This post is gonna pose as a review of WANTED, but mostly it's going to be gushing about Angelina Jolie and her irresistible brand of tough-sexy that ... makes the pants happy.

I totally need to take a nap right now but that's not gonna stop me from rambling for a bit ...

And no, I'm not talking about the comic or TV show. I'm talking about the Hitchcock movie which I just watched tonight (yes, for the first time, shut up!)

Thoughts on The Birds (1963):

- Tippi Hedren was ridiculously good looking. Womanly sass and elegance personified. *has major girlcrush on her 33 year old self*

- Suzanne Pleshette rocks the casbah. Her Annie was like one of the best things in the movie, because Annie was so gay. Every time she looked at Melanie (Tippi) or spoke to her it seemed like she was coming on to her. They were actually so lesbionic together that at one point one of friends was like "are they gonna sleep in the same room?" cause, really, it did seem like the end of a really great date. Also, since Annie dies I'm going to assume she was hitting on Melanie cause that's what happened to those types of characters back in the day. Also, like Tippi Hedron, Pleshette was mad gorgeous back in the day.

All subtext aside though, it was a very nice treat to see two women of similar age interacting on screen together, which was quite rare during this time. I was like, 'OMG, they have the chicks talking to each other! What is going on here?' Also, at no point were they bitchy or catty to each. Twas great.

- I wish I was the daughter of the owner of a newspaper so that I could look fabulous, hang out in bird stores all day, take impromptu trips to the coast to play jokes on people, and jump into fountains in Rome nude. Seriously.

- The scene at the bar where the townspeople are discussing the bird situation is gold. It had the greatest mix of characters ever. I totally would have hung out there. You had the bombshell blonde from the city, the sea captain with a jazzy hat, the talkative bartender, the crazy drunken Irishman, an old lady with a convenient knowledge of the subject, an arrogant newspaper man from the city, and a mom with two whiny children who in a hysterical voice tells everyone else to be quiet because they're scaring the children.

That combined with Tippi Hedren's expression as she watched the newspaper guy light his cigarette while surrounded by a pool of gasoline made for a fine cinematic experience.

- Birds are effing creepy. I already hated birds before this, and this movie only confirmed to be that I was right to loath and suspect them! Seriously, the swarming scenes were like seeing my nightmares on screen, and when they got to the close-ups of the pecking, and I was practically hyperventilating. Hate. Birds.

That being said, the special effects were really top notch for the time period it was made. I was very impressed.

- If you have a fur coat and birds are attacking you, don't take off the coat to walk around in your smart looking suit, keep the fur coat on, it will offer more protection! Just had to say.

- The guy playing Jessica Tandy's son in the movie looked like he was about 45 years old, which means that visually she only looked about 10 years or so older than him (although IRL he was only 33). That and the fact that he called her "darling" and "dear", combined with Annie talking about how Lydia (Tandy) was jealous of any girl her son brought home, gave most of their scenes together a really weird Oedipal vibe. (but, like with Stardust, the mother and the future daughter-in-law, got to snuggle in the backseat together which was great. *sigh* If only Annie had offered to give Melanie a massage, it would have been the best ever)

Overall impression:

Good movie, I highly enjoyed it! If you haven't seen it I would definitely recommend it. *sigh* Just one more reason not to listen to the people at Blockbuster. The guy who checked us out told us that the movie sucked, but because this was the same guy that we heard recommending Mindhunters to someone a couple weeks ago, we didn't pay attention to him and I'm glad we didn't. Worst video store guy ever.

(fights urge to write Melanie/Annie fic since I actually have to go back to work *sob* ... and it was a losing battle Small Town Hospitality - Melanie/Annie, PG)

Angelina Jolie on the hood of a Viper with guns.  Awesome.  I mean, with Angie and James McAvoy in it playing assassins I was already guaranteed to see this movie, but this picture only makes it seem so much sweeter.  It's like a funnel cake where they give you strawberry and carmel sauce over your ice-cream.  Yum!

UPDATE: Angelina Jolie looking bad-ass ... MORE PICTURES )

Then there's the description of the new movie Push, starring Chris Evans, Djimon Hounsou, Dakota Fanning and Camilla Belle about "a group of young American ex-pats with telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities who hide from a U.S. government agency in Hong Kong. They must band together and use their different talents to try to escape the control of the division."

The film is going to be directed by Paul McGuigan, who did Lucky Number Slevin and Wicker Park, both of which I liked so I have hopes that Push might just turn out to be as cool as it sounds.

*sigh* If only they had managed to find a way to have Jolie playing a sexy assassin shooting at a group of young American ex-pats with telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities from the hood of a Viper in Hong Kong, I'm pretty sure that it would have been the best movie ever.

They've got a little mention of the Y: The Last Man movie in development over at afterellen where they were talking about possible casting. And since I think Y: The Last Man, and speculating about casting I decided to throw my hat in.

This is what I came up with:

Yorrick = Ryan Reynolds, whenever I picture a live action version of the character the image that always comes to mind is Reynolds.

Some other people suggested John Kraskinski and Ryan Gosling which I think would be two pretty good choices as well. Kraskinski I think speaks for itself, and I remember Gosling in his smartass Breaker High days and if he could channel that (which I'm sure he could cause he's awesome) with his new manly hotness I think he'd be a great Yorrick.

Agent 355 = Traci Thoms, my conviction that Traci Thoms would make a wonderful, totally badass 355 has only been strengthen since Grindhouse: Death Proof, which she pwned. I'm gonna mention some other names here, but if anyone but Traci Thoms is cast I'm gonna be disappointed.

