This picture is almost enough to make me cry about the fact that the series will never be made into a movie and/or television show because I'll never get to see Maggie Q play Ivy (or as I like to think of this perfect blend of hotness ... Ivy Q).
Fucking Flawless.

Date: 2011-03-31 02:07 am (UTC)I mean, Ivy was saying goodbye, but by the end those circumstances had been pretty much undone, kind of reaffirming my conclusion that Harrison is just fucking with us till the end. Wherein there's still a possibility it might happen.

Date: 2011-03-31 02:21 am (UTC)I'm such a hater at this point that I can't find it within myself to get excited/hopeful about it. I haven't even read the scene. Last book I at least read the scenes that people said were decent, but I can't even bring myself to do that with Pale Demon (even though I'm hearing its much better than the last few books). I honestly fear my [Mary J. Blige]hateration[/MJB] might be too far along to ever really forgive K.H. for what she's done to the series.
Like you I get the impression that Harrison is just fucking with us till the end. I feel like I've been doing this ...
for 8 books, but unlike you at this point I have almost no hope that Rachel and Ivy's HEA's will involve them getting together as a couple. I get the impression that at the end of the last book, Ravy fans will feel like Burt.

Date: 2011-03-31 02:28 am (UTC)I guess what I'm saying is that for the first time in a couple of books, I actually saw a possibility of where she could be going if she doesn't chicken out again some more.
Re: Warning: hatin' abounds in this comment
Date: 2011-03-31 02:43 am (UTC)I think I need to wait to see what people's thoughts on the next book are before I will be able to read this one. I'm like a spurned lover right now, who can't hear my douche-bag ex's name without wanting to throw things before I break down in tears. It's too fresh.
I tried to start reading Pale Demon, and intellectually I could tell it was alright, but it was like my brain was trying to protect my fragile heart by remaining aloof from the text, and I found that I couldn't get into it.

It is encouraging to hear that things are looking up again.
How much Ivy was there in this book?
I've got the idea in my head that Kim is not nearly as interested in Ivy as a character as she was at the beginning of the series, and this makes me worry that if Kim's girl!crush on Ivy has worn off that bodes poorly for a Ravy ending.

Date: 2011-03-31 02:51 am (UTC)I'll say upfront that there was A LOT of Trent in this book. But. He was bearable for me because he was achieving and surpassing levels of stupid previously reserved only for Rachel. It was almost to the point where I was getting pissed 'cause "Trent is not this dumb!" And I don't even like Trent. But I like character assassination less, you know?
There was a decent bit of Ivy, not as Ivy-centric as some have been. But she does get to be snarky and awesome and herself a little more. She was reaching for independence, that awesome, broken woman. There was no Glenn mention though. I was a little curious about that and where that was going. I think she actually made awesome use of Ivy when she was in scenes compared to some other recent books where all Ivy does is stand there and look pretty, you know? Ivy is awesomer than that and she got to kick ass this book too.
Re: Warning: hatin' abounds in this comment
Date: 2011-03-31 03:12 am (UTC)This is very true. There was a lot of frustration from the het fans after Pale Demon. The Ravy fans finally had others to join in with the bitching about being jerked around. By trying to appeal to everyone and appease everyone she's made NO ONE happy.
I tried to read the first few chapters of Pale Demon and I realized that it was going to be endless Trent. I've liked Trent in small doses (well, liked to hate on him), but I was kind of overwhelmed by the amount of Trent.
And I don't even like Trent. But I like character assassination less, you know?
*thinks about Skimmer ... nods* Yeah, I know.

Good to know. From what I read Ivy seemed to be in fine form, but I wasn't in the mindset to appreciate it. I honestly think I need to leave it for a while and read the book once I can think about the series without immediately getting irritated (if that day happens, which I honestly hope it will). Knowing that Ivy gets to kick ass, and be independent and awesome will help speed up the process hopefully.

Date: 2011-03-31 06:17 pm (UTC)Nicely done.
I get your wariness, though, and since you're the one who turned me back to Hollows with your awesome fic (after I'd given it up before for being too like Anita Blake and Southern Vamp, without anything to redeem or separate it), I'll probably wait till the end and then see if I can go back.

That's the point I'm at now too. The thought of reading one of the books right now makes me nauseous. I tried to read the start of Pale Demon and couldn't do it. You were right to be weary, I'm sorry I dragged you back into the web of despair that the Hollows became.

Date: 2011-03-31 09:31 pm (UTC)And you are wise to stay away from the Hollows. It will lure you in at first, charm you, wine and dine you, whisper sweet nothings in your ear, and then it will sleep with your best friend, max out your credit card and leave you wondering what the hell was wrong with you that you ever feel for its bullshit.
Yeah, I know ... haters stay pressed ;)

Date: 2011-03-31 11:00 pm (UTC)On the better side, there are two series that was recommended through your LJ that I do adore. In an honourable second place is Legend of the Seeker. While first place goes to the awesomeness that is the cartoon series Avatar.
Speaking of Avatar, I have a better idea how terrible is the M Night Shyamalan garbage. No I didn't watch it, but I did recently saw a new 25 min review of it with footage from the film. Which I think is the only possible way to actually sit through the film.
Both the actors and characters are terrible, but I would be lying if I said I didn't find some of it unintentionally funny. Then again it might have been the review. For example the element bending. It was so terrible. In the cartoons the elements actually correspond to the character's movements. In the movie, it looked like the characters had to do bad interpretative dance to activate the elements, then what happened after that would be random.
The movie made element bending look comical. I laugh every time I see that scene of the earth bender fight where one moment one guy could put up a rock wall with a single movement, then the next it takes six earth benders doing an over the top dance to move a tiny rock. It was even funnier when the review played that scene to the Jimi Hendrix song "Along the Watchtower".

