we had any chemistry together.
I think my favorite scene was the one where Starbuck busted Shaw.
That was a good scene, I totally dug everything about it (and am especially fond of it because it made me like Starbuck again. Last season she pissed me off, and that scene was when I remembered why I used to like the character). *mourns the fact there shall be no more Shaw/Starbuck bonding*
I think, in the end, I was just a *tiny* bit disappointed in that this wasn't really about Cain as much as it was a setup for the next season of Galactica.
Word. We didn't really get the indepth look at Cain that I was hoping we would. It was more like they just showed us stuff that was implied in season 2, and then threw in "and she had her heartbroken" plotline as an explanation of why she was so crazy, instead of really exploring the issue.
And, in the end, there was that feeling Cain doing what she did not so much because of the dire circumstances but because she was a borderline nutjob who cracked under pressure.
Yeah. They really needed to show more of what the Pegasus went threw in order for us to understand why Cain acted the way she did. I mean, I can come up with all sorts of explanations myself, but it's not really great storytelling to make the viewer do that much work.
That's more of a time issue, imo. This could easily have been a two-parter.
It really should have been, even if it was three hours split into 1 1/2 hour installments would have given them enough time to really delve into Cain and the Pegasus more. And, shallow viewing aside, would have given them a chance to show Gina and Cain interact one on one which would have added weight to Gina's betrayal. I mean, one scene of Cain being weak and Gina comforting her would have made the later reveal so much more effecting.

Date: 2007-11-25 09:51 pm (UTC)Definitely "in a good sense". The accent is hot. I'm one of those North American's who totally fetishize accents so Shaw's made for some good tv *rowr* *clawing motion*
Starbuck was awesome and cute and i love her to peices all over again
Yeah, I was hating on Starbuck pretty hard by the end of last season, so it was nice to actually be able to enjoy the character again. I think Katee's a terrific actress, so it's nice not to shudder whenever I see her pop up on screen because I know Starbuck's gonna be a douche nozzle.
so. Much. Gay in this tv movie :P everyone was crushing on everyone it was great.
I KNOW! I loved it. Kendra and Gina were totally flirting when Gina gave her the directions to CIC. Kendra had the biggest girl!crush/hero worship ever on Cain. Gina and Cain goes without saying. Kendra and Starbuck were totally flirting (and rewatching I noticed that when Starbuck was first talking about singing 99 bottles of Ambroisa over the comms that Shaw was totally smirking before she remembered that on the Pegasus you're not supposed to be happy and smothered it).
Overall, Kendra was just totally gay in general. As if her crazy gorgeousness wasn't enough to love her, Stephanie Chavez-Jacobsen totally brought the gay in spades as well *cries* Kennnnnnndraaaaaaa!

Date: 2007-11-25 07:52 pm (UTC)I have to admit that it was well done in terms of the storytelling. I like they way they wove the flashbacks into the main story, especially because we got to see those great close ups of Stephanie's gorgeous face. *grins*

Date: 2007-11-25 10:00 pm (UTC)lol, I know. I totally still routinely call her Engsign Ro. Especially for sci-fi fans that will always be her definitive thing. I've seen her tons of other stuff and loved her in everything, but it also comes back to Ro Laren.
Imagine my surprise when Stephanie Chaves-Jacobsen walked onto my screen!! *swoons* The woman is a banger fo' sho'.
I know, I was pleasantly surprised by her hotness as well. Even crazy as hell I always found Cain hella hot, so I totally was looking forward to ogling Michelle Forbes for 2 hrs, but getting to ogling Shaw too was a very nice surprise (and getting to watch Shaw ogle Cain even nicer).
I preferred the original Pegasus crew and found them a lot more interesting, a lot more grayer.
Yeah, I was actually kind of annoyed by how much Galactica we got in the movie. I was really expecting it to be like 90% about the Pegasus, and I thought the whole point of it was that people found the Pegasus crew so interesting that they wanted more and this was supposed to be the more, and I felt kind of shafted by lack of Pegasus and Cain in this.
I wish they did a little more w/ Cain, instead of pretty much portraying her as a "woman scorned, see her fury" cliche. She was a lot more complex than that and I think that was what we were suppose to see that through Kendra's eyes.
Yeah, with Cain we were pretty much just shown stuff that they said she did in the second season. And yeah, okay, fine, but I was hoping to understand WHY she felt compelled to make these decisions instead of just seeing her decisions being carried out. And "the woman scorned" angle to explain everything was really, really weak. Made weaker by the fact that Gina and Cain didn't even have a one on one scene together to really show what their relationship was like. I mean, even one scene of like Cain being vulnerable in front of Gina and sharing her concerns while Gina comforted her would have made the "Gina is a cylon" reveal so much more effective. As it is, I think I have a better understanding of Cain then I did from the second season, but there's still a lot of questions left unanswered.
especially because we got to see those great close ups of Stephanie's gorgeous face. *grins*
Yeah, those were definitely appreciated *high fives the director*

Date: 2007-11-25 08:56 pm (UTC)That was bugging me too. I am totally new to the whole BSG thing, so I was wondering if the Cylons are just a bunch of cocky ass bitches and assumed they would be victorious. Because that was just dumb.
I have some serious catching up to do now. I blame Tricia.

Date: 2007-11-25 10:05 pm (UTC)Of course, there's always room on the Stephanie Chavez-Jacobsen Love Train!
My gawd, she was great to watch and that accent *swoon* Where can I get more of her
I know, she was awesome. And not just crazy good looking, but also a really good actress. Now I totally want to see more things with her, but her filmography is like non-existant *cries* Hopefully, this will be a nice little step forward for her getting more roles so that I can ogle her more.

*shrugs* It just seemed really stupid and unnecessary. I mean where other models who didn't have an under cover version on board that they could have sent. It just seemed really contrived that of all of the models they had to send a six on board.
I have some serious catching up to do now. I blame Tricia.
Tricia is awesome. She is a terrific actress and very versitle. She's played a few different versions of sixes and she always manages to make them unique and distinct from each other. Plus, pretty.