Another "Death Proof" alum suggested was Rosario Dawson, and while she's kind of a go to black actress (kind of like the African American Lucy Liu: see below), I can't really see it.

A suggestion was also made for Rose Rollins, which is alright I think, if a bit obscure. Again, she's a bit more of a straight up hottie than I pictured 355, but she's pretty bad ass from what I've seen (which admittedly isn't a lot since I cannot watch an entire episode of TLW).

Dr. Mann = Maggie Q, yeah okay that's mostly because I like looking at Maggie Q and I'd get to look at her for a long time in a Y: The Last Man movie, but I think she'd also be pretty good in the role. Also, let's be honest, Maggie Q is young and hot, and one of the new "it" girls which means that her chances are like a bajillion times higher than anyone else I could think to suggest.

Sandra Oh, is also an inspired choice. Sandra delivering "Y"ish dialogue would be a thing of beauty, also we already know that she can play a doctor, lol

Actually the casting of this character just reminded me how very few mainstream Asian American actresses there are out there. I defy you to tell me that your first reaction wasn't just to think "Lucy Liu". You know it was! And then after that you were probably like ... ah, Ming Na, um, Margart Cho, Sandra Oh, ah, Michelle Yeoh ...um, Boomer, or Sun from lost ... ooh, or that chick from Relic Hunter. Then if you got really desperate, you were maybe like, ah Kristi Yamaguchi, Connie Chung?

Or if you're me you mourned that you couldn't throw Gong Li's name into the hat because her English isn't quite there yet (*dreamy sigh* Oh, Gong).

Also, because I just finished watching "Skinwalkers" I'll just say it's a shame that Natassia Malthe is such an incredibly bad actress, like painfully, horribly, I wonder how she keeps getting jobs shit actress, because she is absolutely stunning and kind of reminds me of some pictures of Dr. Mann. But she's so horrible, that I really only brought her up cause she pretty and you might want to look at some pictures of her or something.

Hero = Jennifer Carpenter, I think she's practically perfect for it. Check out an episode of Dexter and tell me if you couldn't see her in the role. Also, I think she looks remarkably like comic Hero.

Someone also suggested Piper Perabo, and while having Piper in the movie would automatically increase the les!yay but a gajillion times and make the idea of Hero being straight (which I already kind of don't believe, lol) completely unbelievable, I'm not sure how sold I am on the idea.

I'll admit that I'm a bit of a tough sell on casting Hero though because I like the idea of Jennifer Carpenter so much (see comments of Traci Thoms)

So if you are at all familiar with the series, what do you think?

Books

Blood and Chocolate

Plot behind cut )

This book is sooooo good. I couldn't put it down, I read it in like two days (and only stopped because I had to proctor some exams and didn't want my students seeing me reading a young adult novel, even if it was a totally kick-ass one).

If you've seen the movie and didn't like, or were rather ambivalent to it don't let that taint you from the book. The book is really nothing like the movie at all, and all of the things that bugged be about the movie were completely absent from the novel. The only thing they really have in common are the names (and not even the relationships), and the term loup-garou. The novel is so much better

It's a fun, sensuous, supernatual ride, that's engaging and well written (subtle and lovely character development that had me wishing for something I totally didn't expect by the end of the novel). It's a quick read, and from the first pages you totally get drawn into the world of the loup-garou, and their concerns and struggles and relationships. Plus, I defy you not to fall in love with Vivan. She is awesome ... and in my head looked like Blake Lively )

Movies

.45

Description: After a drug-dealer (Angus Mcfadyen) abuses his girlfriend (Milla Jovovich) one too many times, she seduces her friends into killing him.

Mixed feelings about this one, there were some really good moments in it, and then some that were not so good - I'm over the camera as 'confessional' thing, and at times they movie tried too hard to be quirky and shocking which gave it an odd tone at times - but overall I think it's worth watching.

Milla Jovovich (who was looking absolutely stunning, better than she has since like 'Dazed and Confused') turned in an excellent performance. Milla Jovovich, I've always felt CAN act. I thought she was absolutely brilliant in "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" when she had some really meaty, really dramatic material to work with. Since then I've mostly seen her in action movies of varying quality, which she's usually good in even if the movies are shit, but she had a chance to show off her acting chops here and show them she did.

More on .45 )

Also, Milla Jovovich has love scenes with both the Aisha Tyler and Sarah Strange characters if you're at all interested.

If you're a Jovovich fan I'd saw this is definate must see, because she's radiant and acting her ass off, and in general I would saw that it's definately worth the watch.

Perfume

Good, very good movie. Unusual, but extremely capitivating. Ben Wishaw is exceptionally good as Jean Baptiste Grenault, a man born with an extraordinary sense of smell, who becomes obsessed with the idea of learning how to capture the small of people so that it can preserved for all to enjoy. I won't say much more because it is a very visual, and emtional movie and honestly I can't really think of how to descripe why I like it so much without taking away from the magic of it.

Prey - a.k.a. Bridget Moynahan fights lions while Robocop worries.

Description: An American family on holiday in Africa becomes lost in a game reserve and stalked by lions.

Um, there's really no reason to see this movie unless you really want to see Bridget Moynahan in a tank top kind sorta not really fighting a lion. Most of the movie takes place in the back of a jeep (no not like that!) which Bridget having to babysit the world's sleepiest boy and the world's most annoying angry!teenage girl while being sweaty in a tank top. Also, she's married to Robocop.

Not good. Only see it if staring at Bridget Moynahan for an hour and a half can keep you entertained no matter what she's doing, or if being irritated is fun for you.

[livejournal.com profile] trancer21, you could have a lot of fun mocking this one. It's really one of those movies where you're like "so much ammo, so little time".