Date: 2011-04-01 07:50 am (UTC)Also, I got the impression that this was pretty much it Ravy, and it will be cock-blocking all the way. Plus, I think I read in some forum that Ivy was going to hook up with the chick from one of the short stories (I need to get my hands on those). If so, I'm all for it. Ivy deserves happiness, and Rachel is too fucking nuts for her.

Which I thought was just an A+ comment. No one can resist Maggie's hotness.
Also the idea of Maggie as Ivy...awesome.
Sadly, the idea of Ivy Q is the only thing that I now find awesome about the Hollows.

TBH the series sucking made me turn away. You are in the Golden Days of the series when everything was awesome and exciting and amazing and made you want to read more and more. Books 1-5 are wicked, and I devoured them. Things start to go downhill with Book 6 and books 7 and 8 were pretty dire. Apparently the new books is good again, but books 7 & 8 enraged me/disappointed me so much that I haven't been able to read the rest of book 8 or book 9
My advice read up to book 5, then just wait and see so that if the series continues to be a hot, disappointing mess you can remember it for how it was. At this point I almost can't remember thinking about the series and genuinely being excited about it.

Date: 2011-03-31 03:00 am (UTC)Nikita really is just Ivy without fangs. And Alex is like the character Rachel Morgan THINKS she is. Which is to say smart, capable, heroic, talented and loyal.
It's like The Hollows is a badly-written vampire AU of Nikita that somehow got sent back in time...
*sigh* It really is like a badly written AU, which makes me so sad because I remember when it was entertaining and movingly written.
Oh well, the Hollows sucks now but it's almost time for new Nikita!

the photo goes bigger if you click on it. I think the fandom just about combusted on Monday morning when Lyndsy tweeted this. The smiles on both of them (esp Lynd's giant grin), eee!

Date: 2011-03-31 09:00 pm (UTC)I also love that they have sweet hangouts and like watch Valley of the Dolls together and stuff.
Even though it has no bearing on what's on-screen really, I love that this cast loves each other so much. It's very cute.

Date: 2011-03-31 10:44 pm (UTC)Did they actually watch Valley of the Dolls together? I must have been the only person to read that tweet as Lyndsy watched it and then had to get up early to work with Maggie on set. Clearly my interpretation is not the better one.
This cast does seem to adore each other, it's all very adorable.

Date: 2011-03-31 03:09 pm (UTC)Like, ever since you suggested Maggie Q as Ivy I can't see *anyone* else in the role. And then I think about Bridget Regan as Rachel.. hopefully rewritten enough so she's not so dumb and it's like I've found my Hollows Happy Place!

Date: 2011-03-31 03:32 pm (UTC)Despite how much I've come to hate the books, I'd be really happy about a tv show being made, because I think that in the right hands the show could fix/avoid what I've come to hate about the books.
Kind of like how I hate Terry Goodkinds "Sword of Truth" books, but I LOVED Legend of the Seeker. I think that a Hollows show could cut out the stupid bits of the books and expand on the awesome parts of it. Plus, they couldn't possibly make Rachel stupider or more annoying so there's only one direction to go, up.
Bridget Regan is my head!Rachel, and she'd be great on a TV show version because she's so incredibly likable and sympathetic. I feel like she could make my feel for Rachel and her stupid plights in a way Harrison hasn't been able to make me for a LONG time.
The only downside would be that Maggie Q wouldn't be able to play Ivy because of Nikita (which I would find a way to deal with because I love Nikita). I wouldn't even mind Ivy Q looking like a midget next to Bridget Regan's Rachel.
*sigh* Why is it that everything that excites me about the Hollows-verse (a TV show, Ravy) will never happen?

Date: 2011-03-31 07:33 pm (UTC)Sorry, my IQ fell in the single digits for a second there due to the pretty. Oh yeah, this is my mental Ivy down to a T... or a Q in that case. It almost makes me wish I had time to drag through the rest of PD right now...
So pretty... But the one with the bat is weird. She looks like some murderous doll or something, like the gorgeous love child of Barbie and Chucky. Is that just me?

I look forward to your review once you manage to finish it. I'm still at the point where just the idea of reading it exhausts me.
She looks like some murderous doll or something, like the gorgeous love child of Barbie and Chucky.
It's definitely a strangely arousing picture. I'd like to think of it as a shoutout to the Nikita episode "Echoes" where Nikita used a bat to subdue Nathan.
